Chapter 39: Chapter 39

Alex

It didn’t take long before Theadora finally got ready. This time, she wore a black wig with soft bangs that framed her face perfectly, the long strands at the back gathered into two low buns on both sides of her head, making her look childlike and deceptively sweet.

Her hazel contact lenses caught the light just right, softening her gaze with a warm, almost angelic glow that didn’t quite match the playful mischief lurking behind it. The ivory sundress she wore clung gently to her waist before flaring out into a short, flowy skirt that brushed her thighs with every step. Scattered with tiny pastel flowers, it looked innocent enough at first glance—but paired with the length and the way it moved when she walked, it was anything but that.

Her makeup wasn’t as bold as earlier but it was just enough to catch people’s attention. She truly looked like something out of a storybook...that is if that storybook had a hidden dark Chapter waiting to be read.

And though I’d never admit it, I was secretly glad I wasn’t the one on the receiving end of our schemes.

"Is this innocent and clueless enough for you?" She asked with a smug look as she walked into the living room.

I tore my gaze away from her, deliberately ignoring her question. "Get her to the car."

Adrian, who had been lounging on the armrest of the couch with a half eaten apple in his hand and his phone in the other, raised a confused brow at me but after a few seconds pushed off with a sigh and moved towards her.

Theadora didn’t budge.

Instead, she folded her arms, tilting her head slightly to the side like she was waiting for something. "So that’s it? No sarcastic comment? No insult? Not even a half-hearted grunt?"

I clenched my jaw, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a reaction. She had already wasted my time and gotten me to take back what I said today. What more could she want from me?

If I knew that she was going to cause this much problems I would have just hired someone to do this then get rid of them afterwards.

I slowly reached for my face, resting my fingers on my nose bridge. Why the hell didn’t I think of that earlier?

"I know you want to say something," she continued, taking slow steps toward me, "...so say it."

"Can we please not do this now?" I pushed myself off the couch before reaching for the keys on one of the side stools. "You’ve already spent about two hours getting ready and we’re running out of time now. Are you aware that you’re supposed to be in school right now?"

"Of course I’m aware." She rolled her eyes. "In fact I would even be in class right now if someone didn’t threaten me to help him." She said with air quotes.

"I didn’t threaten you..."

"Uh..." Adrian interrupted as he chewed on his apple. "...so am I still taking her to the car or are you two about to start another argument?"

"No..." I said, though it sounded more like I was trying to convince myself than answer Adrian. "We’re not arguing. Take her to the car. I’ll lock up."

"Okay if you say so." He smirked as he backed off.

Ignore him. Just ignore him.

I kept reminding myself.

When Adrian had successfully taken a reluctant Theadora to the car, I let out a few curses before dragging a hand through my hair.

"God give me strength."

Who knew handling an 18 year old could be this demanding.

After locking up, I quickly joined them in the car and since Adrian still had a few things to explain to Theadora, I had to be the one driving today.

Which meant I had to listen to those two yapping the whole drive to Simon’s office. Maybe I should have just made Adrian fill her in before we got into the car.

That would’ve been a hell of a lot better.

"Okay...that doesn’t sound too hard." Theadora said after Adrian had gone over everything again. "But you haven’t told me how I’m going to get in."

"Adrian booked you a meeting with him." I cut into their conversation as I pulled over. "You don’t need to worry about anything else. Just go in there and act normal and...do what you gotta do." I cleared my throat before glancing at the rear view mirror only to find her staring at me.

"You’re saying it like it’s going to be easy." She scoffed.

Not this again.

"It is easy. Adrian and I made sure of that."

"I’m simply helping you guys to do something that was too difficult for you both to do yourselves. Why can’t you just acknowledge that you can’t do this without me? Adrian has."

"See that’s where you’re wrong." I took off my seatbelt. This has definitely been one of my worst decisions in life.

"Uh excuse me?"

"We’re here now so could you two just stop arguing for a few hours so we can get this done." Adrian sighed from behind me. "Why do you guys even argue so much about the most ridiculous things?"

Goddamn it.

Adrian was right. Normally, I don’t even talk this much and now I’m arguing with a freaking teenager. Anytime she’s around she just finds a way to piss me off.

"Let’s go."

Theadora huffed dramatically as she stepped out of the car, crossing her arms with the flair of someone who believed she could have anything in the world. Adrian rolled his eyes behind her, clearly used to her antics by now.

"I’m just saying," she muttered under her breath as they walked toward the building, side by side, "a little appreciation wouldn’t kill him."

"Maybe not," Adrian replied with a teasing grin, "but your attitude definitely will."

She swatted his arm lightly, and I tuned them out before my patience could flatline.

Minutes later we were walking on the highest floor of the building, the blast of cool air from the conditioners brushing against our skin.

My eyes darted around, taking in the glass panels, front desk and polished black doors before irritation crept in, settling in my chest.

To think the cause of all my problems was sitting behind a desk in that damn office probably sipping his third cup of coffee today.

He’s damn lucky, I can’t kill him. The bastard was smart enough to secure allies in high places. Killing him would set off a chain reaction I definitely can’t afford to deal with right now, which is why I was forced to do this in the much harder way.

The waiting room was quiet, save for the faint hum from a water dispenser in the corner and the soft shuffle of a woman’s heels behind the front desk.

Adrian and I settled into the seats in the reception while Theadora made her way to desk, but before she could say anything to the young girl there, a tall woman with short, copper-red hair and a black blouse tucked into grey pencil pants which I assumed to be Simon’s assistant, peeked her head out from behind the frosted glass door.

"Miss Maddie Crane?" she called out, using the fake name we gave her.

Theadora blinked, then her gaze darting to ours before slipping on her most pitiful expression as though vulnerability was just another card in her deck. "That’s me," she said sweetly, smoothing down her sundress as she walked forward.

Well...she better not ruin this for me.
