Chapter 40: Unforeseen Turn of Events

"I have no comment," Samantha answered firmly. "And anything you’ve heard so far is not officially confirmed by the Defense Force. Treat it as baseless rumor."

The reporters didn’t like it. More questions followed, louder than before.

"Are you covering up for him?"

"Is the Defense Force high-ranking official in cahoots with the corruption?"

She didn’t stay to listen, turning her back on them.

The flashes kept firing. Voices called out her name again and again, but she no longer reacted.

Making a statement now would only feed their narrative and give them more to twist.

With that out of the way, she got into one of the Defense Force Humvees and hitched a ride.

The city lights passed by in silence as the vehicle moved through the streets. No one spoke inside the cabin.

When it finally stopped, she stepped out and headed straight to her residence.

It was a 40-story building.

Even with her pay, she wouldn’t be able to afford luxury real estate like this. Other agents couldn’t help but wonder where her wealth came from.

"Good evening, Miss Samantha," the middle-aged receptionist greeted her. Unlike the others, he knew full well how she was able to afford this place.

"Your father came earlier to—"

"Please don’t. I’m not in the mood right now."

"Of course," he nodded.

The elevator itself had glass walls, offering a clear view of the city as it rose upward.

However, all those views didn’t matter to her right now. She was tired and mentally drained.

Worse, she had actually fallen for a man today—only for him to turn into a wanted criminal.

’I knew it. My love life is really cursed. No wonder I’m still single despite all my good points.’

She wasn’t saying it lightly. Most of the men she dated—or even considered dating—ended up caught in one misfortune after another.

Now, a small part of her felt guilty. What if she was the reason for all of this?

’No, that can’t be it,’ she shook off the silly idea. ’If the government is involved, it means he’s been on their radar for a long time.’

Without noticing, she reached her unit. Habit took over as the fingerprint scanner unlocked the door.

The space inside was too large for a single person. There was a long sofa facing a 100-inch TV on the side.

Behind was the kitchen, while the dining area was set near the large window.

She didn’t stay long and headed straight to her bedroom, which was equally impressive.

The bed alone was massive, wide enough for four people to lie down without crowding each other.

Beside it, the floor-to-ceiling window stretched across the wall. It gave a clear view of the city lights below, scattered and bright like a field of fireflies.

’I deserved a hot bath.’

She started unzipping her uniform slowly. The sound of the zipper cut through the quiet room as each layer came undone piece by piece.

The smooth fabric slipped off her shoulders, then her arms, revealing more of her light skin with every movement. She did not rush

Underneath, she wore simple undergarments. Even then, her curves stood out. Her body had a natural, model-like look. Slim but not fragile.

Her overall features were very pleasing to the eye, the kind that made men pause for a second without meaning to.

Click!

She pressed a remote.

A humming sound followed as the curtains slid shut across the floor-to-ceiling window. The bright city view slowly disappeared.

’I want to get to bed quickly.’ She stretched her body a little and reached for the last remaining fabric.

There was no reason to feel ashamed when she was the only person here.

When she was done, she headed toward the bathroom.

Warm light spilled out, mixing with the cool air of the previous room.

She stepped closer to the shower and placed her hand on the edge, then paused, like her mind was still half stuck on the thoughts from earlier.

A few seconds later, hot water began to fall, filling the room with a steady sound that slowly drowned out everything else.

’Tomorrow will be a hassle. I’m sure my superiors will interrogate me,’

She pushed the worry aside and entered the bathtub.

Eyes closed, she leaned her head back against the border and let the warm water sink into her skin. Slowly, her muscles loosened as the heat eased the tension from her body.

Outside her bathroom, faint movement began to stir, particularly near her discarded uniform.

Small eyes suddenly opened across the ball she pocketed, blinking one after another.

’I actually shut down... where am I?’

Francis only saw darkness. His awareness felt tight, boxed in. There was a strange pressure around him, like fabric wrapped over his entire body.

He tried to move.

Nothing responded the way it should.

[Host is still in severely weakened state]

The message flashed across his mind as a warning

He had already expected this outcome, but the backlash was worse than he imagined.

’At least I survived that monster.’

It was ironic coming from him, but it was the only word he could use to describe Lex’s overwhelming power.

Barely able to roll himself forward, he moved inch by inch, dragging through the darkness .

Then something came into view.

Clothes. A pile left on the side.

Right beside it was a white colored bra and panty. The scent was still fresh, like they had only been worn recently.

The sight caught him off guard, but not for any questionable reason. It only made him curious about how he ended up in a place like this.

He looked around as much as his limited movement allowed. The room already told enough.

Clean design. High-end materials. Everything placed with care, like nothing here was left to chance.

Whoever owned this place obviously has money to spare.

[DING!]

[You have been outside an organic lifeform for far too long. Please find a new body or you will die in 5 minutes.]

The warning was serious. He looked around again, but the place was too clean. Even rats would have trouble living here.

’I need to find a body fast.’

He forced himself forward, but his movement was so slow it was pointless. At this rate, the five minutes would be gone before he even reached the exit.

Just as he was running out of options, the bathroom door clicked open.

A beautiful woman stepped out with a white towel wrapped around her body, revealing her soft-looking legs.

Others would be turned on seeing such a tempting sight, but all he cared about was survival.

Of course, doubt was still there. His category level was not high enough to take over a body that large, and he never tried infecting an intelligent being before.

Worst case, her body would reject him completely, leaving him more vulnerable.

Either way, the alternative was to die without trying.

’I can’t die. No matter what. I can’t fail my daughters again.’

His love and obsession for his daughter’s revival overpowered everything else. He pretended to be dead and stayed as still as possible.

"What is this thing doing here? Did it roll out of my uniform?" Samantha mumbled, picking him up.

The cold air from the AC helped hide his heat signature, and she was too drowsy to notice it.

"I’m so exhausted," a yawn slipped out, so she placed him on the desk beside her bed like it was nothing important.

Then she dropped onto her mattress without bothering to change into her pajamas.

Gently, she curled up under the blanket and let her eyes slowly close, unaware of the danger she was in.
