Void Cultivation-Chapter 274
From her knowing smile, Grey knew that the captain must have prepared for a situation like this. After all, for her to mutilate her own body and be so ruthless toward herself, she must have a way to recover.
Hence, he did not ask any further questions. The stench of blood began to permeate the area as the winds blew fiercely, carrying the metallic scent through the air.
With the captain’s heart in Grey’s hand, she began to mutter an incantation in a low voice.
At first, her voice was soft and gentle, like a faint whisper drifting through the wind. But very soon, it grew louder and became filled with an unknown, ancient meaning. Even though the captain was only a reflection within the eyeball, her voice sounded as though it was right beside them, echoing clearly in their ears.
What happened next was shocking.
The captain’s mutilated corpse began to mutter as well, its voice low and hoarse.
Slowly, Grey watched as its single eye rolled back into its socket, revealing only the pale white beneath. Its mouth twitched before opening slightly, producing a muffled, distorted tone. The moment both voices overlapped and spoke in unison, the entire world began to tremble violently.
The fierce winds abruptly stopped, and the hurriedly moving clouds froze in place, as if time itself had been interrupted. Then, before their eyes, the captain’s corpse began to shake and convulse intensely.
A strange black liquid started to seep out from its pores. The substance was thick and viscous, like black tar or darkened blood. The moment it appeared, the trembling of the world became even more intense, as though something beyond this realm had taken notice.
Right after that, the captain’s corpse suddenly caught on fire.
The flames were black and filled with endless malice. They did not emit warmth; instead, they gave off a chilling, oppressive aura. Grey could even hear the sounds of countless ghosts moaning and shouting with twisted glee as the fire engulfed and devoured the captain’s corpse.
Yet despite all this, both the corpse and the captain’s reflection maintained the chant without interruption, their voices steady and unwavering.
After the span of twelve slow breaths, the black goo stopped seeping out from her body. It gathered together in midair, condensed, and gradually turned into the shape of a doorknob engraved with faint, unfamiliar patterns.
By this time, the black fire had already engulfed and burned away a large portion of the captain’s flesh, leaving behind only charred bones and patches of burnt tissue.
When Grey and Roxanne saw this, they both stepped backward slightly. Grey’s face held a faint frown, while Roxanne’s expression turned pensive and tense.
From what the captain was doing, Grey could faintly discern that she was attempting to conduct a ritual directed toward a particular existence.
When that thought surfaced in his mind, he remembered the existence behind the small door, and his frown deepened.
Is she trying... to summon a god? Grey thought inwardly.
Roxanne also seemed to understand what the captain was attempting. Her face was filled with horror and shock, her pupils slightly trembling.
However, after the black goo had fully coagulated, it transformed once more, this time into the image of a woman with a fish tail instead of legs, holding a scepter in her hand. The figure appeared solemn and dignified, yet carried an indescribable pressure.
At that exact moment, the captain’s corpse was completely burned into ashes.
The instant her corpse finished burning into nothingness, it signified that the ritual to contact the god had failed.
The reflection of the captain within the eyeball seemed to have expected this outcome and did not say anything. She merely let out a small, quiet sigh after finishing the final syllable of the incantation.
"Little Grey, do you remember the Mosasaur that nearly killed you in the Dead Sea?" the captain suddenly asked.
Grey was taken aback by her abrupt question, but he still answered.
"I remember."
"That Mosasaur from that day was very special," the captain continued. "A divine entity, one very close to the level of a god, had bestowed it with luck and blessings. Moreover... this world itself accepted the Mosasaur’s existence."
A soft sigh echoed within Grey’s mind. It was the captain’s voice.
"If my judgment is correct, then the Mosasaur should still be within your Sea of Consciousness. Its spirituality should not have completely dissipated yet. If you can, please try to summon it out. I want to use it... to lure out that divine entity."
When Grey heard her words, he was not overly shocked. He had long known that the Mosasaur was a special case. Even during their battle that day, he could sense that it was different from ordinary creatures.
The captain has truly set her mind on the object she came here for. I’m sure the eyes of the Soul Ascendancy realm expert were not her true goal. She only used them to entice me... Grey sighed inwardly.
Everything the captain had done up until now carried a deeper meaning. Although most of it was still unclear, Grey could vaguely see the direction in which things were heading. He could also perceive the immense effort she had invested into this plan.
For her to sacrifice her own body without hesitation... it was a testament to her determination.
In the end, I cannot compare to the captain. She has planned this from the very beginning...
With that thought, Grey’s consciousness dove into his Sea of Consciousness.
The world around him was suddenly enveloped in darkness. When his vision cleared, he appeared as a spirit soul hovering above his endless sea of consciousness.
Above him hung a bright purple moon, illuminating the entire sky with a faint yet steady radiance. Below, its light reflected upon the surface of the vast sea, tinting the waves in a deep shade of violet.
Grey did not need to search for the Mosasaur. The moment it had entered his Sea of Consciousness, he had already sensed its location.
Thus, his spirit soul rapidly moved across the sea. When he reappeared, he was hovering above a particular region of the vast sea of spirit energy, where a faint and familiar presence lingered beneath the surface.
Deep below, the Mosasaur was sleeping, its back flippers swaying slightly in the dark waters of the Sea of Consciousness. As if sensing his gaze, it suddenly woke up and opened its eyes to stare directly at Grey.
Inside its eyes, Grey could see only blankness and listlessness. The Mosasaur had no soul.
The purple aura of the Life Demon Art was meant to refine the life and soul of every creature it came into contact with.
But even though the Mosasaur lacked its own consciousness, it still retained some of its primal instincts.
At this moment, it could faintly sense that the person staring at it was its master. After being refined by Grey, the Mosasaur had all its memories and aggressive thoughts wiped away completely.
The only thing it remembered was its master’s aura, that familiar presence etched into its very being.
---
A few moments later, after Grey had closed his eyes, he suddenly opened them again.
Within his pupils, one could faintly see the image of sharp, overlapping jaws.
A loud roar reverberated from Grey’s body as a Mosasaur more than ten meters in length suddenly appeared behind him.
Its eyes shone with a faint blue light as it let out a shocking roar toward the heavens. The sound was deep and ancient, causing the air itself to tremble.
Secretly, the captain heaved a sigh of relief.
She continued to mutter the incantation even after her physical body had turned into ashes. Very soon, the black image of the woman with a fish tail began to shake and tremble violently.
The skies roared, and it seemed as if the heavens themselves were about to split open. At the same time, the captain’s soft voice could be heard murmuring the incantation, while the Mosasaur roared loudly into the sky.
Together, their sounds stimulated the black image of the woman.
A short moment later, accompanied by the continuous roars of the Mosasaur and the steady murmurings of the captain, the black image of the woman with the fish tail slowly began to come to life.
The black goo began to condense further and refine itself into a clearer form. ’Her’ black hair gradually turned deep blue, and so did ’her’ eyes. As ’her’ features became more defined and vivid, ’her’ body began to animate fully. However, in the place where ’her’ heart should have been, there was only an empty hole.
Very soon, the black woman opened ’her’ eyes and looked at them.
However, ’she’ frowned slightly.
The beating black heart in Grey’s hand suddenly flew out and entered the hollow space in the black woman’s chest. After it settled into the cavity, the black goo shifted and behaved like living flesh, sealing the hole completely.
The moment this happened, Grey felt as if he was being stared at by a true god.
His body began to shudder and collapse on its own. His flesh started to contort and break down at a visible speed, yet there was no expression of pain on his face. He could not even feel it happening.
However, his heart was shuddering intensely. Like everything in his body had been seen through completely.
Faint images began to appear around him, forming unstable projections. However, before even a quarter of them could fully materialize, they shattered and broke apart like fragile glass.
The woman’s expression did not change even once, but ’her’ gaze lingered on Grey for an extra second before ’she’ finally shifted ’her’ attention toward Roxanne.
Roxanne felt as though every secret she had ever possessed had been thoroughly exposed by this existence. At one point, she even forgot to breathe. Countless faint images appeared around her, depicting fragments of her entire life since birth.
However, these images were extremely faint and indistinct. They soon collapsed and dissipated on their own.
The moment they shattered, Roxanne trembled even more violently. Blood began to spill from her mouth and nose, staining her clothes.
Extreme horror was written all over her face. She wanted to run or escape, but she felt as though her body no longer belonged to her.
After gazing at the two of them, the woman finally shifted ’her’ eyes to the eyeball in Grey’s hand. The captain’s image trembled intensely, as if she were on the verge of being erased completely.
However, the woman soon withdrew her gaze and looked around her surroundings calmly. Throughout all this time, she did not even glance at the Mosasaur standing silently behind Grey.
Then ’she’ spoke a single sentence... one that caused Grey, Roxanne, and even the captain to shiver in fear.
"I see... this is interesting."
