Chapter 31 - 31 - Interval

"Ah, I see. That really adds up."

"Yeah. And that's it, I guess. All you gotta need to know."

That was my response to her "fascinatingly logical" chronological order, as she connected her thoughts to mine.

"But Kairi, I have so many questions for you."

"No need. This definitely ain't the right time. We need to save Hele—I mean, Professor Helena. Sorry, that was rude."

The source of this c𝓸ntent is frёeweɓηovel.coɱ.

"Wait, why not? The time stopped. Also, you really went all formal on me all of a sudden. Duh."

"And you suddenly went all casual, like some high school student."

"Okay, what's that supposed to mean? You mean teenagers?"

"Meh, never mind."

It felt kinda infuriating at this point—the way experience shaped your mind.

"Anyway, let's get to the point. If I'm here, doesn't that mean I failed to save her?"

She only nodded. Direct, no-nonsense, the kind of nod that made you feel like an idiot.

Nope, not that one. To be precise, a failure.

"I suppose the situation's a bit clearer now. Since we never really ran into Professor Helena in the present time, the time distortion might not even happen at this point."

Damn, now she really went into full scientist mode.

"Hm, I see. I keep wondering though, was there any rule to my ability?"

"Well, you kinda figured most of it out yourself. Actually, like, 90% of it."

Now that's interesting...

Return-By-Memory—the ability I named, a subversion of "Transcription."

So powerful it gave me brain damage and delusions for days.

"So, got any idea?"

"Okay, can you stop speaking like an average school teenager? It's seriously hurting my ears."

Seriously, please go back to that archaic, elegant Selene I used to know.

Hearing you talk like this is totally messing with the perfect "Selene" image I've got in my head.

And yeah, I really did it, even though she never, ever allowed me to.

"Perhaps, I'll try my best but these new words are gold. Also, you already knew that I would never allow you to do that, why would you keep going?"

To irritate you, what else?

"Because, Selene... listen to me just for once. These words are like viruses and they are cancerous. You know what I'm saying? Look, even I couldn't get out of these."

"I see. Alright, fair argument."

After such a banterous moment, there was a silence for a few seconds before I continued.

"Okay, let's get to the main topic. Do you have any strategy?"

"Strategy? What strategy?"

Okay, now I wonder why she starts to sound like a meme reference now...

"I mean, we need to save Professor Helena, right? Do you have any idea to do that? I'm struggling and almost dying for help here."

Apparently, there are several options to do so, but I need to make sure one that particularly would work out.

"Hm..." She propped her chin, seemed to think really hard.

"Nope, sorry. I got none."

Okay, wait. What do you mean you got none? Arrgggghhh.

"Fantastic. Genius."

"Thank you very much."

"It was a sarcasm."

"Okay."

I wondered whether she genuinely thought about the current situation or that she simply was playing around to toy with my feelings.

Either way, it's not funny.

I had to think about something else, as I propped my chin, tilting my head, while constraining my eyebrows.

Honestly, I found three ways to solve this out. But I had to ask her first.

"Okay, first of all... how does the interval disposition work?"

"It works by replenishing the time you have left into the current state of your own memory."

"Interesting." I muttered to myself, intrigued by this revelation.

"And what about Helena? Is she still alive? Also, is it possible to change the scene without harming the present time?"

"Well, suppose that you are present by the time before the scene, that would be more than plausible to do so."

More than plausible, huh.

I had to repeat her words as I genuinely wanted to find a clear solution. And on my own consideration, I had to eliminate one possible method.

"And what is it, Kairi?"

"Maybe stop prying into my privacy next time."

"Well, it cannot be closed either way."

"I know, just stop making it so obvious, will you? Those people will get confused."

"Those people?"

"Never mind. Sorry, that was something strange to ask for."

So, that one possible method was to warn Helena and told her the chronology. But perhaps, I had been missing one piece...

"Also, Selene... did you know the way I returned back to this timeline?"

"Hold on, you didn't remember?"

"No, apparently my consciousness got cloned..."

Wait, that's it.

"Cloned? What do you mean?"

"Alright, let me teach you something in-return."

She nodded, willing to listen whatever conspiracy theory I had in-store after she did the exact same thing for several times.

"Okay so, let's hypothetically say that my current consciousness, which is "me", doesn't have any apparent connection with others in a different timeline. How do you think they are connected?"

She thought about it for a while, then revelation seemed to approach her.

Eyes dilated, with her head aback.

"So, are you suggesting that your consciousness is, has been, and will be duplicated whenever you enter the new timeline?"

"Exactly. So, the explanation that my consciousness only gets transferred without any physical or mental copy never makes sense for me."

"Actually, you were onto something here. But your ability doesn't allow you to do that."

"What do you mean?"

"Suppose that it really gets duplicated, how would you be able to remember then?"

Now, that's the tricky question.

"Hm, what if my memory doesn't get duplicated nor transferred, but something between both?"

"Hm, as in it gets echoed or relayed throughout a certain media."

"No, neither of them. There is a certain theory that may explain this phenomenon."

"And what is it exactly?"

"Quantum entanglement."

My mind might not be the brightest when it comes to theori, but at least I understood about this one from watching quantum physics videos.

"What is it?"

"Well, you definitely aren't gonna get it. But let's see the layman terms..."

I honestly could hardly get to ground these terms without any help so...

Time to make use that brain of yours.

"So, how would you explain this, Selene my dear?"
