Chapter 402: Red sky

When we arrived at the Demon Valley, we could already hear the sounds of fighting coming from inside of the valley.

As we looked down from the cliff walls, we could also see that there were flashes of light that were coming from below. Though the majority of the valley was hidden by the top of trees, we weren’t able to see the exact circumstances inside of the valley.

I could also see that there were some people that were standing on the edges of the valley looking down just like us.

The one thing that I noticed was that this included the group that had been at the head of the pack.

These were the ones that had led the charge out of the city gates, the ones from the sects that those old men from the Central Sect Alliance came from. These were the ones that should have been inside of the valley leading everyone, but here they were watching it all happen.

They must have gone faster than the others and circled around once they lost those that followed them.

After guiding those people in, they stood above and watched it all happen just like the others that had traveled slowly.

It seemed like they were planning on using them to thin the herd just like the rest.

As expected of those from the large sects, they really were quite calculating.

That was why they had allowed smaller sects and the mercenary groups to participate in this Demon Slaying Conference in the first place.

The young man who had challenged me during the artifact gambling was actually a captain of a mercenary group. Based on the fact that he was the son of providence, he most likely would have become a legendary mercenary captain that fought against the sects that suppressed him if he had been allowed to develop.

But he was one of the examples of the mercenary groups that had been allowed to participate.

Otherwise, for this event that was being held by the Central Sect Alliance, the mercenary groups and the smaller sects wouldn’t have been allowed to participate.

It was only because they were being used as cannon fodder by the large sects of the Central Sect Alliance that they were allowed to participate.

But of course, it wasn’t as if the Central Sect Alliance was telling them to die.

They would be free to leave once they felt that they had defeated enough demons.

At the very least, they would be able to clear a path for those stronger sects to deal with the stronger demonic cultivators in the center of the valley.

For these defeated demons, they would receive rewards from the Central Sect Alliance, as well as receive the attention of the large sects if they performed well. So in most cases, they actually agreed to being used as cannon fodder by the large sects.

Though there were some that didn’t think about this at all.

There were some that just charged right into Demon Valley to fight the demons because they felt that they were doing it to be righteous.

After watching the battles down below for a bit, I suddenly turned and said, "I’ll be going down first. You all should watch what happens with the other groups and come down with them."

The senior brothers and sister were caught off guard hearing this and it seemed like they wanted to come along, but I stopped them with just a few words.

"I have something important to do, so I can’t come with you." I said in a calm voice that didn’t have any disdain in it.

But there were bitter smiles that appeared on the faces of the senior brothers and sisters.

They weren’t fools, they had already guessed that this was the case when I agreed to come with them. Otherwise with how I normally acted, I wouldn’t have agreed to come with them.

So they knew that it was only a matter of time before I would leave them to handle my own matter.

They just never thought that it would be so soon.

At the same time, they thought that they would have been able to help me a bit.

But since I was being straight with them, they didn’t hold me back any longer.

All of them nodded in agreement and took a step back as a symbol, as if they were separating from our group.

I looked at them one last time and said with a slight bow, "Good luck to all of you."

Then without waiting, I jumped down into the valley.

There were some people around us that were surprised to see us jumping in. Especially so since most of them recognized who I was.

There seemed to be some that wanted to jump down with me, but then they held themselves back.

Since they recognized me, they naturally knew who everyone thought I was.

So they recognized that even if they tried to follow me, they wouldn’t be able to do anything. Whether that was to help me or to take whatever I was planning on getting.

So in the end, everyone just watched as my group jumped down.

Naturally the girls and the lackeys all jumped down with me when I jumped down.

We floated down into the valley and saw the scenes of fighting in front of us.

...

"They’ve arrived, my lord."

"Very good, then let’s begin."

On the throne was a large demon who suddenly raised his hand.

When he raised his hand, there was a red energy that seemed to come out of his hand that flew up into the sky. After reaching the sky, it was as if it started dying the sky completely red.

But it wasn’t as if this bit of energy from the demon alone was enough to completely blot out the sky.

So there was a red energy beam that suddenly came from the altar that was behind the throne of the demon that also shot out into the sky.

This was what turned the sky completely red.
