Chapter 199: Chapter 199: A Family of Three

Vivian Quinn was stunned. She rushed to shield Elle, who had just been hit. "Shirley Wentworth, have you gone mad!"

When Nanny Jenner saw Shirley’s blow land on Vivian Quinn, she hurried over and pushed her away. "Miss Wentworth, watch yourself! Can you bear the consequences of striking our madam?"

Shirley Wentworth had lost control, retorting recklessly, "She asked for it! Who told her to be so nosy!"

Vivian Quinn ignored her, holding Elle and moving away from Shirley. She asked, "Elle, are you okay? Does it hurt?"

Elle fought back his tears. "Vivian, I’m not hurt."

Vivian’s heart ached for him. She hugged him tightly. "Don’t be afraid. I won’t let her hit you again."

"Vivian, I don’t want to leave you!"

"You won’t have to. If you don’t want to leave, no one can force you."

"Vivian Quinn, what nonsense are you spouting!" Shirley Wentworth pursued them relentlessly. "Jett already promised my aunt he’d give Elle back to me! What right do you have to say something like that to him? I’m taking him with me today, and not even God himself can stop me!"

Just as Vivian Quinn was about to speak, a low, cold voice suddenly sounded near her ear. "Is that so?"

Shirley Wentworth froze and turned to see Jett Sterling approaching in his wheelchair.

"Who gave you permission to strike someone in my house, hmm?"

"Jett..." Shirley Wentworth was full of grievances. "My son wasn’t listening. I had to discipline him."

"I won’t interfere with you disciplining your son, but you will not do it in my home." Jett Sterling’s expression was frigid. "And that’s to say nothing of you striking my wife."

"I didn’t hit her on purpose! She threw herself in the way, asking for it!"

Jett Sterling sneered. "Shirley Wentworth, the Wentworth Family isn’t known for producing shrews. You must be the first."

Shirley’s face paled and flushed, her expression twisting horribly.

She gritted her teeth. "Jett, if I’m a shrew, wasn’t it you who forced me to become one? If I hadn’t gotten pregnant with your child, if I hadn’t given birth to him, would I have all these problems today? After your one night of fun, you didn’t have to take any responsibility, but it’s different for me! Do you have any idea what I went through to give birth to him and how hard I worked to raise him?"

"You don’t need to guilt-trip me. That was your choice, and you naturally have to bear the consequences." Jett Sterling watched her, his face devoid of expression. "Since you’ve resorted to violence, you’re no longer fit to raise Elle. You won’t be taking him away today. If you want the child, call your aunt, the lawyer. I’d like to see how the law would award custody to a mother who abuses her son."

Shirley trembled with anger. "I only hit him because I lost my temper for a moment! By all rights, the child should be with me."

"You only want the child so you can use him to marry me, don’t you? I told you a long time ago, that’s impossible. If you let the boy go, it would be better for everyone. Name your price for any material compensation you want."

Shirley laughed out of sheer anger. "You want me to sell Elle to you? Jett, how much do you think Elle is worth?"

"Of course, he can’t be measured in money. But for you, if you miss this chance now, you’ll end up with nothing."

"Even if you offered me mountains of gold, I would never sell my child!" Shirley forced herself to calm down, then turned to Elle and apologized pitifully. "Elle, I’m sorry. Mommy was bad. Mommy lost control. Can you forgive Mommy, please?"

Elle hid in Vivian Quinn’s arms, refusing to even glance at her.

Vivian Quinn said, "Miss Wentworth, you seem emotionally unstable. Under these circumstances, you really aren’t fit to raise Elle. If you continue in this state, I suggest you see a psychiatrist."

"Vivian Quinn, are you saying I’m crazy?"

"Your erratic behavior today certainly makes you seem like it," Vivian Quinn replied bluntly.

"You..." Shirley was practically fuming, but with Jett Sterling present, she couldn’t lash out.

Jett Sterling cut straight to showing her the door. "Are you going to leave on your own, or should I have the Wentworth Family come and get you?"

Shirley bit her lower lip. "Jett, don’t do this to me. I’ll leave on my own."

"I won’t see you out."

Shirley turned and left. As soon as she got in her car, she quickly pulled out her phone to make a call. "Aunt, I couldn’t control myself. I hit Elle again, and now Jett won’t give him to me."

"What is wrong with you? Why did you hit the child again?" Ruby Wentworth said, displeased.

"I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I just can’t help it! The moment I think about how Elle is Jett’s son with some other woman, I just can’t stand it!"

"Shirley, you’re so much trouble," Ruby Wentworth said. "I can get the child back, but if you keep hitting him like this, you’ll just push him away. If he starts seeing Vivian Quinn as his mother, they’ll become a family of three, and you’ll truly be an outsider."

A wave of fear washed over Shirley. "Aunt, I was wrong. I’ll definitely control myself from now on."

"Let the child cool off at Sycamore Bay for a while. He likes Vincent, so I’ll have Vincent visit him more often and put in a good word for you."

"Thank you, Aunt," Shirley sobbed. "If it weren’t for you, I really don’t know what I would do."

"Don’t be too upset. Elle is still just a child, and he only follows his instincts. Who would have thought he’d grow so fond of Vivian Quinn?"

Shirley’s hands clenched into fists.

’That’s right, it’s all Vivian Quinn’s fault. If it weren’t for her, none of this would have happened, and Jett Sterling wouldn’t despise me!’

’Vivian Quinn must die!’

...

That afternoon, Easton Rivers arrived at Sycamore Bay.

"Madam, we haven’t traced the threatening incident at the rental apartment yet. It’s an old residential complex with incomplete surveillance coverage. As for the package, I’ve checked. The shipping label was likely stuck on directly. It didn’t go through the logistics system, so there’s no sender information."

Vivian Quinn frowned. "Then it’s highly likely that someone just stuck a shipping label on the box and left it at the door, making Joy think it was a package for her so she’d bring it inside."

"That seems to be the case."

"It looks like the culprit staked out the place beforehand, which is why they left no trace," Vivian Quinn said. "Since Joy is safe and already living here now, you can stop the investigation if you really can’t find anything. Whoever wants to harm me will show their face sooner or later. We just have to wait."

"I’ll keep investigating, but based on what we have so far, we might not find anything. That’s why I came to report to you today."

"Thank you for your hard work."

"Madam, who do you think it could be? After all, the number of people in Aethelgard who want to harm you is small enough to count on one hand."

Vivian Quinn thought about it seriously. "Rachel Quinn is already in prison. The Grant Family wouldn’t resort to petty tricks like threats. And Shirley Wentworth shouldn’t be that stupid, right? So I really can’t think of anyone."

"That’s true. It seems we can only do as you say, Madam, and wait."

"Yes. In any case, I’ll be careful. You don’t need to worry."

"Understood."

Jett Sterling’s acupuncture and medicinal baths were proving effective; he hadn’t had a relapse in over half a month.

Vivian Quinn adjusted his medication dosage and also began proactively treating Elle.

Elle was very cooperative. When it was time for his acupuncture, he would sit obediently, not moving a muscle.

"Vivian, after the needles, will Elle’s headaches go away?"

"They might. But it’s also possible that, like Daddy, you’ll get better slowly."

"Vivian is the best!"

"You little flatterer. It’s not too late to praise me after you’ve gotten better."

"No, girls need lots of compliments. And they need to be cherished."

Vivian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Where did you hear that from?"

"Nanny Jenner said it."

Vivian: "..."

"Madam." Nanny Jenner came in and reported, "There’s someone here to see you."
