Chapter 57: The neighbors

Jessica’s POV.

That evening, Maddie called my phone repeatedly. I wasn’t interested in speaking to her, even though I desperately wanted to know why Hilda treated her like that.

The door beeped, indicating that someone was entering the password. After a few beeps, the door chimed, and was pushed open. Liam entered and behind him was Kristen being helped in by his assistant.

"Wife," Kristen suddenly said, smiling as he slowly walked up to me.

Dazed, I stood there, watching the men entering the house. That was when my situation truly dawned on me.

Just as Kristen was about to hug me, Liam got in between us and hugged me instead.

"What are you doing? She’s my wife!" Kristen was angered, and Liam just stared at him with a sneer.

Kristen turned to me, about to speak. Assuming he was about to ask what relationship I had with Liam, I turned around and walked away, saying, "I made dinner. Let’s eat."

The two joined me after a few minutes had gone by. Kristen’s assistant had left after bringing in his boss’s things.

As we ate, my phone rang a couple of times, drawing the two men’s attention.

"Aren’t you going to answer that?"

"Who is calling?"

Both Liam and Kristen asked simultaneously. I waved my hand, "It’s not important."

Liam didn’t push it, but Kristen felt unhappy. However, I ignored him and focused on eating.

Suddenly, he put down his cutlery, drawing my attention. "You don’t like it?"

He shook his head lightly, "It’s delicious, but I can’t feed myself."

Liam’s face changed, as if he’d chewed on a fly. But when he caught my warning glare, he swallowed his dissatisfaction and offered to feed Kristen, but Kristen furrowed his brows in disgust.

"Are you gay? I have a wife to feed me."

I took a deep breath and left my seat, and pulled his place over, but Liam held my hand tightly under the table. I could tell he didn’t want me to feed another man, but I ignored him.

Kristen smiled happily as he prepared himself to be fed. And for some reason, this side of him also made me smile.

As a patient, he was supposed to drink soup. Carefully scooping the soup and blowing on it before feeding him, felt like I was feeding a child. The only difference was that he was a grown man, and it felt very awkward.

Just then, I heard a knock on the door. Liam left to open the door, and for a fleeting moment, I thought I saw a look of annoyance on Kristen’s face. But it was too quick for me to decipher if it truly was.

Liam soon returned to the dining area with three other ladies. My brows furrowed. Who are these ladies?

"Jessica, meet Doctor Livia, a veteran neurosurgeon, known for her magic hands. She’ll be living with us to look after Kristen."

Stunned, I looked from Liam to Livia, and then Kristen. His face was contorted with dissatisfaction and my eyes narrowed. Doesn’t he want to get well?

As if he sensed my gaze, he turned and held my hands, pouting, "Who are they, wife? Are they here to hurt me?"

Before I could speak, one of the ladies ran forward and gasped, "Kristen? What are you talking about? I’m your wife, and she’s Liam’s wife!"

My jaw dropped, so did Kristen’s. I blinked, staring at Liam, whose face was devoid of emotions, as he added. "This is Matinda, she’s Kristen’s sister."

I swallowed, finally understanding what Liam was doing. He brought a neurosurgeon in case Kristen had another episode. As for the alleged wife and sister, Kristen doesn’t have any, so it could only mean that Liam was messing with him.

Honestly, I didn’t hate it, but I felt it wasn’t the right way to get Kristen to heal.

"Doctor Livia will live with us. I already prepared a lab for her. If Kristen ever has a reason to be treated, she’ll immediately swipe in. Your wife and sister will take proper care of you..." he paused for a moment, before he continued, "And also, take a proper look at my wife and yours so you’d know the difference between them." With that, Liam pulled me off my seat and dragged me away.

I glanced back as Liam led me away, and saw Kristen staring at us. There’s this look in his eyes that made me uncomfortable for some reason, even though he wasn’t looking maliciously at us.

Inside one of the rooms, Liam pulled in and shut the door behind us. He gave me his back, as he tugged angrily at his tie.

I stood there, unsure of what to do. Not really, I felt I should hug him from behind, but at the same time, I didn’t want to. So I stood there, unmoving.

He suddenly turned, frustration rolling off his body. "Jessica, Kristen is not in an accident. He’s faking it."

I stared at him weirdly. What sense was he making? Why would Kristen fake such a thing? What does he intend to achieve by that?

He seemed to understand that I didn’t believe his absurd accusation. So, he took a deep breath and tried to calm down, "Don’t walk around the house wearing revealing clothes, like your nightdress henceforth. We have a man in the house."

I just stared at him and said nothing. My phone rang again. This time, I didn’t want to answer it, but he snatched it from me and answered it, then left it on speaker.

I was about to chide him when I heard Maddie’s haggard and panicking voice.

"J– Jessica...please save mom."

And the call ended.

Stunned and speechless, I stood there until Liam shook my shoulders.

"What’s going on?"

I shook my head, I had no idea.

He grabbed his phone from his suit and dialed a number and dishes out orders to look into what happened to my adopted family.

Sitting on the bed, my brows furrowed deeply. Maddie’s voice sounded again and again in my ears. She sounded like someone undergoing torture.

It wasn’t Hilda, was it?

My eyes snapped and I immediately called Hilda but she wouldn’t answer her phone.

"Liam, take me to Hilda’s place."
