Chapter 64: Kristen’s Desire

The night stretched into a comfortable silence, still Liam hadn’t returned from the office. I’d called him a couple of times but he wouldn’t take his call either.

Pacing my room and biting my nails with the phone to my ears, my mind ran wild with thoughts, conjuring scenarios why I couldn’t reach him.

Was it Zoey again? I shook my head, it wouldn’t be. Although he didn’t tell me details about what transpired between him and Zoey, I wanted to trust him, and believe in him this time.

Was it work? For some reason, I didn’t feel that it was either. I stared at his number after the call didn’t connect and sighed. Liam had to return home. I couldn’t see myself spending the night under the same room as Kristen. That guy gave me the creeps. Especially after he demanded such a bizarre thing from me earlier.

I didn’t know if my brother would believe me if I showed him Kristen’s true face. I feared that our two years relationship couldn’t beat the friendship he had with Kristen for over ten years. The last thing I wanted was to be seen as a pretentious and unlikable person by my new family.

Especially when I had just started to feel like I was fitting in. I sighed again, feeling a wave of frustration wash over me. Why wasn’t Liam answering his phone? I needed him to come home, not just because of Kristen’s creepy behavior, but because I felt safe with Liam.

I felt like I could trust him, and that he would protect me from anything that might harm me. I glanced at the clock on my nightstand, it was past 1 AM, my anxiety growing with each passing minute. Where was Liam? And when was he coming home?

Just as I was starting to feel like I was going to lose my mind with worry, I heard the sound of the front door opening. My heart skipped a beat as I quickly made my way to the living room. Seeing who it was, it felt like a heavy load was lifted off my chest.

Liam walked in, looking exhausted and pale. As he caught my eyes, he smiled. "Hey, sorry I’m late," he said, dropping his keys on the counter. "I got held up at the office."

I walked towards him, my eyes scanning his face, taking in the dark circles under his eyes and the paleness of his skin. "Is everything okay?" I asked, my voice laced with concern. "You look like you’ve had a rough day."

Liam’s smile faltered for a moment, and he looked like he was about to say something, but then he seemed to change his mind. "I’m fine," he said, his voice a little too casual. "Just a long day at the office, and a little stressed, that’s all."

But I wasn’t convinced. Something was wrong with Liam. "This doesn’t look like a little, Liam. Are you sick?" I pressed my brows furrowing.

"Come on, Jessica, I know the way to the hospital if ever I’m sick," Liam chuckled. "How did your day go?"

I watched him closely, still concerned about his pale complexion, but he seemed determined to brush it off. I hesitated for a moment before deciding to let it go, for now. "It was uneventful," I said, walking back to the room as he followed behind me. "Except that I made Kristen tell the truth."

Liam’s footsteps stopped behind me, and I could sense his sudden interest. "He told you?" he asked, his voice low and curious.

I nodded, turning to face him. "He’s never sick," I said, my voice firm. "It was all a game."

Liam’s eyes narrowed, "he wouldn’t tell you the truth unless he had something else planned." His gaze suddenly shifted to me, eyes boring into me as if to read my very thoughts. "What exactly did he say to you, Jessica?" Liam asked, his voice low and intense, his eyes never leaving mine. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I met his gaze, sensing a deep concern and protectiveness emanating from him. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal, but something in Liam’s eyes told me I could trust him. Glancing at Kristen’s tightly shut door, I pulled Liam into our room and closed the door behind him, ensuring we were out of earshot.

Liam’s eyes never left mine, his gaze burning with a quiet intensity. "What did Kristen say to you?" he asked again, his voice low and urgent.

I took a deep breath, my heart racing slightly as I began to recount the conversation. "He told me that he’s been faking his illness," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "And then he asked me to...to marry him."

Liam’s eyes widened, his face darkening with anger. "He what?" he growled, his voice low and menacing. "You’re already married!"

"I know. I turned him down and asked him to pack out," I felt my own anger rising as I remembered the threat that bastard made; If I refused to marry him, he’d make my Silverwood family suffer.

And now, I couldn’t tell Liam about that part because he had no idea that I was the Silverwood family’s lost and found daughter.

I bit my lip, trying to hold back the emotions that threatened to spill over. Liam’s eyes narrowed, sensing that I was holding something back.

"What else did he say, Jessica?" he pressed, his voice firm but gentle.

I hesitated, unwilling to say more. If I told him about Kristen’s threat, I’d have to reveal my true identity, and I wasn’t ready for that. Not yet. So I shook my head, trying to brush it off. "Nothing, it’s just...he’s just really creepy, okay?"

Liam’s eyes lingered on mine, as if searching for the truth. But he didn’t push the issue further. Instead, he pulled me into a gentle hug. "I won’t let him hurt you, even as a ghost."

I stiffened, taken aback by his vow and the sudden hug. It’s been weeks we hugged, and I had almost forgotten the way Liam’s arms felt around me. The warmth of his body, the gentle pressure of his hands on my back. It was a sensation that was both familiar and foreign, and it sent a shiver down my spine.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should reciprocate, but then, I needed the hug. After all I’d been through, the silent wars I’d fought, the emotional and mental stress I’d endured for the past few weeks, I felt like I was crumbling, like the weight of everything was finally becoming too much to bear.

And Liam’s hug was like a lifeline, a reminder that I wasn’t alone, that someone cared. I wrapped my arms around him, holding on tightly as a wave of emotion washed over me. It was like a dam had burst, and all the feelings I’d been trying to keep locked away came flooding out.

I felt a sob rising up in my throat, and I bit my lip, trying to hold it back. But Liam just held me closer, his arms a safe haven. Although he’d hurt me too in the past, at this point in my life, he was my best option. He was the devil I knew and I chose him over the Angel I didn’t.

With my life riddled with so much betrayal and mysteries, I felt safer with Liam than anyone else.

As for Kristen and his threat, I didn’t take it too seriously. My Silverwood family wasn’t a helpless bunch. They were a powerful and influential family, with a long history of navigating the complex web of wealth and privilege. I had no doubt that they would be able to protect themselves. I’d just find a way to give my older brother a heads up.
