Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 196: My Son Has Become a Simp
On the other end of the phone, Esther heard Zion’s voice and quickly said, "I can, I can, I can hold on."
"Then be careful, we’re coming over now," Elara replied.
Esther somewhat uneasily reminded, "Oh, Elara, when you come over, keep your distance, or don’t get out of the car. Stay inside; you’re pregnant, and I’m afraid they might hurt you."
Elara agreed, "Okay."
After hanging up the phone, Zion asked, "How did Esther get entangled with Owen?"
He didn’t mean anything by this. He mainly remembered asking Miles to find a man with a blemished record to get engaged to Rosalind, intending to keep her preoccupied so she wouldn’t have time to bother Elara.
Miles found Owen, whom Zion hadn’t met but vaguely remembered as a good-for-nothing. Rosalind wouldn’t gain any advantage by marrying him.
So he felt, given Esther’s personality, she wouldn’t be interested in a man like that, and moreover, it sounds like... she’s acting as a mistress?
Elara wasn’t quite sure how those two got involved either; she could only pick and choose from what she knew.
Zion raised an eyebrow, noticing something amiss, "You said Owen is an actor?"
This seemed different from the Owen he knew.
Elara nodded, "According to Esther, he acts quite well; his family doesn’t support his acting, so he went out on his own... She probably doesn’t know Owen comes from such a big background."
Zion gave a meaningful response, "Hmm."
It seemed that the work done by his assistant was inadequate.
Unexpectedly, Owen ended up in Esther’s hands.
But it’s good, at least Owen didn’t end up marrying Rosalind, which would have been a real farce.
When they arrived at Esther’s doorstep, seeing Owen, Zion understood better — Owen was the man he had seen being intimate with Esther outside the mall before.
Everything clicked now, even for Elara’s sake, he had to help Esther out.
Inside Esther’s house.
Outside, Rosalind banged on the door, "Esther, if you have the guts to steal my man, don’t act like a coward! What, you’re a mistress now, and you’re afraid to face the consequences? Open the door, let’s confront each other face to face! Open up! I know you’re all inside! Open the door!"
Behind her, Kylie Dalton looked furious, whereas Mrs. Grayson seemed indifferent, without a hint of embarrassment.
Kylie couldn’t help but speak, "Mrs. Grayson, I know your Grayson Family is powerful and wealthy, and our Jacobs Family can’t compare. But it was your Grayson Family who contacted us for the engagement, and it was your Grayson Family who proposed breaking it off, without even providing a reason. Now I find out it’s because Owen’s child has a mistress and dumped Rosalind for her. In this matter, isn’t it your Grayson Family who wronged Rosalind?"
Mrs. Grayson looked at her indifferently, saying, "If you insist on saying it that way, there’s nothing I can do. However, I suggest you ask your son whether the Grayson Family provided compensation for breaking off the engagement. That compensation speaks to our attitude, and today’s drama is wholly unnecessary."
Kylie widened her eyes, angrily saying, "What do you mean by that? Do you think we’re putting on an act in front of you? While our Jacobs Family isn’t as wealthy as your Grayson Family, we wouldn’t do anything like that! We’ve come here looking for an explanation!"
"Owen has been cheating; while with my daughter, he’s finding other women. We’ve thoroughly investigated this! Now we’ve caught them, and they’re scared to even come out!"
Mrs. Grayson seemed calm and unhurriedly composed on the surface, but she was actually quite vexed. It was only when she arrived here today that she found out her foolish son had indeed been cheating while officially seeing Rosalind.
Even though he repeatedly claimed it was true love, being caught red-handed wouldn’t let the Jacobs Family easily let go.
She suddenly felt that locking themselves inside the room and refusing to open the door seemed quite wise.
Didn’t they notice that Rosalind brought several thugs along? If the door were opened, Owen wouldn’t dare act, and the girl inside would be in trouble.
Inside the room.
Esther glared at Owen and cursed, "What did I tell you back then? I asked you to cleanly break it off before coming to me! And now, this? I’ve never suffered such humiliation, damn it, all because of you!"
"How did you handle this? Huh? I’m asking you, wasn’t the engagement already canceled? Why is Rosalind at the door? Come clean — is it not completely over with them yet?!"
Owen squatted miserably, hugging his own shoulders, and timidly offered a small voice of explanation, "It’s not that, I’ve cleanly broken it off. My dad offered several big projects to appease the Jacobs Family. They accepted the benefits but don’t honor them, and now have the nerve to cause trouble. Why don’t we open the door, I’ll confront them. If they keep this up, those projects will be taken away from them."
Esther, hearing this, was enraged at the Jacobs Family for accepting benefits they still came to trouble, angry at Owen’s messiness dragging her into restless situations, and even angrier at herself for getting involved one night, which led to all this drama.
She carried an intimidating demeanor that terrified Owen. Though usually acting as a spoiled brat, it was the first time he had a girl he cared about act tougher than him. He had barely managed to win her over; he wouldn’t dare to act dominantly, utterly intimidated.
Seeing she hesitated to lay hands on him, he cautiously moved closer, comforting her back gently and proposing, "Why don’t we just head outside? My mom’s out there, too. With me and my mother, no one will dare bully you."
Esther chuckled coldly, "Idiot, didn’t you see the goons Rosalind brought? They wouldn’t dare hit you, but if I go out, they’d attack me without asking a word; do you believe that? With your puny skills, what help would you provide!"
Owen resentfully scratched his nose, losing his words.
After all, he was genuinely at fault; the night with Esther happened before officially breaking off with Rosalind. Strictly speaking, he did cheat... ⊙︿⊙
"So are we going to keep hiding in the room?" Owen sighed again, "We didn’t do anything wrong. No, you didn’t do anything wrong; it’s all my fault, dragging you into this for no reason, I feel so bad for you."
Esther rolled her eyes and mumbled, "Now you feel bad, where were you earlier?"
Seeing Owen’s cautious demeanor, she couldn’t bring herself to scold him further. She hesitated and then said, "It’s okay; The great Mr. Fitzwilliam will be here soon, once he arrives, we’ll open the door."
Owen asked perplexed, "Who’s The great Mr. Fitzwilliam?"
A never-before-felt sense of vigilance arose in him; Esther constantly looks down on all men around her, him included.
It was the first time he’d seen her exhibit such reverence and trust toward a man.
Esther saw his reaction and knew what he was thinking; she waved her hand, "The great Mr. Fitzwilliam is Elara’s husband, Elara Hale, my sister, remember?"
"Oh, got it." Owen breathed a sigh; as the saying goes, a friend’s husband is off-limits, Esther being so loyal, wouldn’t do anything to steal someone’s man.
The thought suddenly struck him that something didn’t add up, "Weren’t you saying she was raising the child alone and struggling?"
He even thought about sponsoring her before.
Esther Carter immediately felt guilty, "Ahem, wasn’t it because she met another really good husband later? Her previous husband was a piece of trash, kicked her out with nothing, treated her like garbage, and then she turned around and married the heir of the moneyed aristocracy, living a great life."
Owen Grayson was skeptical, "Really?"
He somehow felt that something was off.
Esther Carter quickly said, "Of course it’s true, would I lie to you?"
Owen Grayson nodded in agreement, certainly, she wouldn’t lie to him.
"So, when is The great Mr. Fitzwilliam coming?" Owen Grayson asked worriedly.
It’s not that he’s being cowardly, but it’s already eight-thirty, neighbors upstairs and downstairs are starting to head out, and Rosalind Jacobs keeps shouting outside. If the neighbors hear, how will Esther Carter live in the future?
It wouldn’t be good for her reputation if word got out.
Esther Carter was about to speak when she suddenly heard a deep voice from outside, "Move aside."
Her eyes lit up, she immediately stood up, excitedly saying, "He’s here, he’s here, The great Mr. Fitzwilliam is here! Elara Hale really came through!"
With that, she went to open the door.
As soon as the door opened, Rosalind Jacobs sprang into action, claws out, ready to pounce and settle the score with her. Unfortunately, Zion Fitzwilliam’s men had already firmly separated everyone else, turning the doorway into a vacuum barrier that Rosalind Jacobs and Kylie Dalton couldn’t break through, no matter how hard they tried.
Esther Carter was very safe.
Since she was safe, she felt relieved, after enduring so much scolding, she could finally speak up.
"Rosalind Jacobs, you can’t even keep a man, yet you have the nerve to ask me for an explanation? What did I ever do to you? After I knew he got engaged to you, I dumped him. It was him who broke off the engagement to beg me to take him back. Your issues aren’t mine to solve, why are you harassing me? Why didn’t you block the Grayson Family instead? Showing off your power in front of me, is that it?"
Hands on her hips, she aimed her words at everyone, "And you, and you," she pointed at Kylie Dalton and Mrs. Grayson, "don’t you know what your children are like? Please deal with your family affairs behind closed doors and don’t involve me, okay? If it doesn’t work out, just take him back, I don’t want him. Do whatever you want with him!"
Innocent Owen Grayson instantly tensed up, quickly pulling her back, "No, you already agreed to be my girlfriend, you can’t go back on your word, I’m not leaving with them, I’m yours!"
Esther Carter glared at him in irritation, "Anyway, you caused this mess, and I’m making it clear in front of everyone today, until you settle your past feelings, don’t come near me. I don’t play buy one get one free in relationships!"
Owen Grayson could see she was serious and was so nervous he was about to cry, "I won’t, in life or death, I’m yours! You can’t shake me off!"
Mrs. Grayson already couldn’t bear to watch.
She was just forced here by the Jacobs Family to take a look, she didn’t expect her son’s little girlfriend would attack everyone indiscriminately, even scolding her, and then immediately trying to dump her son.
This girl, quite fiery, but real. She actually kind of liked her. Not that there’s much choice, seeing her son acting like her loyal puppy?
Kylie Dalton was furious when she heard Esther Carter insult her daughter, pointing at Esther Carter’s nose and cursing, "You vixen! Home-wrecker! You seduced someone else’s boyfriend! You’ll die a horrible death! Acting all innocent, aren’t you just a mistress!"
Esther Carter, hands on her hips, jumped up, "Say that again, you old hag! Look at your face, tightened up like a zombie! Who are you trying to scare?"
Owen Grayson didn’t dare let her keep cursing, it didn’t matter if she made others angry, but what if she got herself upset?
He quickly hugged her waist, pressing down her flailing arms, "Please, ancestor, you’ve cursed enough, just go inside first, let me handle it."
Esther Carter kicked him, "Get away! I called The great Mr. Fitzwilliam to back me up, just to vent my anger! With The great Mr. Fitzwilliam here, you want me to back down?"
Zion Fitzwilliam stood there unmoved, while Miles Morgan brought a dozen men in black to tightly surround Rosalind Jacobs’ people, no matter how mad Rosalind Jacobs and Kylie Dalton got, they couldn’t get close enough to hit Esther Carter.
Clearly, the aim was to let Esther Carter vent to her heart’s content.
Owen Grayson could only hold onto her helplessly, "Give me a chance, let me handle it, alright? I promise to deal with it thoroughly, and I’ll never let them bother you again."
Once the situation was under control, Zion Fitzwilliam finally let Elara Hale come over, Elara Hale walked over to Esther Carter, taking her inside, persuading, "Leave this to Owen Grayson, it’s his fault, why are you getting so worked up? Letting others gossip about you, is that fun?"
Esther Carter paused for a moment, then really stopped, letting Elara Hale half-push, half-pull Owen Grayson into the room.
Owen Grayson shut the door.
Rosalind Jacobs and Kylie Dalton were furious.
"Let her come out! She has to give us an explanation!"
"Being a home-wrecker, seducing someone’s boyfriend, what’s her excuse for hiding?"
"Vixen! Get out here!"
Owen Grayson looked at them, his face darkening, "Enough!"
Rosalind Jacobs and Kylie Dalton had never seen him angry and were genuinely startled.
Mrs. Grayson was surprised looking at him, never imagined her rambunctious son had such a manly side.
It seems that fiery little girl played a big role.
Mrs. Grayson now held Esther Carter in higher regard.
As for Zion Fitzwilliam, he quietly stepped back two steps.
Owen Grayson was more responsible than he imagined, it seemed he didn’t need to intervene.
Owen Grayson walked up to Rosalind Jacobs, his expression cold, "When I was engaged with you and cheated, it was me, don’t drag Esther into this, yes, I admit I fell for her before breaking up with you, but that’s my fault, not hers. I had no feelings for you, and breaking the engagement was for your own good."
Rosalind Jacobs snorted, "For my own good? More like for you two, fooling around behind my back, Owen Grayson, what do you take me for?"
Owen Grayson stared at her, "Yes, I’m at fault, I apologize to you, as compensation, my father gave the Jacobs Family five or six big projects, if it was just about breaking the engagement, the Grayson Family wouldn’t have done this much, if you truly feel wronged, then give the projects back, and we’ll hash it out."
Rosalind Jacobs’ face changed.
