Writing Web Novels In America-Chapter 60 Sarah
Chapter 60: Chapter 60 Sarah
Wang Jian sat in Tom’s car, thinking about the information he had just searched for on the computer.
In the United States,
not only can prisons be privately run,
but the companies that operate private prisons can actually go public.
Besides that, American police stations, post offices, and power supply departments can all be privatized.
Even the Federal Reserve is a joint-stock company.
As Wang Jian stepped into the private prison, he couldn’t help but sigh to himself.
In this country, the power of capital is truly everywhere.
However, as a bestselling author with handsome earnings, he quickly appreciated the convenience of having money.
Wang Jian gave a sizeable tip to a few of the hired prison guards.
Then he moved from the bleak communal visiting room with its crude partition glass to a luxurious private visitation room.
Inside the private room, there were vending machines and the latest variety of magazines and books.
He even saw "I’m a Great Mage" on the shelf for sale.
Wang Jian sat down, wondering how he could prevent Sarah from realizing that the original Wang Jian had been replaced.
But he noticed Tom slipping a few hundred-dollar bills to the prison guards.
After Tom sat down beside him, Wang Jian asked, "Why are you giving more money?"
Tom shrugged and said, "Got a bit hungry, thought I’d try a few lobsters."
"I heard the restaurant here is pretty good."
Wang Jian: "..."
About fifteen minutes later, Sarah was brought up by a plump African American woman.
Wang Jian looked at Sarah before him and compared her to the image in his mind, finding that she’d changed a lot.
Her originally lively brown hair had turned into a lifeless short cut.
Even her once bright and cunning eyes now seemed a bit dazed.
For some reason, upon seeing Sarah like this, Wang Jian felt a jolt in his brain and stood up.
Seeing Wang Jian, Sarah’s eyes lit up, and she walked over quickly.
But upon reaching Wang Jian’s side and seeing the well-dressed young man opposite her, she abruptly stopped.
"Wang?" Sarah’s raspy voice asked for confirmation.
"It’s me." Wang Jian supported Sarah and had her sit down.
"You..." He wasn’t sure what to say, "You’ve changed a lot."
"Not as much as you have," Sarah said with a forced smile, "You’ve become a bestselling author."
"You have no idea how popular ’I’m a Great Mage’ is in prison."
"The rental rights to a single copy of ’I’m A Great Mage’ can swap for three cigarettes. When I told them that the author of ’I’m a Great Mage’ is my brother, they didn’t believe me."
Wang Jian looked at Sarah as she chattered away and suddenly asked, "How are you coping in there?"
Sarah suddenly stopped talking, and then the tears started to flow.
The images in Wang Jian’s mind and the sight of Sarah before him began to overlap.
He turned to Tom and Matthew and said, "Is there any way to get Sarah out on bail?"
The two men looked at each other, then shook their heads.
Tom said, "Once sentenced, there’s no way to bail her out."
"But an appeal can be filed, though, it takes time."
Wang Jian said, "Then file an appeal."
Then, he asked Matthew, "What did you mean by ’upgrading a cabin’?"
Matthew pointed at the prison guards and said, "Pay money, that’s what."
"However, I suggest you leave it to a lawyer to handle."
"Is there a problem?" Wang Jian frowned.
"Not really, it’s mainly because you’re not familiar with the process and might get taken advantage of."
Wang Jian nodded and looked towards Tom.
Understanding the cue, Tom stood up and walked toward the two prison guards.
While Wang Jian was catching up with Sarah, the lobster Tom had ordered was served.
Perhaps because Wang Jian and his party had tipped generously, the guards also provided each of them with an extra glass of red wine.
Watching Sarah wolf down her food, Wang Jian said, "Give me some time; I will get you out of here as quickly as I can."
Sarah stopped her voracious eating and looked up at Wang Jian, "If it’s too much trouble, forget about it."
At that moment, Tom came over and said, "2000 US dollars, for an upgrade to a private cell."
"The private cells for lesser offenders come with paper, newspapers, and such, the conditions are fairly decent."
Wang Jian nodded, then took a book called "I’m a Great Mage" from the shopping cupboard and pulled out a booklet from his pocket.
He handed these to Sarah.
"’I’m a Great Mage’ can be traded with others, and this booklet teaches complete beginners how to write novels."
"You can write out your fantasies in there to pass the time."
"Trust me, time flies especially fast when you immerse yourself in thought."
Sarah took the booklet with a wry smile, "Right now, all I think about each day is how to escape from this place."
"Then write about it, fantasize about how you would make your prison break," Wang Jian said with a smile.
Half an hour later.
Wang Jian left the prison.
He asked Tom, "Can we file an appeal?"
Tom replied with some difficulty, "I am a copyright lawyer; I’m not familiar with criminal law."
Matthew immediately answered, "I’m familiar, I’m familiar. It’s just that I was assigned as a lawyer because I’m a recent graduate."
After pondering for a moment, Wang Jian said, "Then draft an agreement. I’ll hire you as Sarah’s appeal lawyer."
"If you can get her out, I don’t mind making you my personal lawyer."
Matthew nodded vigorously, "I will do my utmost."
Shortly after the three of them left the prison, Sarah was found by the prison’s boss lady.
"Do you really know the author of ’I’m a Great Mage’?"
Sarah hesitated for a moment but still nodded her head.
She passed over the copy of "I’m a Great Mage" that Wang Jian had given her, saying, "It’s signed by him."
The boss lady took the book with a mix of pride and coyness, "My boyfriend loves this book. I’ll give it to him the next time he visits."
"By the way," the burly woman pointed at Sarah and declared, "This woman, I’ve got her back. You all got that?"
"Understood," a group of women behind her responded.
After they left, Sarah let out a soft sigh, "You’re really on your way to becoming someone important, to the point I’m no longer worthy of you."
Once her outdoor time ended and she was back in her private cell, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Eventually, she got up and looked at the booklet Wang Jian had given her.
Then, on the paper within this booklet, she wrote down two words, "Prison Break."
Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, a screenwriter named Paul Shuering had also just visited his brother in prison.
Returning home, as he recalled his brother’s words about wanting nothing but to escape the prison,
Paul pondered for a moment and slowly typed two words on his computer.
However, these two words were identical to the two on Sarah’s manuscript far away in New York.
Incredibly, they too were "Prison Break."
