Young Master Vance Has An Enchanting Wife!-Chapter 414: Adam Owens Disappears
Audrey Vance was eager to get back to sleep, but seeing Maxwell Vance’s belly, she couldn’t help but ask, "Are you okay? What if something happens..."
"I’m fine. It’s almost five months now, what could possibly go wrong? Auntie, you look tired, why don’t you go back and get some rest?"
Seeing that Maxwell was sincerely asking her to leave, Audrey didn’t insist. After exchanging a few pleasantries, she left.
As soon as Audrey left, Maxwell immediately went to Adam Owens’s ward, weighed down with worry, to check on his injuries. Since the knife wound had pierced his ribs, even after lying in bed for a dozen days, Adam still had limited mobility and needed help just to get out of bed.
"Adam, I came to see you. Are you feeling any better?" Maxwell had someone bring a chair over and sat beside Adam’s bed, inquiring about his well-being.
Since their last argument, Adam had been harboring resentment towards Maxwell. He never really liked her and could barely hold a conversation with her. Naturally, he treated her with indifference.
"Why are you here?" Adam glanced at her with disdain, as if he cared but was actually annoyed, telling her brusquely, "Go back quickly. Taking care of your pregnancy is the priority."
Maxwell was once again met with a cold shoulder, leaving her heart feeling chilly. She clenched her fingers with a hint of bitterness and forced a smile, "I came because I care about you, can’t you see? It’s not easy to come over here in the middle of the night, and if it weren’t for love, why would I go through this?"
Maxwell had grown accustomed to using love to emotionally manipulate Adam, constantly asserting that she worked so hard out of love for him. Little did she know, what men hated most was using love as a pretext for moral coercion.
"That’s your problem. I never asked you to love me!" Adam, who had long lost any affectionate feelings for Maxwell, responded coldly and then turned away, leaving her with his back.
Maxwell unwillingly stared at Adam’s resolute back, her fingers unconsciously clenched tighter, "Do you really have to treat me this way, Adam?"
Her words did not elicit any response from Adam, clearly showing he had reached the point where he couldn’t even be bothered to speak to her.
"If it were May Morgan standing beside you now, would you still react this way? You’d probably be overjoyed like you’d found a treasure, right?" Maxwell wiped away tears from the corners of her eyes and complained bitterly, "I don’t understand, what do you like about May Morgan? Just because she’s prettier than me? Has she ever really cared about you? Look, she marries one man after another, when has she ever focused on you? You’re humiliating yourself, don’t you see? You deserve to be abandoned by her..."
"That’s enough, get out!" Before Maxwell could finish her scornful words, Adam suddenly shouted in anger, ordering her to leave.
Maxwell was startled by his fury. It took her a moment before she slowly stood up from the chair, "Fine, I’ll leave, I’ll be outside looking out for you."
At the moment she turned away, the lingering affectionate gaze she had for Adam disappeared, replaced only by bitterness and determination.
Maxwell stayed in the outer lounge for an hour, feeling it was about time, and then indicated to a nearby servant to go in and check if Adam had fallen asleep.
After the servant went in and then returned, they told Maxwell that Master Adam was already asleep and in a deep sleep. Because the medication Adam took contained sleep-inducing elements, once asleep, he would fall into a deep slumber.
Hearing that Adam was indeed fast asleep, Maxwell got up from the sofa and instructed the nearby servants to rest in other rooms and that she would call them if needed.
The servants, eager for some proper rest, quickly left Adam’s ward as Maxwell instructed, leaving only her and Adam in the room.
After sending everyone away, Maxwell, feeling a bit guilty, shut the door and tiptoed to Adam’s bedside. Fearing the servants might have been mistaken, she nudged Adam to check if he truly was asleep.
Once she confirmed Adam was indeed fast asleep, Maxwell took out a small vial from her pocket, opened it, and carefully pried open Adam’s mouth, quickly pouring some dark brown liquid into it.
The liquid swiftly entered Adam’s mouth, initially producing no effect, as Adam continued to sleep soundly without any response.
Worried, Maxwell reached out to feel Adam’s breathing, to see if he was still alive. Just as her hand neared Adam, he suddenly opened his eyes, startling her half to death.
"Adam, you’re awake?" Maxwell was so frightened she staggered back a few steps and collapsed into the chair beside her.
Yet Adam seemed oblivious to her words, suddenly sitting up in bed with a vacant expression, resembling the living dead.
Seeing him like this, Maxwell was terrified and hurriedly tried to go over and grab him.
"Adam, what’s wrong with you? Do you still remember me?" Maxwell, disregarding her own abdominal pain, stepped forward again intending to hold onto Adam and help him regain consciousness.
But as her hand reached for Adam’s arm again, he viciously slapped her away.
This time, Adam’s action sent Maxwell sprawling across the floor, nearly causing a miscarriage.
"Ah, it hurts so much, help, help!" With a sharp pain coming from her abdomen, Maxwell couldn’t bother with Adam’s condition and quickly clung to the nearby chair, shouting loudly for the servants outside.
The servants, having gone to rest in the nearby ward, rushed over when they heard Maxwell’s cries. By then, Adam was nowhere to be found.
The first thing they saw was Maxwell clutching her stomach, looking pained, which threw them into a panic. They rushed to help her upstairs to the obstetrics department for emergency treatment. Only after they were nearly done did someone realize that Adam was missing from the bed.
"Oh no, where has Master Adam gone?"
Knowing full well that Adam was in no condition to move around freely, the moment they noticed his absence, they panicked, hastily calling Audrey on the phone in the middle of the night.
By the time Audrey rushed to the hospital to check the situation, Adam was already nowhere to be found.
Fortunately, Maxwell was taken to the hospital in time, and since her gestation was already advanced, it wasn’t easy for a miscarriage to occur, so the baby was ultimately saved.
Unable to find Adam, Audrey had no way to explain to the Owens Family. She questioned the servants responsible for caring for Adam one by one and learned that before Adam disappeared, he was always with Maxwell.
This was puzzling. Given how much Maxwell liked Adam, she wouldn’t harm him for no reason. But what had really happened in that room before? Why did Adam suddenly disappear, and how did Maxwell end up close to having a miscarriage?
