Chapter 112: ANOTHER ATTACK

Finnegan

"The Dorian partnership," Nathan Whales, a member of the board, spoke up from his seat, his sea blue eyes fixed on the screen before us where the quarterly projections for the business year were displayed.

"When do we expect a formal announcement?"

"When both parties are satisfied with the terms and not a second before." I grunted in reply.

The board meeting had started at nine exactly because I had made it clear in year one that anyone arriving late would find the door closed.

They could wait three months for another meeting. Arthur was out of the country recently so he couldn’t make it for the meeting, Abigail would send him the briefings later.

Twelve people sat around the table, one of them being my mother. She sat next to me, her reading glasses on and her pen moving across her notepad.

"The marketing allocation for the second half was different from what was actually spent," Mother declared, her glasses dropping slightly as she looked at the screen. "And why is that, son?"

My mother didn’t call me son except during board meetings just so she could belittle my position in the presence of everyone else.

"Yes, due to the launch, we reallocated accordingly."

Her green eyes narrowed. "That reallocation should have come to the board first."

Like hell it should have. Board members or not, this was my company. I made the decisions.

"It fell within my discretionary limits. It didn’t require board approval."

"Oh?" She scoffed, raising her brows. "I’m simply suggesting that given the scale of the launch, we should have been informed."

The table had gone quiet, everyone watching me and my loving mother as she tried to fucking humiliate me before everyone.

Behind me, from the chair where my assistant sat with her tablet and her notes, I heard the faintest huff and the corner of my mouth moved before I could stop it.

I would bet Abigail was also fed up with Mother. My assistant didn’t exactly like to be talked down to.

But she’s a rather skillful liar, apparently. The quirk on my lips disappeared. "Next slide."

The meeting ran for ninety long minutes. Mother of course had a problem with every single thing. I knew she loved Wolfe Corp and she had worked with Dad to raise it from the rubble, bickering with her before board members would be undignified.

When the meeting finally ended, I pulled Atticus aside to discuss the updates on the court case against Carlton Gayle while the rest of the board members discussed among themselves.

"The final verdict is tomorrow," Atticus replied. "Do not worry sir, we’ll crush him like we crushed the Manhattan case."

My brows snapped together in confusion. "Is that some sort of metaphor? What is the Manhattan case?"

Atticus’ face blanched and he gave a nervous chuckle, waving his hand between us. "Oh, never mind sir. Just an errand I ran for Mrs Wolfe. Excuse me,"

An errand for my mother? Atticus was the company’s lawyer. We didn’t have any Manhattan case. What on earth was Atticus and my mother up to?

"Finnegan, a word in your office?" Mother called from the door and without a word I followed her out of the conference room with Abigail trailing behind us.

I hated to admit it but she looked stunning in that cream colored dress. It draped around her hips, hugging her upper body rather snuggly.

The neckline was decent and that only made my body tighten even harder with need. I knew what she looked like under that dress, naked, wet and mewling for me.

There was something off about the blank serene look on her face. Was she alright?

Or was this some ploy to play on my emotions?

She strutted to her desk, while Mother and I walked into my office.

"PXB Media, I’ve booked an interview with them for you two weeks from now. The interview will run in their spring executive profile and it will be good for the company’s public image."

My shoes skidded to a stop. "You confirmed a media interview on my behalf without asking me?"

"I’m telling you now, aren’t I?" She scoffed, her hawk eyes moving around my office.

"This needs to be redone before the interview. Pictures of your office will be featured in their magazine and this is too mediocre. I’ll send a decorator next week. Devin had considerably better taste than you." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

She just had to bring him up. Of course she did. She lost her favorite son and got stuck with me.

A knock at the open door drew me from my thoughts.

"Your meeting with Mr Goldman at Tanaka’s is in an hour, sir," my assistant announced, her blue eyes looking at anywhere else but me. "The drive is twenty minutes minimum,"

Mother’s lips curled in irritation at the sight of my assistant. "I suppose that means we’ll talk later soon."

Two hours later, Goldman and I shook hands in a small private dinning room in Tanaka. It was a Japanese restaurant with low lighting, a private, serene atmosphere and I preferred having meetings with investors here because it did help them relax.

My assistant however did not seem to like the place. Hell, she looked as white as she did back at the hospital. Was she afraid of Japanese restaurants as well?

"Keep in touch, Wolfe," Goldman grinned as he left, closing the door behind him.

The bulb above us flickered rapidly, and Abigail gasped, her eyes wide and shaky as she gripped the wall to steady herself.

A memory of her looking the exact same way in the elevator, months ago slipped in my mind. A panic attack. She was about to have another-

The lights went out entirely, plunging the room into thick complete darkness for a few seconds and my assistant took a plunge to the ground.

"Shit!" I cursed diving to catch her head before it hit the table in the room.
