Chapter 69: A HAUNTING FEELING

Abigail

"The witness is solid," Raymond said. "Well hopefully, she is. I need to verify before I get your hopes up."

I shifted the phone to my other ear, watching the city blur past us through the passenger window while Annette drove us home.

"What about the person you were tracking before on the case?"

The progress made on investigating my parent’s death was slow as a snail.

A baby snail to be precise.

We found nothing. Annette had hacked all the leads we got, trying to get anything at all from the company mom and Dad worked for, but it felt like we were just spinning in circles.

"It was a dead end," Detective Raymond said dryly. "He doesn’t know anything useful, either that or he knows everything and isn’t talking, which is pretty much the same thing."

"We hit a wall on our end too," I sighed, dripping my head against the window. My day off had been splendid, well until now.

"I’ll get back to you on this witness, okay? Stay safe, Miss,"

"You too, Old man."

"Now wait a minute, who are you calling old-"

I hung up chuckling. "He’s so easy to rile up,"

"He didn’t find anything, did he?" Annette sighed, stepping on the brakes as we moved into a hell of a traffic.

"Yeah, whoever killed them really doesn’t want to be found." I tucked the phone into my bag, scraping my nails over the leather. "How long till we get home, I need my bed,"

"Twenty minutes if this idiot in the BMW moves his ass," She leaned on the horn, slamming it hard. "MOVE- oh great, he moved." She chuckled, settling back in her seat and stomping on the accelerator.

The shopping bags in the back of our seat fell off as she zoomed home. Finn was on a trip and it definitely wasn’t work related or he would have taken me along. He had said he wouldn’t be back until Monday.

My shoulders slumped in relief as I leaned deeper into the car seat. At least I didn’t have to work in terror around him, afraid that he would see all the secrets I was hiding on my forehead.

It had been two weeks since the car launch, barely a week after Finnegan had fired Tyler. I heard from his buddies that he left NYC. God, I would too if I were him.

What company would want to hire you if they found out you were fired from the great Wolfe Corporation?

"Sanctuary opens tonight." Annette piped up, wiggling her brows at me.

A soft laugh left my lips. "I know it opens tonight."

"And tomorrow too, because of the founder’s birthday."

"Yeah, I saw it on the forum. It will be open five days this month instead of three."

A very enticing offer especially with Finnegan out of the country. He wouldn’t show up so if I went, he couldn’t possibly catch me right?

What was the point of going if he wouldn’t be there though?

I almost smacked myself in the face at the thought. No, there were billions of other men besides Finnegan Wolfe in the world. I could and I would find someone else to fuck me.

I had to get rid of this crazy need for him if I wanted to protect my job. No matter how sexy his voice was when he spoke dirty to me, or the way his muscles rippled when I had his cock halfway down my throat, slobbering over his thick, turgid, di-

"So are we going or not?" Annette’s question yanked me out of my dirty thoughts.

I groaned, slapping a palm over my face. "Yes we’re going, happy?"

"Happy as a clam, babes. We’ll find you another man, I’m sure,"

Yeah, I was sure too. But he wouldn’t be Ares.

You like him, don’t you?

Great, now I had Alicia’s voice plaguing my head. Annette swerved the corner of the street that led to our building while I relayed last week Wednesday over and over in my head.

Something smelled fishy about what had happened. At the launch Alicia had walked into that bathroom and told me about Walsh and the fake press and Carlton’s ridiculous plan but she didn’t have to do that.

She could have gone to Finnegan directly and gotten herself a gold star or she could have said nothing and let Carlton’s plan land. Either way, Alicia Duke would have won and I’m either useless or fired.

Instead she told me. Now I would say she probably did so out of whatever speck of goodness was in her heart, but then last Thursday she was at my desk going through my computer.

It didn’t add up. The math was wrong somewhere and I couldn’t find where.

"Hypothetically," I murmured as we trudged out of the car into the building, carrying the bags from our girls’ day out.

"Uh oh."

"What? I just said hypothetically," I chuckled, rolling my eyes at the scrunched up look on her face. I could come clean and tell her it was about work, but I signed an NDA as a worker at Wolfe’s Corp.

Confidentiality was key for me. We couldn’t discuss whatever happened in the office with anyone else. Of course, he wouldn’t know if I told Annette but I just liked to stick to it.

"Hypothetically," I repeated firmly, sliding the key into.the door and pushing it open.

"Imagine, you had someone who is consistently a bitch to you, like clockwork, and then out of nowhere, she does something nice, something genuinely helpful when she absolutely could have used that same opportunity to benefit herself instead."

"How nice are we talking?" She drawled, popping the light switch on while I dumped the bags on the bed.

"Nice enough that if she hadn’t done it, things could have gone to shit for me."

"Hm, That’s suspicious as hell."

I knew it. I wasn’t just being paranoid. "You think?"

"Obviously. Nobody who’s been consistently awful to you suddenly does something nice out of the goodness of their heart. That’s not how bitches work. She either wants something or she’s setting something up. Or both."

"That’s what I thought." I murmured, fishing out the takeout meals we had gotten from the bag. Alicia was up to something. She had definitely done more to my computer than change my wallpaper.

I would start investigating once I got back to the company on Monday, tonight though, I had to get ready for the club. If I had known what would happen that night at the club, however, I would have sat my ass back home because this night, shit went downhill, fast.
