Chapter 616: Bubbles in the Bloody Water

Garrett silently squatted outside the curtain, joining the healers who had arrived earlier.

Elder Wood’s oldest disciple, Priest Gavin, shifted aside and waved him over:

"How is it?"

"Not good." Garrett was a bit dejected. Sitting down beside him, he hung his head low: "They won’t let me see."

Without knowing the exact placement of the stethoscope, an ultrasound couldn’t be performed, and many other tests were left undone.

The information they had confirmed the patient’s condition—it was beyond their capabilities!

The healers exchanged glances, a faint smile appearing in their eyes, though they refrained from showing more due to the presence of the count. Priest Gavin shook his head:

"No choice, treating those of high status is just like this. Come, while they’re busy, let’s discuss this lady’s condition..."

The healers conversed back and forth. Soon, Garrett learned that the lady was the count’s youngest daughter, and his most cherished one;

At 21 years old, she unfortunately had no achievements in the paths of warriors or spellcasters, her constitution merely that of an ordinary person;

Married for three years, she had been pregnant once before, which tragically ended in miscarriage;

This pregnancy had been difficult from the start. Lady Caroline had been vomiting since discovering she was pregnant and it had never eased;

There was occasional bleeding, not a large amount, but still concerning...

As they spoke, the curtain was flung open and a maid rushed out with a copper basin. Garrett, catching it out of the corner of his eye, leaped up like a shot rabbit and dashed over:

"Wait! Let me see!"

Priest Gavin couldn’t stop him in time. Garrett had already pounced beside the basin and squatted down.

The maid, startled, went pale and crouched down, instinctively using her body to shield the basin of bloody water, curling up:

"Sir! This is the lady’s privacy! You cannot see!"

This interaction turned all eyes toward them. Priest Gavin leaned towards Garrett, his expression concerned but hesitant to intervene;

Nearby, a mage craned his neck, nearly writing "I’m curious, I want to know what Garrett is looking at" on his face.

However, facing a basin of a woman’s effluence, he couldn’t bring himself to look as blatantly as Garrett;

The God of War’s bishop fiddled with his holy emblem and muttered something under his breath;

Beside him, a priestess of the Spring Goddess instinctively stepped back from Garrett, trying hard to control her muscles from showing disgust:

You would dig through that!

How disgusting!

The priest of the Nature God really isn’t particular, oh, neither are the mages, necromancers especially, messing with whatever foul things...

Count Agel glanced over from afar, his expression slightly moved, neither consenting nor obstructing. In the silence, only Garrett was in front of the maid, blocking her path:

"I know! I just need to see if there’s anything unusual, anything amiss—this is for diagnosis, not what you think! Put it down, let me see!"

"Let him see."

Count Agel finally spoke. If others could disregard filth and lower their status for the sake of healing his daughter, what hesitation should he have?

The maid, as if granted amnesty, quickly placed the basin on the ground. She didn’t even have time to get up, using her hands and feet to crawl back several steps and shrink behind the curtain.

Garrett no longer paid her any mind. He knelt on the ground, deeply bowed, and carefully stirred the contents of the basin with a mage’s hand, occasionally lifting some to look closer.

The more he looked, the graver his expression became, until he abruptly stood up and hurried to Count Agel:

"My lord, please allow me to examine the miss immediately!"

He looked directly at the count, his expression stern. Though it sounded like a request, his tone left no room for doubt:

"This method of spellcasting requires direct touch on the skin of the abdomen. I can do it without sight, blindfolded if necessary—"

His voice was urgent, his body slightly leaning forward, unconsciously conveying a plea. Count Agel gazed at him deeply, his expression turning stern:

"Is there no other way?"

"For the miss’s health!" Garrett’s reply was firm:

"I’ve just seen something troubling, and it must be verified. It’s best if there’s nothing wrong, but if it’s as I suspect, delay could be problematic!"

"What did you see?" The count’s expression grew more somber. Garrett glanced at the basin, then back at the count, his face hesitant:

Would the great men of this world, counts, nobles, high-ranking knights, be willing to squat there and look? Probably not.

After a moment’s hesitation, he pulled out the Arcane Eye ring and activated

it with mental power. A cherry-sized orb of light drifted past, and in front of him, a screen silently unfolded.

The Arcane Eye descended, spun, and zoomed in. Garrett glanced at the count, seeing no disgust, and then pointed at the image on the screen, adjusting the focus as he explained:

"Look, there are small clusters in the bloody water, like bubbles. This shouldn’t be happening—I’m worried there’s something wrong inside her body, we need to use magic to check—"

Not far away, the healers on the sofa perked up their ears to his words. Priest Gavin tried to stretch his neck to peek into the basin, unable to find the right angle when suddenly, "thump":

A medical mage from the Magic Council, leaning too far out, accidentally fell from the sofa. He clumsily got up, surreptitiously summoning an Arcane Eye, sending it floating towards the basin... freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

Count Agel peered closely at the screen, his brows furrowing more and more. He had seen various kinds of blood: gushing out, spurting, coughed up in great gouts, splattering everywhere...

He had seen bloody water with bubbles more than once. But those were mixtures of blood and air, the air dispersing naturally. What he saw now was different; those bubbles were clearly made of flesh and blood.

He turned to Garrett, his face grave:

"What is this?"

"I can’t be certain yet." Garrett gently shook his head, dispersing the light screen. Though he had a suspicion,—

"I need to use my own invented spell to check again to confirm."

Count Agel said nothing, went straight behind the curtain. After a deep, prolonged sound, he turned and came out, signaling to Garrett:

"You perform the spell."

Garrett stepped forward, seeing the lady’s fearful eyes, he quickly turned around. He reached into his pocket, looking for a scarf or something to blindfold himself, but before he could find it, he was pulled inside:

"Stop fussing! Just look! If I let you in, I have no doubts about you!"

Garrett, in the end, closed his eyes at the bedside. He asked the maid to evenly apply a bottle of glycerin, then placed his hand on the pregnant woman’s abdomen. The ultrasound spell activated, and immediately, his brow furrowed tightly.

In his meditative vision, the ultrasound spell returned a dense echo, like falling snow.
