Abyss System The Rise of the Lord-Chapter 72 document
Zaber gripped the dagger embedded in his right shoulder blade firmly with his left hand and yanked it out in one swift motion. As the steel separated from his flesh, blood spurted and dripped onto the ground. The pain arrived delayed, spreading through his veins like a hot flame.
The dagger was stained with Zaber’s blood as well. Without a moment’s hesitation, he wiped it on the inner part of his clothing, cleaning off as much blood as possible. Then, with calm steps, he walked toward the document preparer.
The employee had crawled backward into the corner of the wall, his eyes frozen with the terror of impending death. Zaber bent down in front of him and plunged the dagger into his heart without any emotion.
Zaber turned and headed toward the desk.
He reached the desk and opened the drawer. Inside were several documents and a small, rusted box made of black iron. As he reached for it, a sudden, intense pain struck his shoulder.
The wound from the dagger burned with bitter agony.
Zaber’s eyes widened, his pupils contracting sharply. He gripped the desk with both hands, barely keeping his body upright. His breathing grew labored.
His gaze involuntarily fell on the dagger embedded in the corpse.
"This dagger... did it have such a property?" he whispered. "It has been about ten seconds since I pulled it out..."
The pain was intensifying.
Trying to distract himself, Zaber opened the other drawers as well. The remaining two also contained documents and papers. From the very last drawer, several pouches emerged—full of money.
He wasted no time. He bundled the documents and slipped them into his inner pocket, then fastened the pouches to his belt.
When he lifted the rusted iron box from above, it unexpectedly split in two. The top and bottom parts separated. In the middle stood an object resembling a bishop piece from chess—white in color.
Zaber took the bishop piece in his hand and looked at the bottom.
It had strange, intricate lines. They were not random but seemed drawn according to a certain system.
Zaber immediately understood the box was unnecessary. He gripped the bishop piece tightly, headed toward the door, and left the room.
Outside, the guild employee who had brought him here was standing by the door.
Upon seeing Zaber, he spoke in a dissatisfied tone.
"Is it done? Why didn’t you inform me?"
Zaber did not respond.
He raised his hand. A chain shot from his palm and pierced the employee’s forehead. Zaber pulled the chain—the soul emerged as well, but he paid no attention to it.
His entire focus was on leaving this place as quickly as possible.
The employee’s corpse collapsed to the ground. He had not even managed to utter a single word.
Zaber ran to the entrance area of the merchants’ guild. He glanced around, steadied his breathing, straightened his posture, and began walking slowly toward the door as if nothing had happened.
The people around were busy with each other, documents, and trade. No one had even noticed Zaber.
When Zaber reached the door, he involuntarily turned and looked inside once more.
He saw the employee from yesterday.
The employee was staring at him with a cold gaze.
Zaber did not stop.
After distancing himself about ten meters from the door, he glanced back once more and suddenly began running.
As he ran through the crowded street among the people, the identity document came to his mind for a moment.
He looked at several carriages passing on the road.
"Come on... let us confuse you a bit," he said inwardly. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Zaber took out the document and threw it toward a carriage being pulled by horses. The document was small and thick rectangular, so it flew well, but it passed over the carriage.
Zaber immediately ran to the other side of the road, picked up the document from the ground, approached another carriage coming from the opposite direction. As the carriage passed by, he tossed the document inside.
Zaber smiled with satisfaction.
Zaber was running toward the inn.
The only thing on his mind was to get as far away from the merchants’ guild as possible.
His thoughts were jumbled. He was calculating the danger.
If the document preparer was that strong, then there are even stronger ones in that place. If I am discovered, I will die very quickly. Killing him was luck—I anticipated where the attack would come from. It was a fifty-fifty chance. But the others... I do not know.
At that time, in the inn near the city entrance, Shoyu was sitting in Zaber’s room.
The room was quiet.
Very quiet.
Shoyu was sitting by the window. From outside came the voices of merchants, the creaking of carriage wheels, the daily noise of people. But as these sounds entered the room, they seemed to be stifled.
She sat motionless, her hands on her knees.
Time was passing.
Very slowly.
Shoyu felt this. Every breath, every heartbeat was felt separately. But there was no anxiety on her face. Her eyes were calm, her gaze steady.
Inside, however, the scene was different.
What if he does not return?
I searched for the seal for a month but could not find a way to obtain it...
This thought struck.
Shoyu did not suppress it immediately. Nor did she hide it. She looked at this thought—as if looking at an enemy.
There were many strong ones there. More than twenty of my subordinates lost their lives while trying to obtain the seal.
Could he not return?
He is mysterious, Shoyu thought.
Such people return. Even without the seal, they return alive. Because they have their own ways.
Kilyan, standing by the door, opened and closed his mouth several times but did not speak. Finally, he said in a low voice.
"Miss... too much time has passed."
Shoyu did not turn her head.
"We wait," she said briefly.
"If..." Kilyan tried to continue.
Shoyu raised her hand.
"The word ’if’ is not needed now."
Kilyan fell silent. He looked at Shoyu’s face. There was no fear there. No doubt either. Only... determination.
She does not believe, Kilyan thought.
She is calculating.
Shoyu closed her eyes.
The merchants’ guild.
Clean from the outside. The opposite from the inside.
Shoyu looked at the slime at the foot of the bed.
She stood, picked it up. It was soft, perfect for hugging. Shoyu pressed it to her chest.
"Kyu... kyu..."
The slime made a soft sound.
Shoyu felt a bit relieved.
I did not even ask his name...
And what he will do with an anthill and a slime—an incomprehensible person...
Shoyu opened her eyes. For a moment, the noise from beyond the window grew louder. As if someone was running.
She did not stand.
"Hmmm... hmmm..." she hummed while hugging the slime, closed her eyes again, and gently rocked.
If he does not return—I will choose another path.
But if he returns...
Shoyu’s lips moved very subtly.
"Then everything will be fine... I cannot think too much for a stranger," she whispered.
The room fell silent again.
A short while later—
Creak.
The door opened.
Shoyu looked at the door. Kilyan was sitting in the corner of the room; he also stood and looked at the door.
Zaber entered. With slow steps.
Shoyu stood and placed the slime on the bed.
"I am glad you returned. Going without a plan leads to this. Now listen to my plan—"
Zaber approached Shoyu.
"I obtained the seal," he said in a low, clear voice.
Shoyu nodded.
"I know it was difficult to obtain. I do not blame—"
She stopped.
"Wait... did you say ’obtained’?"
Zaber extended his hand halfway forward. He opened his clenched fist.
"Is this the seal you mentioned?"
Shoyu furrowed her brows. She took the white bishop piece from Zaber’s hand and examined it carefully.
With surprise, she said.
"I have not seen its structure either. But if we look at the bottom... yes. This is that seal."
Zaber spoke in an emotionless tone.
"The work is done. Now give me the two hundred gold."
Shoyu hesitated and looked at Zaber.
"How did you obtain this? Your appearance is also good—"
Behind Zaber, Kilyan gestured with his hand toward his right shoulder blade.
Shoyu circled Zaber and looked at his back; her expression changed.
Zaber lowered his hand and began removing his coat.
Shoyu said with concern.
"You are wounded..."
Zaber replied in a cold tone.
"This is not your business. We are strangers. Give the money and continue on your path. I will do the same."
The joy from obtaining the seal was washed away by Zaber’s coldness.
Shoyu handed the seal to Kilyan. Then she brought her left hand close to the ring on her right hand. Two pouches emerged from the ring.
"This is two hundred gold. As agreed."
Zaber took the pouches and sat at the table. He turned the pouches upside down, spilling the gold coins onto the table.
He counted them one by one and put them back into the pouch.
Shoyu said angrily.
"Do you not trust me?"
Zaber replied without stopping.
"Trust?
I do not even trust that I have eaten food until I swallow what I am chewing. And now you expect me to simply trust?"
Shoyu’s face grew serious.
"Fine. What will you do next? If you have no work, at the same price, we need to obtain the seals in two more cities as well."
Zaber said indifferently.
"I need to do something. I will consider your offer."
Shoyu thought for a moment.
"Good."
Saying this, she left Zaber’s room.
The door closed.
Zaber put all the coins on the table into the pouch without separating them. He stood and locked the door.
He approached his coat to examine the documents he had brought.
