Chapter 81: Chapter 81 blood truth

Zaber turned back and approached Shoyu. He thrust his sword into the ground and extended his palm toward her.

—A good deal.

Shoyu did not reach out. Displeasure was unmistakable in her voice.

—Only for you. Not for me.

Zaber furrowed his brows, slowly withdrew his hand, and pulled the sword from the earth.

—Then let us get to work. I am ready to set out.

Shoyu scratched her brow, hesitating.

—What? We leave immediately?

Zaber remained silent for a moment, organizing his thoughts.

I consumed the souls of over six hundred slimes. That granted me additional immunity. Fatigue no longer registers... yet I do not know how long this state will last.

He looked at Shoyu and continued:

—I want the money quickly.

Shoyu let out a heavy sigh.

—Very well. Then listen. The next city is called Divorn. A very large city. It is a strategic point for Lanois against Ludovis. If we find something even more valuable than a seal there, the remaining seals will not matter. In truth, one seal would suffice... but I wish to demonstrate my seriousness.

Zaber replied in a cold tone:

—Then we depart.

Kilyan stepped forward and stood calmly.

—Sir, we are ready to move out. The luggage is with the guards.

Zaber looked at him in surprise.

—You have guards?

Kilyan nodded proudly.

—Of course. They remain unseen. They operate covertly.

Zaber glanced around for a moment.

—Good. Tell them to clear the path ahead of us.

Shoyu stepped forward, her voice sharpening.

—You cannot give orders to them. Only I can.

Zaber grew serious.

—I am not ordering them. I am ordering Kilyan.

Shoyu’s gaze sharpened.

—He takes orders only from me.

Zaber replied indifferently:

—Do as you wish. Just show me which direction Divorn lies.

Shoyu pointed with her hand toward the wide plains on the left side of the village.

—That way. Approximately one month’s journey.

Zaber said in an emotionless tone:

—Good. I will set out. We will meet in the city.

Shoyu hesitated slightly and warned:

—Be careful. The people of this village were brutally killed by someone. If you encounter the one responsible, I advise you to flee. Such slaughter cannot be carried out by ordinary beings.

Zaber gave a faint smile.

I killed this village for the soul chains. And now you advise me to flee from myself?

Without looking back, he began to walk.

Behind him, Shoyu watched his retreating figure and whispered under her breath:

—This man... is very strange.

As Zaber left the village, Shoyu stared after him with suspicion.

—I am beginning to hate him, — she said in a low but firm voice.

Kilyan stepped forward.

—Why, my lady?

Shoyu did not take her eyes off Zaber’s distant silhouette.

—There is no emotion in his eyes. Not even a trace of light.

Kilyan turned his face toward Shoyu.

—What does that matter?

Shoyu sighed in frustration.

—I applied salve to him, gave him food. It was only for a moment. I was certain he would want to try it again... but he is so cold...

Kilyan scratched his head.

—Yes, he is boring. No woman, no matter who she is, can reach his heart.

Shoyu turned away.

—I am one of the most beautiful women in our country. All my life I have heard "you are beautiful." Yet... — she did not finish the sentence.

Kilyan followed Shoyu.

—My lady, you are simply upset because he is not what you expected. That is not befitting of a princess.

Shoyu said nothing. She merely continued on her way.

As Zaber walked away from the village, he fastened his sword at his waist. He glanced for a moment at the beehive in his hand.

If I give my blood to the bees as well... would they evolve too?

Very interesting...

He continued walking through the plains, lost in these thoughts. He covered ground until sunset, yet the plains still stretched endlessly.

When darkness fell, fireflies appeared among the grass. They illuminated the surroundings like tiny lanterns.

Zaber stopped and looked at the fireflies.

This... is beautiful.

He sat down on the grass, placing the beehive beside him. Then he bit his finger. Several drops of blood fell.

Zaber whistled softly toward the beehive. He had trained them well over time—every feeding was preceded by this sound. It had become instinct for them.

The moment they heard the whistle, the six bees emerged from the hive and began circling around him with a low hum.

Zaber extended his hand.

—What do you say to having a taste? — he whispered.

One bee, as if understanding the offer, landed on his bleeding finger. It hovered briefly around it, then touched its mouth to the blood. After a moment it paused, observed Zaber—as if it liked it—and began drinking again.

Seeing this, the remaining five bees joined in. Within seconds they had consumed two or three drops.

Zaber gently shook his hand. The bees released his finger and rose into the air.

—Enough. Everything has its limit, — he said in a low voice.

Zaber lay back and gazed at the sky. Ruya and Siamond adorned the quiet firmament.

My blood enhances existing abilities... I already knew that.

But why does it not work on me?

He closed his eyes.

In the next instant he sat up abruptly. His eyes were wide open.

What if... it actually does work on me...

But my abilities were so weak that even their enhanced state is still this feeble...

This realization crushed his heart.

That means... I am the weakest among the weakest.

I possess no dragon powers.

After losing so much, I cannot even defeat five ordinary humans...

He pressed his palm to his face. Then he brushed his long black hair back with his fingers.

—No matter what happens... I will not stop, — he said quietly but firmly.

—One day I will become a truly powerful and dangerous being.

Determination flashed in his eyes.

Zaber picked up the beehive from the ground, stood, and resumed walking toward his destination.

His thoughts were still tangled.

To surrender — is the highest form of defeat.

It is convincing yourself that you are incapable of anything. My greatest enemy is despair.

I will not allow it.

He continued walking.

Zaber walked on, lost in these thoughts.

The next day the bees did not emerge from the hive. This alerted Zaber. He walked on, stopping only briefly, covering nearly two weeks of distance.

Along the way he entered a wooded area. It was not a true forest—the trees were not densely packed, so sunlight reached the ground freely. The soil was hard, uneven in places, pitted and scarred.

Zaber walked through this region until sunset. Dark circles had formed under his eyes, his clothes were covered in dust and grime. His long black hair had become slightly disheveled from the road dust.

When the sun set, he stopped at the edge to rest a little. He leaned against a tree trunk, placed his sword and beehive beside him. He stretched one leg out, bent the other, rested his hand on his knee, and closed his eyes. He was so exhausted that he could have fallen asleep in an instant if he allowed it.

But Zaber knew he was not alone.

From behind the trees came several faint spiritual vibrations. This was the sense granted to him by his soul chains.

No matter how tired he was, he fought against sleep. He wanted to relieve the exhaustion of his body, not his mind.

At that moment, several red eyes gleamed from the darkness between the trees. They slowly approached Zaber.

After a while, the light of Ruya and Siamond illuminated the gaps between the trees, and he clearly saw it was a pack of wolves.

Zaber took his sword in hand and slowly rose.

The wolves surrounded him in a circle. Low, savage growls came from their throats:

—Grrrr... grrrr...

They were preparing to attack.

Zaber’s voice was low but resolute:

—Did you come looking for prey? — he said calmly. —But do you know... today the prey is not me.

He gripped the hilt tightly and stared at the wolves.

—Today... you are my food.

The air grew tense.
