Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 55: A Comfortable Silence
Evander groaned as a warm beam of sunlight fell directly on his face. He scrunched his face in annoyance, pulling the blanket over his head to block out the light. He was not ready to wake up—not yet. But his stomach growled, betraying him.
With a frustrated sigh, he pushed the blanket aside and sat up, ruffling his already messy hair. Squinting at the clock on the bedside table with one eye open, he noted it was already 9 a.m.
"Perfect," he muttered to himself.
Unlike most mornings, Evander didn’t feel the usual rush of urgency to get to work. He had deliberately decided to take the day off. After working late into the night until 4 a.m., he deserved a break—a full day to rest and do absolutely nothing.
He dragged himself out of bed and into the bathroom for a quick shower. The cool water revived him just enough to feel somewhat human again. Afterward, he slipped into a casual white button-up shirt and dark sweatpants, his hair damp and slightly disheveled. As he stepped out of the walk-in closet, his eyes naturally drifted toward the bed.
A soft smile tugged at his lips as he imagined Delphinia lying there. It had been a few nights since they started sharing the bed, and although she always grumbled about it, she hadn’t outright refused. Thinking about her, tucked under the blankets with her cheeks rosy from sleep made him oddly happy.
He walked to the bedside table and opened the drawer. Inside sat a small, black velvet ring box. His fingers hovered over it for a moment before he picked it up and flipped it open.
The diamond ring inside sparkled under the morning light, a silent reminder of the unusual start to their relationship. Delphinia had returned it to him, but he had kept it anyway. Holding the ring, Evander’s mind wandered to his brother’s question from days ago: Why did you marry her?
A small, secretive smile curved his lips. He snapped the box shut and returned it to the drawer.
Shaking off his thoughts, Evander stood, stretching his arms briefly before heading downstairs.
In the living room, he spotted Delphinia sitting on the couch, her legs tucked underneath her, engrossed in a book. Her eyebrows drew together in focus as she lightly nibbled on her bottom lip.
Evander paused at the bottom of the stairs, watching her for a moment. She was so focused she didn’t even notice him. A corner of his mouth lifted in amusement, but his stomach growled again, reminding him of his priority.
He headed to the kitchen, grabbing a quick breakfast—a slice of toast and a cup of black coffee. Feeling a bit more full, he returned to the living room.
Delphinia was still lost in her book, her eyes darting across the pages as though she were absorbing every word. Without hesitation, Evander threw himself onto the couch beside her, collapsing into the space so close that their shoulders touched.
"Ah!" Delphinia gasped, her book slipping from her hands as she turned to him in surprise. "What are you doing? You scared me!"
Evander smirked, leaning back casually. "Couldn’t help it. You were so drawn into your book, I felt left out."
Delphinia scowled at him, her cheeks tinged pink. "Maybe I wouldn’t be so drawn in if you didn’t sneak up on me like that." She reached down to pick up her book but froze as Evander grabbed the TV remote and turned it on.
Scrolling aimlessly through the channels, he felt his frustration grow. "Nothing good," he muttered, turning off the TV and tossing the remote with a sigh.
Delphinia studied him carefully. There was something different about him today. "You look tired," she said gently.
He looked her way, his smile barely there. "I am. Worked until 4 a.m. last night."
Her brows furrowed, concern flickering in her eyes. "You should be resting, then. Not throwing yourself around like this."
"That’s why I stay home," he replied, leaning back with a dramatic sigh.
Before she could respond, Evander suddenly shifted. He lay down across the couch, resting his head on her lap.
"Ah!" Delphinia gasped, freezing as her eyes widened in shock. "W-What are you doing?"
Evander closed his eyes, a satisfied smile playing on his lips. "Getting comfortable."
Her cheeks burned a deep shade of red as she stammered, "If you wanted to lie down, you could’ve just asked! I could’ve moved!"
"But your lap is more comfortable," he said without opening his eyes. "Now, read me something."
Delphinia blinked, completely thrown off by his casual request. "What?"
"You’re reading anyway," he said, gesturing lazily toward her book. "Just read out loud. Anything will do."
She stared at him for a moment, her mind racing. "Fine," she muttered, picking up her book again. She flipped through the pages, finding where she had left off. Clearing her throat, she began to read.
She started off quietly, but grew more confident as she read the cheerful fairytale she’d randomly selected.
Evander chuckled softly as he realized what it was. "A fairytale?" he teased, cracking one eye open to look at her.
"It’s what I’m reading," she said defensively, refusing to meet his gaze.
"Go on, then," he said, closing his eye again, a smirk tugging at his lips.
As she kept reading, Evander shifted slightly, letting his head sink more comfortably into her lap. Her warmth and her voice were strangely soothing.
Delphinia kept her eyes on the book, trying to ignore how close he was, how his dark hair brushed against her hands resting on her lap. Her cheeks were still flushed, but she forced herself to focus on the words in front of her.
Line by line, her voice filled the quiet room. Evander listened, his smirk softening into a genuine smile. His eyelids grew heavier with each passing moment, her voice lulling him into a calm he hadn’t felt in a long time.
He fought to keep his eyes open, unwilling to miss her beautiful voice. But the comfort of her presence, combined with his exhaustion, was too much to resist. Gradually, his chest rose and fell more slowly, and before long, he was sound asleep.
