Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 56: The Lap Dilemma
Delphinia didn’t know how long she had been reading. Her voice was hoarse, her throat dry, and the words on the page seemed to blur together. She stopped reading, swallowing against the growing scratchiness in her throat. A sigh escaped her lips as she gently closed the book.
When she glanced down, she was greeted by the sight of Evander, sound asleep on her lap. His head was tilted slightly to one side, his dark lashes fanning over his cheekbones, and he looked so calm it made her chest tighten.
"How does someone like him look so innocent?" she muttered under her breath.
Delphinia placed the book to the side, her fingers lingering on its cover as she debated what to do next. Should she wake him up? She could really use a drink right now—her throat felt like sandpaper—but the thought of disturbing him made her hesitate.
Her gaze lingered on the faint dark circles beneath his eyes—clear proof of how tired he was. She knew he hadn’t come to their bedroom until late. She’d woken up several times during the night, glancing at the empty space between them on the bed.
"Poor guy," she thought, her gaze softening. Hesitating for a moment, she tucked a loose strand of hair away from his face. His skin was warm under her fingertips, and she pulled her hand back quickly, as if she had touched something forbidden.
"Maybe he’ll wake up in five or ten minutes," she whispered, convincing herself it wasn’t so bad to let him rest a little longer.
But oh, how wrong she was.
Forty-five minutes passed. Delphinia had tried everything to distract herself—counting the patterns on the rug, staring at the ceiling—but her patience had worn thin. Her legs were starting to cramp, a dull ache spreading through her thighs.
"Enough is enough," she muttered, her expression firming with resolve. She tapped Evander’s cheek lightly, her fingers brushing against the rough stubble on his jaw.
"Evander," she called softly.
A faint groan escaped his lips, his brows furrowing as he stirred. Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, squinting against the light. He blinked a few times, his gaze unfocused before landing on her face.
"Delphinia?" he mumbled, his voice still thick with sleep.
"You should move to the bed," she said gently. "It’ll be much more comfortable."
Evander sat up slightly, rubbing at his eyes. "Did I fall asleep?"
Delphinia nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah, for almost an hour."
"An hour?" He blinked, his gaze sharpening as he sat up straighter.
"Well, forty-five minutes," she corrected, tilting her head.
Evander nodded slowly, processing her words, but instead of moving, he simply leaned back against her lap with a content sigh.
"Evander," she said, her tone carrying a hint of frustration.
"What?" he asked innocently, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Can you get up? I can’t feel my legs anymore," she said, half amused, half irritated.
Hearing that, Evander groaned dramatically, finally sitting up. "Fine," he said, stretching his arms above his head. She got up slowly, grimacing at the tingling in her legs, and stretched to shake it off.
"Where are you going?"
"To get some water," Delphinia replied. She rolled her eyes and added, "I feel like I’m about to lose my voice after reading to a big baby who begged for a naptime story."
Evander chuckled, following her as she made her way to the kitchen. "A big baby, huh?"
"That’s right," she shot back, throwing a glance over her shoulder.
In the kitchen, Delphinia grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water. She lifted the glass to her lips, taking a long sip.
As she drank, she glanced at Evander, who leaned casually against the counter, watching her with a lazy smile. His arms were crossed, his posture relaxed, but his gaze was intent, almost teasing.
When she finished, she lowered the glass and asked, "Do you want some?"
Instead of answering, Evander stepped closer, casually taking the glass from her hands. Without breaking eye contact, he raised it to his lips and drank.
Delphinia stared at him, her mouth slightly agape. "Did you just—" she started, but the words caught in her throat. She muttered under her breath, "Indirect kiss."
His drink froze halfway to his lips, his brows arching in surprise. A grin spread across his face as he lowered the glass. "What was that?"
"Nothing!" Delphinia said quickly, her cheeks turning pink. "I didn’t say anything. You’re imagining things."
"Oh, really?" he asked, his grin widening.
She looked away, crossing her arms over her chest. "Yes, really."
Evander set the glass down on the counter, taking a step closer to her. "You know," he said, "if you wanted it to be direct, all you had to do was ask."
Her mind went blank, and she stammered. "Huh?"
He moved in closer, the gap between them almost gone. "I’ll take that silence as a yes."
Before she could process his words, he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. It was a soft kiss at first, gentle and warm, stealing the air from her lungs.
Delphinia’s eyes widened, her heart pounding in her chest. She froze for a moment, her mind racing, but as the warmth of his lips sank in, she found herself relaxing. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Evander deepened the kiss slightly, his hand coming up to cup her cheek. His touch was warm, grounding, and his thumb brushed lightly against her skin.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes searched hers, a playful smile curving his lips. "Now that," he said, his voice soft, "was direct."
Delphinia stared at him, her cheeks burning. "You—"
But she couldn’t find the words. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, and all she could do was stare at him.
Evander chuckled, stepping back and grabbing the glass of water again. "You looked thirsty," he teased, taking another sip.
She huffed, crossing her arms and turning away, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her.
