After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 124: Despair
"Why did you smash the phone? There was money in there, wasn’t there? We could have at least found a place for our family to stay."
Florence Young immediately lunged forward to check the phone.
But Fabian Lockwood had smashed it too hard. The screen was shattered, and it wouldn’t turn on at all.
Fabian Lockwood frowned. "Dad, Mom, you try calling your friends, too. I refuse to believe not a single one of them is loyal."
Lord Lockwood said, "I dropped my phone earlier."
Florence Young said, "My phone’s gone, too."
Fabian Lockwood was speechless.
After all that trouble, they were exhausted and starving. With no other choice, they went to the nearest park, hoping to make do for the night.
But while the park benches were public, they were prime territory for the homeless. As newcomers, the three of them stood no chance of claiming one.
They were then driven out onto the street, where they fell asleep leaning against a stone bollard.
「The next day.」
CLINK-CLANK.
Fabian Lockwood opened his eyes to see two small, round objects land in front of him.
It took Fabian a long moment to realize they were two one-dollar coins.
For a rich young master who’d been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, the denomination was unexpectedly small.
The young woman standing before him saw Fabian staring and assumed he was deeply moved.
She smiled and said, "Take this and buy a couple of plain buns. It’ll tide you over."
With that, the young woman walked away in her high heels.
As the morning crowd grew, more and more people came by to offer charity.
Someone gave them a scallion pancake with egg, another gave them soy milk.aragraphStaring at the growing pile of food before them, Fabian’s family finally understood.
"Are they treating us like beggars?"
"I am the great Lord Lockwood! I’ve been pampered and privileged since birth. Do I need charity from these paupers?"
Florence Young went a step further, grabbing the food and throwing it at the passersby. "Get lost! Who are you trying to insult with this garbage!"
Florence’s tantrum successfully drove everyone away, and all the food those kind people had given them was now ruined.
Having spent all that energy, she was even hungrier than before.
But all the food was gone.
Lord Lockwood, unbearably hungry, immediately pointed at his wife and yelled, "Are you crazy? You threw everything away! What are we supposed to eat now?"
After a full day and night of this, Florence’s patience had also reached its limit. "Why are you yelling at me? Why didn’t you stop me when I was throwing it away? Or were you actually planning to eat that trash?"aragraphHe was.
In Lord Lockwood’s eyes, these one- or two-dollar buns were indeed lower than trash. But he was starving now, and even such garbage had become a supreme delicacy.
Fabian didn’t join his parents’ bickering. Instead, he put on a smile and stopped a young woman passing by.
"Excuse me, miss. Could you please help me buy something to eat? Breakfast from The Savoria would be fine. I’m the second young master of the Lockwood family. If you help me this one time, I’ll repay you in the future."
The young woman he’d stopped couldn’t help but curse, "Are you nuts? A stinking beggar wants to eat at The Savoria? Are you still dreaming in broad daylight?!"
She gave him a huge eye-roll and walked off, complaining to her companion as she went, "The nerve of some people! He wants to eat at The Savoria? I wouldn’t even dare to be that extravagant on my own birthday."
Fabian refused to give up and kept stopping passersby, but without exception, he was only met with insults.
Finally, rush hour ended, and the number of pedestrians on the street dwindled.
Having gotten nothing, Fabian returned to the side of the road.
He leaned against the stone bollard, enduring the gnawing hunger in his stomach. In a daze, he felt that this moment was even more desperate than when he had faced the White Tiger the day before.
Eliza Sutton had stayed at the old manor last night.
Mainly because she had finished her work late, and Emmett was clinging to her, so she stayed over.
Eliza woke up early, mostly because she was worried about Emmett’s condition. His injuries from yesterday were severe.
"Mommy."
When Emmett Lockwood saw Eliza arrive, a smile appeared on his face. He reached out to her, the smile on his little face a bit weak.
Eliza placed her hand on Emmett’s little head. "You have a fever."
Although his wounds had been treated promptly yesterday, they were severe, and given Emmett’s young age, he had developed a fever.
"Mhm, Mr. Shepherd already came to see me. He said a fever is normal and not to worry too much."
"I know it’s normal, but I can’t help it," Eliza said earnestly. "Because I love you, Emmett. When I see you in pain, I get so worried I wish I could take your place."
Emmett shook his little head vigorously. "I’d rather be the one with the fever. I couldn’t bear for Mommy to suffer for me." He looked up, his little head tilted, and said seriously, "My mommy should always be beautiful, my most adorable princess."
Eliza couldn’t help but clutch her chest.
’Who could understand?’
’She was truly captivated by Emmett. How could there be such an adorable child in this world?’
She hugged Emmett and said, "Emmett, if magic existed in this world, I would do everything in my power to learn it."
’Then I could make you tiny, put you in my pocket, and take you away with me, so we would never have to be apart.’
"Then I want to learn it too." Emmett rested his little head on Eliza’s lap, his entire being, down to every single strand of his hair, radiating affection.
Mrs. Lockwood saw this scene when she came in.
She had always known that Eliza and Emmett had a good relationship, but she never imagined they could be this close.
"Mom," Eliza said, standing up.
Emmett also sweetly called out, "Grandma."
Mrs. Lockwood said, "Good boy, Emmett. How are you feeling now?"
"It hurts a little, but just a tiny bit," Emmett said. "It’s a good thing Mommy came in time yesterday, or I might not have been able to see you today, Grandma."
Mrs. Lockwood couldn’t help but think of those photos. Her heart clenched violently, filled with terror.
’God only knew how terrified she had been yesterday when she saw the horrific sight of Emmett hanging from the rafters.’
’She had truly thought she was going to lose her precious grandson.’
Emmett was still very uncomfortable. Even after taking his medicine, he quickly grew drowsy.
Mrs. Lockwood tucked in the corners of his blanket, then left the room with Eliza.
"Eliza Sutton."
Mrs. Lockwood stopped Eliza as she was about to leave, looking up at her.
Eliza felt a little unnerved by Mrs. Lockwood’s gaze. "Mom, did I do something..."
Before Eliza could finish her sentence, Mrs. Lockwood interrupted her.
Mrs. Lockwood said, "Thank you. I’ve owed you a proper thank-you since yesterday."
"I saved Emmett because I love him. You don’t need to thank me."
Mrs. Lockwood hadn’t expected Eliza to say that. Her expression was complicated. After a moment, she said in a low voice, "I’m sorry. For kicking you out of the Lockwood family before."
"Please, don’t apologize. I know exactly why you kicked me out. It was for my own good. You were worried that Shane Lockwood wouldn’t be saved, that I, the bride for a lucky wedding, would fail, and that you would take your anger out on me. That’s why you wanted me to leave. I understand it all," Eliza said sincerely. "I’m the one who should be thanking you. Thank you."
