Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Her Children: One Dead, One Lost

Harrison Sutton couldn’t sit still any longer. "As a daughter of the Sutton family, do you really want to see us fail this badly?"

"Yes."

"Eliza Sutton!"

"Where are my two sons?" Eliza was done beating around the bush. "When you made me marry into the Lockwood family, you promised you would let me see them!"

"I only promised to keep them alive. If you want to see them, you’ll have to trade the Azure Dragon Bay project for it. Otherwise, you’ll never see them again in your life!" Harrison Sutton’s tone was resolute; it was clear he wouldn’t release them without getting what he wanted.

"Hah."

Eliza Sutton started to laugh. Her laughter grew louder and louder, as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke.

’Isn’t this the biggest joke of all?’

’To think there’s a father in this world who would scheme against his own daughter like this!’

’I bet if I dropped dead right here,’ she thought, ’my ’dear’ father would first calculate how much my corpse is worth. Maybe even arrange a ghost marriage to bring some benefit to the Sutton family.’

Harrison Sutton, furious with embarrassment, snapped, "What are you laughing at?"

"Dad, don’t mind her. This woman is just a heartless—AH!"

Amelia Sutton hadn’t even finished her sentence before she let out a shriek.

Eliza Sutton had forcefully pinned her to the sofa. With a flick of her fingers, a Silver Needle was pressed against Amelia’s pretty face.

"Eliza Sutton! What do you think you’re doing?"

"Miss Sutton, I wouldn’t move if I were you. You might get disfigured."

Mrs. Sutton was even more panicked. "Let go of Amelia! If you hurt her, I swear I won’t let you get away with it! Harrison, look at what your ’good’ daughter is doing!"

Harrison Sutton’s face darkened, his anger fueled by the challenge to his authority. "Eliza Sutton, you’re out of line! I order you to let Amelia go!"

Eliza Sutton’s expression was indifferent, her beautiful face as cold as frost. "Either you let me see my children, or I’ll ruin Amelia Sutton’s face."

"Amelia! Harrison, do something! You can’t let her hurt our daughter’s face!"

Harrison Sutton gritted his teeth and said, "Let go of Amelia, and I’ll take you to see those two little bastards!"

"Let’s have your precious darling accompany me." Eliza Sutton grabbed Amelia Sutton’s collar and hauled her up like a kitten.

A dark glint flashed in Harrison Sutton’s eyes as he led Eliza Sutton to the utility room.

A flash of fury crossed Eliza Sutton’s eyes. She had sacrificed so much for the Sutton family, and these animals had locked her children in a utility room.

Ignoring Amelia Sutton, Eliza violently shoved the door open.

In the messy, cluttered utility room, a small, frail boy was huddled in a corner. He trembled in fear at the sound of the door opening. He watched them cautiously, his dark eyes filled with defensiveness and alarm.

Eliza Sutton’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart felt as if it had been squeezed viciously, and tears instantly streamed down her face. She crouched down, extending a hand toward the little boy, her voice trembling. "Sweetheart, it’s Mommy. Come here to me."

The little boy didn’t move. His small body trembled even more violently, like a frightened little animal.

"Sweetheart, don’t be afraid. Mommy won’t hurt you." Eliza Sutton took another step forward.

She was being as careful as she could, but the child was still startled. He screamed, flailing his small arms in protest. His ill-fitting clothes rode up, revealing most of his back.

Eliza Sutton’s gaze froze, and her expression changed abruptly. She lunged forward and grabbed the little boy’s hand.

Terrified, the little boy bit down hard on Eliza Sutton’s arm, but she seemed not to feel the pain. She raised her hand and abruptly lifted the back of his shirt.

The bony back was covered in scars, both old and new. Eliza Sutton cried out, "This isn’t my child!"

Harrison Sutton’s heart skipped a beat. He barked in a low voice, "What do you mean he’s not your child? Eliza Sutton, what are you trying to pull now?"

"Both of my children have a red, hawk-shaped birthmark on their backs. This child doesn’t!"

Harrison Sutton had never paid attention to whether the bastards Eliza Sutton gave birth to back then had any birthmarks. "Maybe you’re misremembering."

"Absolutely not!"

Eliza Sutton was already in prison when she gave birth. She knew her children wouldn’t be able to live with her, so despite being utterly exhausted after labor, she forced her eyes open to look at them.

They were a pair of beautiful twin boys. The older brother’s birthmark was on the left side of his waist, and the younger brother’s was on the right.

"Dad, just tell my sister the truth. One of her two children died right after coming back to the Sutton family, and the other got lost when he was two. He’s probably a little beggar on the streets by now, maybe even begging on some roadside!" Amelia Sutton, still resentful that Eliza had hurt her, felt a deep sense of satisfaction seeing Eliza’s devastated reaction.

"You’re asking to die!" Eliza Sutton could no longer hold back. She grabbed Amelia Sutton’s shoulders, slammed her hard against the wall, and mercilessly jabbed the Silver Needle into a pressure point on her shoulder.

Amelia Sutton felt half of her body go numb. She shrieked in terror, "Mom, save me! The pain is killing me!"

’This Eliza Sutton is insane!’

Mrs. Sutton’s eyes were wide with fury. She grabbed a nearby vase and hurled it viciously at Eliza Sutton.

Eliza Sutton kicked backward, knocking Mrs. Sutton to the ground.

Watching the chaos unfold, Harrison Sutton flew into a rage. "This is mutiny! Does Eliza Sutton even see me as her father anymore!"

"I want to see my children!"

"One of the two bastards is dead, and the other is lost! You’ll never see them in this lifetime!" Harrison Sutton dropped the pretense, his eyes filled with malice. "Eliza Sutton, are you causing all this trouble without any regard for your mother? I’m the one who paid for her burial plot! If you keep this up, I’ll have her dug up and thrown into the street!"

Eliza Sutton froze. She slowly turned her head to look at him.

"You promised you would take care of my children."

Eliza Sutton spoke very slowly, her voice trembling with profound despair.

Harrison Sutton said with righteous indignation, "It’s those two bastards who were unlucky. What could I do?"

"I was a fool to believe you would take care of my children," Eliza Sutton murmured. A sharp pain surged up from the depths of her heart, and a metallic, sweet taste filled her throat.

She opened her mouth and coughed up a mouthful of blood.

Her body swayed, and she had to lean against the wall to keep from collapsing. Her mind went completely blank.

For the past five years, the only thing that had kept her struggling to survive in that sunless prison was the belief that she would one day be reunited with her children.

Now, all of that was gone.

Seeing Eliza Sutton’s deathly pale face, Harrison Sutton felt a pang of guilt.

He patted her shoulder. "Eliza, you’re still young. You can have more children in the future. Just forget about those two bastards."

SLAP—

Eliza Sutton slapped Harrison Sutton’s hand away. Her dark eyes stared at him as she said, enunciating each word, "They are not bastards. They are my beloved babies!"

Eliza Sutton took a deep breath, her tone final. "From this day forward, Eliza Sutton cuts all ties with the Sutton family!"

After saying this, she stumbled out of the Sutton residence.

After leaving the Sutton home, she went to the cemetery. A light rain had begun to fall.

Eliza Sutton stood before a tombstone, quietly looking at the photograph on it.

In the photo on the tombstone, her mother was smiling brilliantly.

After a long while, Eliza Sutton placed two pinwheels in front of the tombstone. A gust of wind blew past, making the pinwheels spin with a WHIRRING sound.

Without looking back, Eliza Sutton walked step by step down the hill.

With every step, her resolve hardened. No matter where he was, to the ends of the earth, she would find her child!

「In the taxi.」

The driver kept glancing at her through the rearview mirror. "Why come to the cemetery in this kind of weather?"

"I was missing my family," Eliza Sutton said as she took out her phone and sent a text message.

"Immediately seize all projects the Sutton Group is currently negotiating! At any cost!"

The driver’s eyes filled with sympathy. "Young lady," he said, "no matter what happened, you have to take care of yourself, you hear?"

Eliza Sutton agreed in a soft voice.

’Of course I’ll take care of myself,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, how could I watch that pack of wolves in the Sutton family get their just deserts!’
