After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 103: He Hasn’t Figured Out His Own Heart
Henry Preston took me directly back to Maplewood Gardens. He had let all the house staff go home for the New Year, not a single one stayed.
I was a bit puzzled, "Couldn’t you leave one behind and give them a raise? It’s good to have someone clean and cook."
"There’s no one here; why keep them?" Henry sat me down on the sofa and then crouched down, wanting to take off my shoes to check my sprain.
I wasn’t used to him being so kind to me, so I pulled my foot back, "You get me the medicine kit, I can do it myself."
But Henry replied lightly, "I’ve seen and touched every part of you, what’s awkward about checking a foot injury?"
I was speechless for a few seconds, then retorted, "It’s not that I’m shy; I just don’t need you to be so nice to me."
"Why?" Henry looked up, staring straight at me.
"You ask why?" I responded, "Henry, you just sent Azure Vaughn home and then came back to find me. Don’t you think it’s kind of fickle?"
Last night, he should have been in City C, and at the earliest, he returned to City A this morning.
The moment he returned, he went to find Azure, acting as her knight escorting her home.
Thinking back, every year on New Year’s Day, he’d only return to City A after I prompted him, coming to my house to celebrate and have a meal.
The priorities are clear.
Henry frowned, "Didn’t I say I would find a way to handle Azure?"
"How will you handle it? Find a suitable place to hide her away, keep a steady relationship at home while having flings outside, or completely sever ties with her, never contacting her again?" I pressed on.
"..." Henry looked at me silently.
I knew it, he still hasn’t figured it out. Azure is too different for him, and I’ve started to become different as well. He hasn’t confirmed where his heart truly lies.
"Forget it, talking to you could give me a heart attack." I stood up, limping as I went to get the medicine kit myself.
Henry, however, carried me back to sit down, then silently fetched the kit and handed it to me.
I took off my shoe and sock; my left ankle had swelled up. I rubbed some medicinal oil on it and then applied a piece of gauze.
Henry watched the whole time, showing no intention of helping.
"Take me to The Dawson Family." After putting my shoes back on, I said to Henry.
"No." Henry refused decisively.
"You must!" I insisted, "If you hadn’t shown up and caused trouble, I wouldn’t be hurt. I should already be at The Dawsons by now; you need to take responsibility!"
Henry gave a cold laugh, "And I’m responsible for taking you to another man’s house?"
I glared, "That is also my good friend Crystal Dawson’s house. Henry, your jealousy is really misplaced!"
"Didn’t Dylan Dawson pursue you before?" Henry ignored my words and instead sat down, "Now that he knows we’re having a divorce, is he trying to take advantage of the situation?"
"Why, you can have admirers but I’m not allowed a little romance?" I snapped back, irritated, and then took out my phone to call Crystal Dawson.
Since Henry wouldn’t take me, I’d ask Crystal to pick me up. Being alone with him was less appealing than heading to The Dawsons to figure things out.
Once the call connected, I asked, "Crystal, do you have time? Can you come to Maplewood Gardens to pick me up?"
"Okay, wait a bit!" Crystal agreed loyally.
After hanging up, Henry’s face turned extremely unpleasant, "Being here with me is that unbearable?"
I looked around, "Yes, it reminds me of a few years ago. I was here waiting for you, during the big New Year event. After eating at home, I came back with you, while everyone else visited family and friends for New Year’s, I stayed home like some lonely widow. Do you think I felt good then?"
Henry’s expression was momentarily stunned, then he fell silent for a few seconds and said, "I never asked you to wait for me at home."
"But you knew I would wait for you!" My emotions stirred again, "Don’t you know how much I liked you? You just used my feelings to punish me."
"Also, I had no idea about Winter Tate. I always thought you didn’t have anyone you truly cared about, so I foolishly rushed to marry you, thinking over time you’d see my heart and gradually fall in love with me. If I knew what happened that day, I would have left."
After saying this, I noticed my eyes had become a little wet, and my voice was filled with grievance.
This wasn’t how I should feel—it made me seem weak.
So I stood up, even though my left foot could barely touch the ground, I tried to maintain a proud stance, "Henry, for the past five years, I’ve been your emotional punching bag. But I accepted it, as self-punishment for loving you. But from now on, treat Azure well, don’t waver anymore."
The living room fell into a long silence until Crystal’s car honked outside the gate.
She texted me: Come out, I’m here.
I grabbed my phone and hobbled out; Henry didn’t stop me.
"Is Henry inside?" Crystal asked once I got into the car, looking at the half-opened door.
"Yes." I was freezing, and I wasn’t wearing Henry’s coat anymore. My clothes were quite thin.
"My brother said he took you away; that jerk, I curse he have a kid with no butthole!" Crystal cursed.
For some reason, my eyelid twitched.
The car drove off quickly and soon arrived at The Dawson Family home. Fortunately, Crystal’s parents were out visiting for New Year, and Stella Dawson was married and not at her parents’ house for the holiday.
So right now, it was just me, Crystal, and Dylan Dawson at The Dawsons.
Seeing me, Dylan quickly came over to support me, "Is your ankle seriously sprained? Have you applied any medicine? Do you need to go to the hospital?"
"Not serious, just a bit swollen." I was helped to the sofa, and Crystal poured hot tea, setting out candies and snacks to entertain me.
"Sorry, it wasn’t intentional." Dylan said, feeling guilty.
"I didn’t even see who pushed me, how is it your fault? Dylan, don’t be so tense, it’s not like my leg is broken." I smiled.
Crystal chuckled mischievously, "Everyone knows my brother’s intentions, it’s plain to see!"
I gave her a sideways look, and she pretended not to see.
Dylan was long used to his sister’s antics and was amused by them, just smiling and then asking, "What do you want to eat? I’ll make lunch."
It’s already two in the afternoon, and we hadn’t had lunch yet.
Crystal unceremoniously named two dishes, and I went with whatever.
Then Crystal’s big mouth went on again, "Oh Zoe, don’t worry, my brother remembers what you like to eat. I guarantee that everything will be your favorite!"
Dylan had already gone to the kitchen, probably didn’t hear, so I furiously covered Crystal’s mouth, "Don’t force me to commit a felony during New Year!"
"Mmmm..." Crystal mumbled something.
After I released her, she quipped, "How can you murder your future sister-in-law?!"
