Chapter 108: Chapter 108: The Cause of the Car Accident

I was silent for a moment. Wasn’t that the night of the second day of the New Year when Henry came to the apartment to find me, then left after getting a call?

Turns out Azure got into a car accident. That was indeed urgent, no wonder he was in such a rush, and I didn’t see him again for the next few days.

But shouldn’t Ivan have known about this? Why didn’t he tell me in the following days?

Thinking about it like this, I realized I was a bit self-centered, taking for granted that Ivan would be my eyes and ears.

My fingers tapped on the screen: Yeah, I got it, but now these matters have nothing to do with me.

Crystal Dawson sent over a thumbs-up emoji.

I put down my phone, closed my eyes to hypnotize myself, and reminded myself that the next morning I had to report to work at the company. I didn’t want to waste any more time on other things.

Tired in both body and mind, I fell into a deep sleep, only waking up groggily when the alarm rang.

On my first day at work, I couldn’t be late, so I got up, freshened up, and went to the company with Sherman Hathaway.

I was assigned to the development department. Sherman told me that because it was a branch company, everything was still in the starting phase, so the development department was very important and a place where you could learn a lot, responsible for developing new channels and promotions.

I had no objections. As a newbie in the workplace, the most important thing is to be diligent and eager to learn, and I decided to learn well.

Three days later, Sherman arranged an apartment for me, close to the company. After running around and finding a moving company, he finally breathed a sigh of relief, "Finally got you settled. Eight calls a day from your uncle, asking if I’ve taken good care of you. I was scared to death."

"Tsk, good brother, I’ll treat you to a meal when I get my salary." I grinned, "And bring your wife and Little White, not one less."

Little White is Sherman’s son, my nephew, only two years old, very cute and fair.

Sherman nodded in satisfaction, "Hmm, sounds good. You’ve grown up and become sensible."

"I’m only half a year younger than you, right?" I rolled my eyes.

"Still younger!" Sherman suddenly sighed, "Look at me, my son is already two years old. And you? You’ve chased Henry for so long, finally married him, and it ended like this. Was it worth it?"

My chest tightened, "Don’t bring up what’s better left unsaid, are you trying to piss me off?"

Sherman knocked on my head, "I’m just thinking it’s not worth it for you! The best years of a girl’s youth, you dedicated to a man who doesn’t love you. Even if you get divorced, you’ll carry the label of a second marriage, paying for your own foolishness!"

"Men who mind that I’m remarried, I wouldn’t even consider." I snorted.

"That’s true. Don’t worry, brother knows lots of promising young men. I’ll introduce you to them when the time comes!" Sherman smiled benevolently.

Sherman and I chatted for a bit. As it was getting dark, he was eager to go home for dinner. I didn’t go with him, instead, I boiled a pack of instant noodles at my new place to fill my stomach.

In this unfamiliar country, unfamiliar city, with unfamiliar air, I really felt a bit homesick.

To dispel the feeling of loneliness, I started a group video call.

To my relief, the three girls all joined.

Leah Lane was lying on the sofa munching on chicken feet, asking between bites, "Zoe, have you gotten used to things over there?"

Tiana O’Connell had already started working, with the new year beginning with overtime, her head buried in her desk, almost face to face with the pile of documents, her voice somewhat muffled, "Don’t worry, Xylos is mostly Chinese, just lots of fellow citizens from different nationalities."

I sighed, "Fellow citizens all speaking English when they meet."

"So what, as if you can’t speak it." Crystal Dawson was in pajamas with a face mask on, her face so white it looked ghostly, "Zoe, my brother said he’s also going to return to the company in Xylos."

"No!" I almost jumped up, "You have to stop him!"

"How can I stop him? By doing a hundred-meter hurdle?" Crystal peeled off the face mask, her face still glistening, "My brother’s determination, it’s even moved me, The Siren."

Leah Lane giggled, "Zoe, don’t be so quick to refuse, I think Dylan is quite good."

Tiana O’Connell nodded vigorously despite her busy schedule.

I rubbed my forehead.

Suddenly, Crystal asked cautiously, "Zoe, if, I mean just in case, if Henry and the others find out you’ve gone abroad, will it be okay? Anyway, you’ve already left."

"You told him?" I countered.

"No, no, no, I hardly have contact with him, I accidentally leaked it to someone else, might end up reaching his ears..." Crystal replied weakly.

I was a bit annoyed at first, but then I thought, this isn’t some betrayal against the entire universe. What’s the big deal about moving abroad? Besides, even if I kept it from Henry and the others, it’s not like I could hide it for long.

So I let it go, "It’s fine, if he knows, he knows, as long as he doesn’t find out my exact location. I don’t believe he can extend his reach that far."

Crystal breathed a sigh of relief.

Sherlock Sweet suddenly appeared, "Come on, Crystal, who did you tell that it could actually reach Henry’s ears?"

It’d either be Ivan, Silas, or Jason.

But none of these three had much of a relationship with Crystal.

Crystal chuckled, "Well, we’re all in the same circle, maybe passing word around, it somehow reached Henry, anything’s possible!"

"Alright, fair point." Tiana O’Connell continued with her work.

After chatting for a while, we wrapped up the video call, and Crystal sent me a video separately.

When I answered, she told me gleefully, "Azure’s hand is going to be permanently damaged!"

"What’s going on?" I asked.

"Her left hand’s nerves are severed, the surgery didn’t go well, and her left hand fingers will be weak and not very controllable in the future," Crystal said, almost laughing.

In theory, I should be laughing too; it’s Azure’s karma. But I couldn’t laugh.

Her hand being disabled doesn’t make any difference to me; aside from a little psychological satisfaction over karma, there’s no practical benefit.

I asked, "Do you know how she got into the car accident?"

"Oh, you asked the right person, I do know!" Crystal said, "I heard her mom set her up with a matchmaking date, under the pretense of New Year visits, someone came to see her at her house. When Azure figured out who it was, she got upset, and as soon as they left, she had a heated argument with her parents, then ran out and got into the accident."

Laura Lawson arranging a match for Azure... that’s really something.

Azure now only has eyes for Henry, she wouldn’t accept a matchmaking set up by her family. No matter how beautiful she is, in her daily life she can’t reach men of Henry’s caliber.

She’s not brainless; anyone with half a brain would know that capturing Henry’s heart is the most important thing.
