After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 136: Competing for the Last Fried Chicken
I proactively sent a video request, and Joel Sutton accepted it quickly.
It had only been a few months since we’d last met, but that sunny big boy seemed to have matured a bit. His hair was cropped short, and he was wearing a gray jacket that looked a bit dirty.
He touched his hair, somewhat embarrassed, "Miss Hathaway, I just got back from work, and my clothes are a bit dirty. Since I’m interning, I’m at the construction site all day, living and eating with a bunch of rough guys. I hope you don’t mind."
"What’s there to mind?" I hastily said, "The short hair looks quite handsome, clean and neat."
"I think so too. Mainly, long hair is inconvenient for work," Joel Sutton chuckled, "When I first arrived, everyone said my style was so trendy it gave them rheumatism."
I burst into laughter at his words. After chatting a bit, he asked, "Miss Hathaway, when are you returning home? I’ve sent some of my salary back home, but I’ve kept some so I can treat you to dinner, or perhaps buy you a small gift. I can’t afford anything expensive for now."
"No, you should save your money for yourself. You’ll need it for your family in the future or when you get married. In short, don’t spend it recklessly." I felt touched and a bit guilty.
"I save a part of my salary every month, don’t worry. It’s just that the intern salary isn’t high," Joel Sutton explained.
"Which company are you working at?" I asked.
"A small real estate company. I’m currently working at a construction site, planning to gradually climb up the ladder," Joel Sutton replied casually.
He’s always been optimistic, full of hope for the future. I really admire his mindset.
If I return home soon, it’ll only be for the Qingming Festival, which is almost here.
So I agreed with Joel Sutton to have a meal together once I return and discuss the matter with Azure Vaughn in person.
Joel Sutton was thrilled, his tone full of excitement, "Great, great! I’ll wait for you!"
"Okay, see you in a couple of days," I replied softly.
After hanging up, I headed out again to get some fresh air as I had slept too much during the day and couldn’t fall asleep now.
Enemies are always bound to cross paths. As soon as I descended the stairs, I saw Azure Vaughn and Joy Lawson. As soon as they saw me, their expressions instantly turned cloudy.
Joy Lawson is a venomous and malicious person. It’s like her mouth is a broken floodgate, unable to stop spouting sludge.
"Azure, had we known Mr. Preston wasn’t home, we wouldn’t have come. To make a trip and bring bad luck, what a bummer!"
Azure Vaughn looked at me with a slightly cold gaze.
We’d already laid our cards on the table earlier. Her pretending in front of me was unnecessary, so her gaze and expression finally bore the cold hostility of adversaries.
"Joy Lawson, right?" I stepped in front of them, smiling subtly, "If you keep running your mouth, I wonder if it might end up harming your friend Azure?"
"What are you talking about?" Joy Lawson retorted, belligerent.
Azure Vaughn’s expression changed, understanding the implication in my words. Moreover, she didn’t really know what leverage I had over her, so she had to be cautious.
She tugged at Joy Lawson, "Joy, don’t say anymore!"
Her tone carried a sense of command and irritation.
Joy Lawson clearly had more to say to retort, but Azure Vaughn’s insistence forced her to swallow it back, glaring at me with bulging eyes.
I raised an eyebrow in satisfaction, "Smart choice."
Azure Vaughn and Joy Lawson looked angry but didn’t dare say more.
At this moment, the elevator doors opened again, and Julian Jennings walked out, "Azure, Joy, let’s go!"
Seeing me, he paused, "Miss Hathaway, why are you..."
Then his gaze darted back and forth between me and Azure Vaughn, a bit awkwardly. A friend’s ex-wife and the current partner together, it’s awkward for anyone.
Both the Sleeping Dragon and the Young Phoenix have arrived.
Azure Vaughn forced herself to stay calm, "Brother Julian, let’s go. Mr. Preston is still waiting for us."
"Alright!" Julian Jennings looked at me again, then the three of them left first.
I leisurely followed behind. After reaching my car, I drove off.
If Azure Vaughn is smart, she’d stop provoking me and I might gradually ignore everything, letting her and Henry Preston develop as they will.
But if she keeps trying to stir things up in front of me, I might just leak today’s inside information online, along with past recordings, which are enough to socially ruin her.
At that time, The Preston Family would certainly not accept a disgraced Cinderella.
I drove with the wind, the nighttime city was bustling, and the warm wind on my face was quite comfortable.
Arriving at a night market street, I parked the car, smelling the various food aromas in the air, and my cravings began to stir.
Without saying a word, I embarked on a food spree, wanting to eat anything savory, spicy, and fragrant, except for seafood.
There’s truth in the saying about sour kids and spicy moms!
After eating along the way, I finally stopped in front of a fried chicken stall. The stall was quite popular, with only the last portion of fried chicken left. I had just started to say, "Boss, this fried chicken I..."
"Boss! I want the last fried chicken!" Joy Lawson’s voice was loud and intentionally provocative.
I turned my head, and behind Joy Lawson stood Azure Vaughn, Henry Preston, Ivan Underwood, and Julian Jennings.
When Henry Preston saw it was me, his expression subtly shifted, probably puzzled as to why I hadn’t had enough to eat yet. He had sent dinner for two people earlier that evening.
"But this young lady ordered it first," the boss kindly spoke up for me, after glancing at me.
"Didn’t she not finish her sentence?" Joy Lawson replied unhappily.
"Boss, please wrap it up for me," I said softly and calmly to the boss, ignoring this group of people.
Joy Lawson suddenly turned to Henry Preston, "Mr. Preston, Azure wants to eat fried chicken. This place has the best Korean fried chicken, and there’s only one portion left. Aren’t you going to buy it for her?"
I found it bewildering. Where does Joy Lawson get the audacity to speak to Henry Preston like that?
Could it be that she thinks just because her good friend snagged a rich guy, she’s risen too?
It’s really annoying when people aren’t self-aware.
I looked at Henry Preston, and Azure Vaughn was looking at him too, with a hint of expectation in her eyes.
Although she’s crafty, her upbringing shows in certain ways. For example, right now, she’s relying on grabbing a portion of fried chicken to prove whether Henry Preston cares about her.
But it seemed like I was once naive too, obsessing over details to try to prove Henry Preston saw me differently.
Henry Preston remained unmoved, just continuing to look at me.
Ivan Underwood’s gaze was somewhat worried. I guessed he was concerned whether there was something wrong with my health since he’d caught me overeating multiple times now.
Azure Vaughn’s gaze gradually filled with disappointment and a hint of reluctance. Julian Jennings stepped in to diffuse the situation, "Let’s go have something else to eat. Joy, weren’t you the one insisting we come here? You should know where the best food is."
The fried chicken vendor had already wrapped the chicken up for me, and I walked over to Azure Vaughn, directly handing it to her.
She looked at me, somewhat bewildered.
