Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 144 Watch Your Back
Ling Xuan’s eyes met with Alexander’s. "Come with me." She ordered. Without waiting for his reply she headed directly into the commander’s office.
Alexander clicked his tongue before following after her. His eyes swept over Chris as he walked past him.
When Ling Xuan entered the room, she sat on the executive chair, her eyes fixated on the entrance door.
Not too long Alexander walked inside, his eyes softening the moment they landed on Ling Xuan’s stoic face.
"Were you behind this whole charade? Could it be this is your way wanting to take my power..." Ling Xuan’s gaze narrowed. "...or you wanted to teach me a lesson? Perhaps you wanted to remove the thorn at your side?"
Alexander tucked his hand in his pockets. He let out a deep sigh before ruffling his hair. "Will you believe me if I tell you I wanted to do all of this so I can have you all to myself? I didn’t go through with the plan because I knew it would put you in a tight spot.
I would never do anything to hurt you. Think about it, what if the Lennox are behind all of this, perhaps they wanted to create some noise using the Waynes as a wedge and pressure to their side just so Mr. Lennox could follow on your expedition?" His mouth turned bitter at the thought that Chris was going with them.
His eyes unwavering as they stared directly into Ling Xuan’s, although he felt chills running down his spine, he brushed the feeling away.
"Is that so?" Ling Xuan drawled.
"Laurel, my heart hurts at your questions. Could it be that you don’t believe my words?" He let out a frustrated sigh.
"I have been in the business world before the disaster, and the name Scarlet Beauty sends terror through every businessman. He is only trying to look good in your presence, but he is sly, manipulative, and double-faced. Not to mention his ruthlessness... promise me you will stay away from him." He said with a pleading gaze.
"The more reason to have him as a friend rather than a foe, that is if your words are true. And he will remain a friend as I’m his doctor. I can’t promise you that, besides he is worthy to work with." Ling Xuan said, taking his words with a pinch of salt.
In her past life, she had dealt with different powerful men, and Alexander was not someone she could trust. The memories from Laurel’s past life showed her enough of the man in front of her. Heartless, decisive, and vindictive.
"Hmm, if you insist," Alexander said through gritted teeth. "Laurel is there things you aren’t telling me?" He suddenly asked.
"Yes, and I don’t plan on telling you." Ling Xuan replied, her tone dead serious.
But Alexander tried to laugh it off. His face turned serious again, then he walked to her side. "I’ll do everything in my power to protect you, my wife." He said softly.
But his words made Ling Xuan frown. "You should get your things ready. As for your soldiers, teach them discipline or I won’t hesitate to kick them out of my fortress."
Alexander’s lips pressed into a thin line, though he did not argue further, because he understood that tone in Ling Xuan’s voice, he knew he was dealing with the other side of Laurel.
Whenever she spoke like that, the discussion had already reached its end regardless of whether he agreed with the conclusion or not. He straightened his posture slowly, slipping his hands back into his pockets as a faint trace of dry amusement returned to his expression, though the irritation in his eyes had not completely faded.
"Your fortress, your rules," he said calmly. "I’ll make sure my men remember it."
"Good." She replied curtly.
Her gaze had already shifted back to the documents spread across the desk as though his presence in the room had become irrelevant the moment she finished speaking.
The quiet scratching sound of the papers moving against the wooden surface filled the office as she began reviewing the reports again, her composure unshaken and her expression unreadable.
Alexander remained where he stood for a few seconds longer, watching her in silence. The calm indifference on her face irritated him far more than anger ever could, because it reminded him that no matter how carefully he played his moves, she refused to let him see what she was thinking.
After a moment he exhaled slowly through his nose, turning toward the door as though deciding there was nothing more to gain from remaining in the room.
"Get some rest," he said as he reached the entrance, glancing over his shoulder briefly before opening the door. "Tomorrow won’t be easy."
"I know," Ling Xuan replied without looking up, her attention still fixed on the papers before her.
Alexander stepped out into the corridor and closed the door behind him, only to find Chris standing a short distance away as though he had been waiting there the entire time. The moment their eyes met, the atmosphere between them became tense.
’He is still here? What a leech.’
Alexander’s gaze moved over him slowly before settling on his face with faint amusement. "You seem very determined to follow the commander on this expedition," he said casually, though the slight edge in his voice revealed that the matter was far from trivial to him.
Chris stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his expression calm and controlled as he returned the stare without hesitation. "I could say the same about you."
Alexander’s lips curved into a faint smile. "The difference," he replied slowly, "is that she’s my wife."
Alexander narrowed his eyes as if concerned. "You should be careful, with the infected roaming around, and disaster looming, it is not an ideal place for the weak. You might even lose your life before you realize it."
Chris’s expression remained indifferent. "You don’t have to worry about me, you should watch your back. The infected prefer the necks and heads."
