Chapter 145: Chapter 145 Mastermind

Alexander’s smile thinned slightly at Chris’s response, though the faint amusement never completely left his expression.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them stretching quietly along the dim corridor.

"I sure will," Alexander said, breaking the silence. He glanced at Chris before walking towards the exit door.

...

Inside the engineering sector, Raphael was pacing to and fro glancing now and then at the entrance door.

The moment the door opened, he quickly rushed forward. "Mr. Wayne, how did it go?" He asked.

Alexander’s gaze darkened at his question. "Terrible." He muttered under his breath.

"Uh? Terrible? How?" Raphael asked with a puzzled look following behind Alexander.

"The soldiers were impatient and immediately confronted Mr. Lennox." He paused. "He is more dangerous than we expected. The armory boxes were found empty."

"How is that possible? I did all the research, boss, and meticulously placed our men in their midst. The boxes should contain the armory and should definitely be in their base." Raphael said knitting his brows together.

"I don’t know how he did it, but I believe he knew about our plan and moved the empty boxes to the North district. Making the Wayne soldier look like a fool."

"As long as the weapons are still missing they will be under suspicion, and just a little more push and the people will demand their expulsion."

"It is not that easy Raphael, if he could easily detect the flaw in our plan and make a counter-attack he could have easily exposed us but he didn’t.

Either he is planning against us... or he is playing the role just so he could follow Laurel out of the fortress." His hands tightened by his side.

"He is very cunning," Raphael muttered under his breath. "I will investigate what happened in the Lennox base, then we can plan a counter-attack in case he decides to point the bullet at us."

"Do that... we are about to venture into the unknown, anything can happen," Alexander replied with a faint smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "You will remain in the fortress while I’m gone."

Understanding the meaning behind his words, Raphael lowered his head. "Yes, Mr. Wayne."

...

Chris strolled along the fortress wall. Dylan was standing close to the tower, the moment he saw him, he quickly lowered his head.

"Mr. Lennox, they have gone too far, I say we give them a taste of their own medicine," Dylan said coldly, his eyes narrowing with agitation.

"We will, but not now." He mused, a dangerous flashing through his eyes. "Let them think they have the upper hand.

You have spooked them by placing the boxes in the north district; now, they are aware that we know about their orchestration. So impatient." Chris clicked his tongue.

"But at least it serves a purpose, I could go outside with Laurel." He said with a faint smile.

Dylan sighed, unable to understand what was going through his friend’s mind. "What do we do with the spies and the weapons?" He asked in a whisper.

"As for the spies, keep an eye on them but don’t spook them yet, let them think they are still in control. As for the armory, place them in the safest place, I’ll decide what to do with them when I return back." Chris said, staring at the vast land that had now been reduced to ashes and coal.

If he had not placed hidden security which consisted of only his elite force around the fortress, they would have been framed. If they had checked their base and the weapons were found, he would have lost Laurel’s trust.

The red mist had disappeared and the sky which was once covered in red was now a clear blue sky. The sun had finally decided to smile upon the earth once again.

"Are you planning on going alone?" Dylan stepped forward. "I can’t let you do that."

"You are the only person I trust, and the only one who knows what to do in times of crisis. If you go with me in the name of protecting me, the soldiers within these walls will be like wolves with no leader. This is not a discussion, I can take good care of myself."

Dylan’s eyes narrowed as he stared at Chris. He wanted to argue with him, the thought of letting him go out into the dangerous world was his worst fear. What if something happened to him and he was not there to protect? His fists clenched tightly by his side.

But he also knew there was nothing he could say to change his mind. "I understand." He said with a defeated sigh.

"Ling Xuan, you shouldn’t have agreed to Chris’s request," Laurel said, dropping into the couch in the space house.

"His request was reasonable, I had to agree." Ling Xuan replied boredly.

Laurel let out a deep sigh. She never expected this much friction could happen between them so soon.

"This is exactly why I brought Enzo and his men. Imagine if we didn’t have a force of our own. We wouldn’t have been able to control them." Ling Xuan added.

"You were right, we can’t totally rely on them." She let out another sigh. "Now the expedition is shifted again. We only have two to three weeks left to find the Snow Lotus, we can’t afford to delay it anymore, else we might get trapped in the great hunt or worse we lose everything we had painstakingly built."

Ling Xuan glanced at her. "It is smart to see how the people react until tomorrow, if there is any unrest we need to curb it before we leave. If the situation wasn’t dire, now is not the time to leave the fortress. We might come back to meet chaos and change in order."

Laurel’s brows knitted into a frown. "Let’s hope the people aren’t panicking." She leaned her back on the couch staring at the ceiling. "Time is not on our side."
