Chapter 105: Coerce

Three days had passed since the robbery in unit 1401 happened. According to Xander, the wealthy elderly residents had been tortured beyond recognition.

Upon learning of the horrific events, the residents quickly alerted the police, but all they received was a busy tone.

Desperate, they called the hospital, only to be met with the same frustrating response. By the second day, the elderly residents had succumbed to their injuries.

With no other options for the bodies and a growing dread that they would rot and emit a foul stench, the residents made a grim decision to dispose them from the balcony.

They tossed the lifeless bodies over the edge, and the surging water swept them away.

Now, a heavy sense of wariness settled over the residents, for they had no idea who was behind these atrocities.

They realized that while the typhoon was terrifying, human behavior was even more frightening. When the authorities are unable to restrain criminals, the world descends into lawlessness.

Back to the present, the water level rose to the fourth floor, forcing the residents to evacuate to higher ground.

Some even began to fight over unit 1401, seemingly indifferent to the fact that someone had died there just a while ago.

They desperately needed a safe place to shelter from the raging typhoon and the unknown criminals lurking around.

The thugs were thrilled that no one was investigating, and the authorities were too preoccupied with the typhoon.

They felt liberated from the laws that had once shackled them and were now plotting their next target.

"Manager, it’s been five days of nonstop rain. Do you think something is wrong?" a thug asked, sipping his favorite alcohol.

"According to my friends, this typhoon is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Their intel suggests it’s a global disaster. What do you think, manager? Should we try to take control of this building?" Another thug added, looking forward to the manager’s decision.

The manager pondered deeply; if the disaster were true, as they described, then seizing this building for themselves would be the best choice.

The thought of becoming the leader, while the residents looked at him in dismay, brought a smirk to his face.

He would make them his slaves and bully the beautiful woman among them.

’Isn’t this the best revenge for these arrogant residents?’

He glanced at his group’s eager faces and said, "If we take control of this building, which residents should we watch out for?"

"The residents here are all weak and easy to manipulate; they are disorganized. The real problem is the upper floor; they seem more cohesive. They don’t participate much and are always vigilant," the other thug analyzed, based on his observations over the past few days.

"We need to eliminate them from the equation; I’m afraid they pose the biggest threat," the red-haired thug suggested with a sinister look, his gaze lingering on Elena from their last encounter, where her defiance had sparked a dangerous interest in him.

The manager also believed that the floor above was highly alert, making it difficult to take them out. They needed to devise a plan to lower their guard and gain access to that damn floor.

"You’re right; the people above need to be eliminated. Their fortress is impressive, and the renovations they made feel like a godsend for all of us. It has been modified to withstand disaster. I wonder if they knew that the disaster would arrive. Well, who cares? That floor will be ours."

He then had a good idea: the residents around here. He would use them to his advantage. After that, he checked the messages on his phone.

Elena was unaware that the thugs below had set their sights on them. Even if she knew, she would deal with it using force.

For now, she was busy instructing the little ones in their exercises. They had established a daily routine: running in unit 2602.

"Alright, good job, everyone! That’s it for today. Go ahead and bathe now," Elena said with a smile, watching the little ones panting from their simple running.

Afterward, she made her way to her unit and stepped into the space to freshen up.

Once she was finished, she picked up her phone and began scrolling through the latest messages in the group chat as she waited for her husband to return.

The group chat was filled with messages, mostly asking if anyone had food or water, as they feared they might starve before the typhoon passed.

Unit 1101: "Does anyone have extra supplies? I’ll buy them at four times the current price."

Unit 1801: "I’ll buy it for ten times the price. Is anyone willing?"

Unfortunately, no one was willing to sell their essential food supplies. The messages about requesting and purchasing essentials were buried in the group chat, as no one wanted to disclose their food stock. So, the conversation shifted to the rising water levels and the residents living in the corridor.

Unit 1301: "F*ck manager. Please provide a solution to this issue. The people camping outside my door are relieving themselves, and it’s causing a terrible smell.

Unit 1302: "I agree, manager. They are also very noisy, and the smell is unbearable."

Unit 1201: "Why don’t you let them into your unit so they can relieve themselves properly?"

Unit 1301: "@1201, do you really think I have water? I don’t have any, and even if I did, I’m uncomfortable sharing it. Since you asked, perhaps you have some extra water. I’ll let them know to visit your unit later."

Unit 1701: "Is there still no water? I can’t manage without it. If anyone has extra, I’ll buy it at double the price and cover your water bill next month once the typhoon passes. Please message me privately if you’re willing to help."

Unit 1201: "@1301, why are you angry? I was just making a suggestion. If you don’t want to share, that’s perfectly fine. It’s not like it’s my floor—then you’d have to deal with the smell."

The residents are currently arguing in the group chat about the lack of water resources. While the heavy rain could provide enough water, collecting it presents significant challenges.

Unit 1402: "Manager, could you please contact the authorities? I believe there are criminals on our floor, and I’m feeling unsafe."

Unit 1901: "I heard footsteps in the middle of the night, too. Did anyone else notice?" +10 likes.

Elena saw that the group chat was filled with anxiety after the recent robbery. With the law breaking down, the frequent presence of criminals in the area has made everyone increasingly uneasy.

Unit 2501: "I know everyone is feeling anxious. I’m open to letting you into my unit, but it’s quite crowded with my family. Is anyone else willing to open their doors to shelter those on the lower floors?"

Elena sneered as she read his self-righteous message.

’You mean your thug family.’

But no one responded. Instead, they chose to search for available units to accommodate everyone from the flooded floors.

Unit 1601: "Is there no available unit manager?"

Unit 2501: "There are available units, but the residents living there aren’t allowing it."

Unit 1901: "Who are they? Manager, let us know, and we’ll try to reach out."

Elena raised her brows, already anticipating the chat’s direction, but she continued reading nonetheless.

Unit 2501: "The vacant units are on the 26th floor and above. @3001, if you’re reading this, please let the people take shelter in your unit. I’ll ensure they pay for their stay."

Elena rolled her eyes, sneering at the unfolding drama, curious to see how the residents would respond.

Unit 1801: "Since you have a vacant unit @3001, let them in. As the saying goes, ’A little goodwill goes a long way in times of need.’" +10 likes

Unit 2201: "Manager, I agree. Let the others go upstairs and plead for shelter."

’Are they trying to morally coerce me to agree? Heh. Do they really think I was born yesterday?’ Elena thought, rolling her eyes in irritation. ’So, the manager wants to pin these people inside our unit, and this old lady is really starting to get on my nerves. Just because she agrees doesn’t mean I have to. Bullsh*t.’

Unit 1601: "@3001 might not be online. Come on, let’s go upstairs and ask the owner." +12 likes

Unit 2501: "Gather everyone. I’ll be waiting on the 25th floor."

Elena read the last message, noting it had been sent 15 minutes ago. Just as she was about to head downstairs, a knock echoed through her unit.

She opened the door to find Daniel standing there, ready to explain the situation, but she interrupted him before he could say a word.

"The residents of the building are looking for me, right?" she said with disdain.

"Yes, there are a lot of them, and some even have their belongings with them," Daniel replied, wondering how Elena was so aware of the situation.

He couldn’t help but also question why the residents were carrying their items; he had already formed a theory about it, but the sight still unsettled him.

"Oh, they’re daydreaming about entering and staying in our floor units. Come on, it’s time to stop their delusion," Elena said, sarcasm dripping from her words as she marched toward the stairs.

She was ready to confront them with logic, but if they insisted, her fists could do the talking.
