Chapter 106: Fog

Elena and Daniel went downstairs, with Lydia catching up as they reached the 27th floor.

Meanwhile, the others remained behind, glued to the CCTV screens, closely monitoring the unfolding situation.

As they descended, Elena spotted Ethan, Oslo, and Xander in a tense standoff with an older woman.

She demanded something, but the trio stood their ground, firmly refusing to back down.

Elena walked beside her husband, observing the standoff.

Upon seeing her, the women in the group felt a pang of jealousy.

She appeared well-dressed and composed, while they looked disheveled and unkempt, reflecting their struggle with a lack of water and resources.

Elena noticed the residents’ unrestrained envy but chose to ignore it. Turning to Ethan, she asked what had happened.

He explained that someone had been electrocuted and was now unconscious.

The residents blamed Xander for leaving live wires exposed in the gate and for misusing the electricity.

’Can they not see the big sign posted—’Electric Gate: Beware’? Elena thought, sneering at the residents.

It baffled her how they could overlook such a clear warning.

She also muttered, ’What did it matter to them if we used our own electricity?’ Then continued observing.

"Young man, the building currently has no electricity. Since you have a power supply, wouldn’t it be better to use it so the people can benefit? Don’t worry; we’ll handle the electric wiring—just let us enter, okay?" a woman forcefully suggested, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Elena exchanged a glance with Ethan, both taken aback by the audacity of the request.

The woman continued to press Xander, trying to corner him into agreement.

However, Xander remained steadfast, refusing to yield to her insistence.

"We don’t have much gasoline—just enough to generate electricity for this gate," Xander stated firmly.

But the woman stood her ground, rattling on confidently, knowing the other residents supported her.

She was convinced that the upper floor, with its fewer occupants, would eventually give in to their demands.

"It would be a waste to use it for this. Look, the residents are still peaceful, and besides, you have this sturdy gate—no one can enter. How about I pay you, and you let me use your electricity?" the older woman proposed excitedly, believing Oslo would give her face.

’Peaceful? Where does she live that she’s unaware of the situation in this building?’ Elena thought.

She smirked, scanning the faces of the residents who had joined the commotion.

Many were here because the manager had privately messaged them that the unit above had lots of food supplies.

Elena had enough of their nonsense. She interjected, her voice steady and firm. "No, I disagree. Find your own generator. Don’t burden us with your righteous agenda."

The residents were outraged by her blatant refusal, convinced that they should support one another in times of chaos.

Meanwhile, the thugs’ eyes gleamed at the sight of Elena and Lydia.

They had been discussing Elena, the elusive beauty from the upper floors, and their excitement revealed their sinister intentions.

"Young lady, don’t be so quick to decline. How about I pay you double? No, let’s make it ten times. Just remember, this typhoon will pass, and then you’ll have plenty of money," another older woman chimed in, her tone persuasive.

She was tired of eating dried foods and longed to cook a proper meal, but her electric stove was useless without electricity.

Elena was dumbfounded. ’Tsk! Did I look like someone with no money?’

She firmly declined, eager to end the idle chatter. "No matter what you say, I will decline. So stop persuading me; it won’t work. Is there anything else?" she stated, her tone leaving no room for further discussion.

The old woman was so angry that she wanted to remind Elena of her disrespect toward older people, but upon seeing the manager’s gaze, she held back her words, choosing to swallow her indignation instead.

Just then, another man stepped up to the front gate, his voice cutting through the tension. "Hello, do you have any available units?"

Elena looked at the man, puzzled by his sinister expression. Nevertheless, she replied coldly, "Who told you we have an available unit?"

"Well, we just noticed. Since you just arrived a while ago and there are a lot of floors you’ve bought, maybe there’s still a unit available," the middle-aged man said politely, maintaining his facade.

He had grown tired of living in the corridor, and now that they had an option, he was determined to make the most of it.

Plus, the manager had promised them that if they could persuade the occupants of the upper floors, they would be rewarded with food supplies frёewebηovel.cѳm

Elena then glanced at the man’s back and noticed the manager silently watching, his expression inscrutable as he observed the unfolding scene.

A sneer formed on Elena’s lips as she turned her attention back to the group. "I don’t know where you got your information, but we occupy every unit here. Enough with the idle talk—leave, all of you. Whatever request you have, I will decline it."

The residents on the lower floor felt embarrassed by Elena’s reprimand. They glanced at the manager, seeking help; otherwise, they would have no choice but to return to the corridor.

"Why can’t you just hear us out? We should look out for each other," an old woman insisted.

"Why should I listen to your whims? You’re not my mother; who do you think you are?" Elena sneered, her gaze sharp as she looked at them.

"You—" the old woman stammered, embarrassed and wanting to say more, but Elena cut her off sharply.

"It’s quite funny how you keep insisting on entering our floor. Why don’t you try knocking on the other floors and see if they are willing to help?" Elena shot back.

The residents were left speechless. They had tried everything, but no one was willing to help, especially after the robbery in unit 1401, which had made everyone wary and distrustful of one another.

After his silent observation, the manager concluded that only a few residents lived above. A smirk crept across his face at the thought of his plan to raid them tonight. He stepped forward, breaking the tension in the air.

"Since they are unwilling to cooperate, let’s just find another way," he said, attempting to portray the residents on the upper floor as the villains in this situation. His tone was manipulative, aiming to turn the lower-floor residents against their neighbors.

The old woman, unable to contain her frustration any longer, crossed her arms defiantly and accused Elena, "You probably didn’t use all the gasoline for the power generator on the rooftop, which is why the electricity cut off in the middle. Maybe you used it for yourself!"

The residents murmured among themselves, casting questioning glances at Elena. However, she did not bother to explain.

’No matter how I explain, they’ll always find fault. Let them think what they want; it doesn’t matter to me.’

With no other choice, the residents reluctantly turned to leave the floor. As they walked away, Elena coldly stared at their retreating backs.

Meanwhile, Ethan quietly observed the thugs lurking nearby and finally realized their motive: to gauge them thoroughly.

After the residents left, Elena and the others began walking upstairs, leaving Xander behind to watch over the floor.

"The residents here seem strange; they act so entitled," Lydia remarked after observing them.

With disdain, she added, "Some have a sinister look. They remind me of a gang I encountered before, and how the manager handled the situation makes me distrust him."

Lydia was unaware of the underlying situation, so she based her conclusions solely on her observations.

"They’re thugs, more like criminals from the underworld. You should be careful and not just wander off without telling us; otherwise, you’ll get kidnapped again," Oslo replied, his tone a mix of concern and mockery.

Elena watched them with a smirk, noticing that Lydia and Oslo were getting along. It made her wonder if they had finally resolved their previous misunderstandings.

"They’ll probably try to enter our floor this evening. They seem eager to take control of this building," Ethan informed them.

"If they dare to come, that would be better. They’re making it easy for us to find them," Elena replied, already planning to eliminate them for her own peace of mind.

Meanwhile, the manager outlined his plan for the night, detailing how they would handle the residents.

"Let’s split into three groups tonight," the manager proposed. "Two groups will raid the lower floors, while the third will attempt to break into the higher floors. Based on my observations, there are only a few of them."

Everyone nodded in excitement.

"That woman is so beautiful and feisty; I can’t wait to have a taste of her," the red-haired thug remarked, eagerly anticipating the evening ahead.

As they were discussing the plan, a sudden shout from another thug disrupted their focus. "Look outside! The area is covered in fog. I can’t see anything!"

They quickly checked outside and confirmed it: the fog obscured everything, rendering visibility nearly impossible.

The manager burst into hysterical laughter, exclaiming, "Even the heavens are helping us! Prepare, everyone; we will take over this building!"
