Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Start of the Second Trial, Points Chasing

After watching Celeste's recording, Karl moved on to the next one on the list:

[Sylas Crowell].

He was ranked first, and Karl was curious to see how he'd pulled it off.

[1. Sylas Crowell: 0.4 seconds]

Less than half a second to defeat three orcs.

That didn't even seem real.

Karl opened the recording, and a familiar panel popped up in front of him.

Sylas appeared on the screen.

The guy was ridiculously tall with bright red hair that practically looked like fire.

'That's the guy I saw in the plaza,' Alex thought.

He stood calmly, facing the three orcs on the other side of the barrier.

Then, the moment the barrier vanished—

Fwish! Slash! Boom!

It was over before Karl could even process what happened.

Sylas had summoned three completely white blades out of nowhere.

They hovered for just a split second before shooting forward, each one targeting a different orc.

All three blades pierced the orcs' heads at the exact same time.

[End of trial: 0.4 seconds.]

[Sylas Crowell - Level 17]

Karl blinked at the screen.

'Okay, this is just stupid,' he thought.

Sylas was level 17, one level above him and Celeste.

He must've been grinding like crazy on the first floor, as well as clearing dungeons, and hunting monsters outside the city.

Karl could've tried to do the same, but there was one problem.

He couldn't leave the city.

To venture outside, you needed an [Authorization], and Karl didn't have one.

He wasn't from a powerful family, and his name wasn't known enough to get the city's approval.

Still, he didn't feel too bad about his own performance.

He'd held his own so far.

Besides, the rankings weren't just about prestige.

Higher ranks meant more Credits, and those Credits would be useful later on.

But for now, he had to stay focused.

A few minutes passed as Karl kept watching other recordings.

Then—

Ding!

[The second trial will start shortly...]

Another panel appeared right next to that notification.

This one, however, was personal.

[Number of people who watched your first trial: 23,847]

Karl raised an eyebrow.

Nearly a third of the participants had watched his fight against the orcs.

"Guess I made the right call only using two of my spirits," he thought.

He quickly glanced over his list of summons.

[Summons: Frenzied Rabbit, Demonized Bear, Alpha Dire Wolf, Thorned Vine Beast, Alpha Whip Wolf, Nature Wolf, Dire Fox, Shadow Golem, Stonefang Ape, Rock Hound, x4 Armored Goblin Guards, Sovereign Wolf]

He still had plenty of powerful spirits left to surprise people later.

Each summon was like a part of his family.

Losing even one would hurt, not just emotionally but strategically too.

And there was always the looming threat of the [World of Spirits], a risk he couldn't afford to ignore.

[Teleporting to the Second Trial.]

Once again, Karl felt the familiar pull as he was teleported out of the participant area.

But this time, he didn't end up in a small, circular arena.

Instead, he found himself standing in the middle of a massive open field.

[Second Trial: Points Chasing]

A new set of instructions appeared.

[Monsters will spawn around you in this arena. Each monster is worth 1 point.]

[This trial will last twenty minutes. You will be ranked based on how many points you collect.]

Karl nodded to himself.

So it wasn't just about speed anymore.

This trial tested endurance and strategy.

The first trial had been simple: kill three monsters as fast as possible.

But this time, they'd be throwing waves of monsters at him over a long period.

It was about who could maintain their performance under pressure.

Sure, some people could take down monsters in a flash, but what happened when their stamina or mana ran out?

Karl would need to balance his strength carefully.

"Well, I can't just rely on the Frenzied Rabbit and Alpha Dire Wolf if I want to win this one," he muttered.

With fifteen spirits at his disposal, Karl had the perfect setup to cover the entire field.

He could send his summons out in different directions to gather points while he handled the rest.

In fact, he was pretty sure his [Sovereign Wolf] could clear this entire trial on its own.

But...

"For the future's sake..." Karl clenched his fist.

He wanted to win, sure, but he also didn't want to reveal all his cards just yet.

Too many unknown variables were at play.

It was smarter to hold back for now.

So instead, he lifted his arm.

"Come forth, my summons!"

With a flash of light, Karl summoned the [Frenzied Rabbit], the [Alpha Dire Wolf], and his four [Armored Goblin Guards].

The first goblin was made entirely from goblin spirits, but the other three were fused with the [Goblin King] spirit.

Karl hadn't noticed any changes in their appearance or names, but maybe their abilities were different.

He'd have to test that out later.

"The Goblin King didn't turn into a giant summon like the Frostfang Wolf..."

That was probably because of the combination of spirits he used, or maybe the fact that there was a human spirit mixed in.

That was Alex's theory, anyway.

But to test it properly, Karl would need to kill another human and gather their spirit.

"I'll figure that out later. First comes the trial."

For now, these six summons would be enough.

They were strong, but not too flashy, perfect for keeping his true strength under wraps.

[3...]

The countdown started.

Around him, monsters began materializing on the field.

[Orc Warrior - Level 16]

[Field Golem - Level 16]

[Grass Hopper - Level 16]

All the monsters were around the same level, which worked perfectly for Karl.

He'd be able to harvest [Spirit Orbs] from them as well.

Another win-win.

His [Spectral Blade] still had nine strikes left, too.

That'd help if things got tricky.

[2...]

Karl readied himself.

He glanced at his summons, giving them a quick nod.

"Let's do this."

[1...]

The monsters locked onto him, and the trial officially began.

[Start!]

Karl didn't hesitate.

"You know the drill, yada yada," he muttered, more to himself than his summons.

The [Frenzied Rabbit] shot forward like a blur, targeting the nearest monsters.

The [Alpha Dire Wolf] let out a powerful [Roar], stunning the monsters in place for a second.

It was strong enough to affect them all.

Meanwhile, the [Armored Goblin Guards] charged in.

They were small, barely over a meter tall, but their strength was no joke.

Each goblin wielded a tiny sword, stabbing and slashing through the monsters with surprising ease.

Within seconds, Karl started seeing notifications pop up around him.

[Killed Orc Warrior, +1 Point]

[Killed Field Golem, +1 Point]

[Killed Grass Hopper, +1 Point]

More and more points rolled in as his summons tore through the enemies.

Karl could've just stood there and let them handle everything, but that wasn't his style.

Instead, he spotted a group of monsters his summons hadn't reached yet.

With a grin, he sprinted towards them.
