Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Farming Points, End of the Second Trial

With his blade gleaming in hand, Karl dashed into the chaos of the second trial, making sure to stay active and sharp.

He wouldn't just stand back and let his spirits handle everything.

Whenever he noticed monsters his spirits weren't targeting, Karl sprang into action.

With a swift movement, he would close the distance and slash them apart using his [Spectral Blade].

Slash! Slash! Slash!

The blade sliced through monsters like they were made of paper.

He didn't know if it was his increased stats from leveling up or if his [Spectral Blade] was just that powerful, but every creature he faced fell in one or two strikes, no more.

If a monster was too far for him to reach, he didn't panic.

Instead, Karl raised a hand and fired off his [Spirit Flames].

The small white flames shot out, homing in on the enemies, and upon contact, they died instantly.

The spirits burned through them with ease, leaving nothing behind but ash.

Despite how smooth everything was going, there was one small problem with this trial.

Because Karl had so many spirits aiding him, the monsters were wiped out fast.

They didn't stand a chance.

But once all the monsters were gone, there was a waiting period.

It took about twenty seconds for new monsters to respawn, and during that time, Karl couldn't earn any points.

No matter how strong he was, there was no way to get an infinite score if there were no enemies to fight.

Still, Karl didn't let it bother him.

He kept moving, kept slashing, and made sure to protect his spirits with his blade whenever they were in danger.

It was a smooth system, they worked together well.

Karl could feel the sweat dripping down his face.

Running around constantly was tiring, but in the end, it was worth every bit of effort.

And then, just like that...

Ding!

[End of the Second Trial.]

[Score: 463 points.]

"Nice," Karl muttered, a satisfied grin creeping across his face.

He felt pretty good about his performance.

Before he left, Karl made sure to grab all the spirit orbs from the defeated monsters.

[+47 Orc Warrior Spirits, +38 Field Golem Spirits, +45 Grasshopper Spirits.]

Even though he'd killed over 450 monsters, he had a limit to how many spirits he could store.

So, he maxed out before he could collect everything.

Still, it was a good haul.

[Level: 16 (94.00%)]

He was so close to leveling up.

Just a little more, and he'd hit level 17.

[Your proficiency with "Spectral Blade" has increased by 14%.]

[Your proficiency with "Spirit Flames" has increased by 5%.]

Not bad.

Every little bit of growth counted.

And then, the scoreboard appeared in front of him.

[1. Sylas Crowell: 512 Points.]

[2. Celeste Frost: 510 Points.]

[3. Darius Blackthorn: 472 Points.]

[4. Karl Bloodborne: 463 Points.]

[5. Eira Stormbane: 461 Points.]

It was a close call, but Karl managed to secure the fourth spot.

Not bad considering the competition.

Celeste had somehow taken second place, which didn't surprise him too much.

Maybe her long-range abilities and better mana regeneration gave her an edge.

Karl let out a soft sigh.

"Come back, my summons," he whispered.

His spirits vanished into small white particles, leaving him alone again.

The silence was almost eerie compared to the chaos just moments before.

[You will be directly teleported to the Third Trial in one minute.]

There was no break this time, no chance to check other participants' recordings or even head back to the lobby.

But for Karl, that one minute was enough.

He had a plan.

Closing his eyes, Karl whispered, "Spirit Cemetery."

When he opened them again, he found himself inside his Spirit Cemetery.

Dozens upon dozens of tombstones rose from the ground, casting long shadows in the dim light.

Ignoring the eerie atmosphere, Karl moved forward, stopping right in front of the graves.

"Link twice," he commanded.

Fwish! Fwish!

Because his Spirit Cemetery and Spirit Storage were both full, he could perform two spirit links.

That meant creating two new, potentially powerful spirits while still keeping 50 regular ones in reserve for later.

The first 50 spirits emerged from the tombstones, goblins, orc warriors, field golems, and grasshoppers.

Without hesitation, they began to move toward one another, merging into a single form.

Fwoosh!

[+Golem Warrior]

The result was a massive spirit golem made of rock, wielding a heavy axe.

Patches of grass covered its body, remnants of the monsters that had fused to create it.

It was clearly a combination of all the spirits Karl had used.

But it wasn't over yet.

The second link was next.

The process began again, but this time, something felt different.

Among the spirits was the [Goblin King] spirit.

The last few times Karl had tried linking it, it only produced regular goblins.

So, he didn't expect much from this one either.

The spirits began merging, but then...

A bright flash of light erupted, brighter than anything he'd seen before.

It was the same kind of light that had appeared when the [Sovereign Wolf] was born.

And from that light emerged...

[+Orc King]

The creature stood nearly three meters tall, a jagged, oversized blade in one hand and a crown perched atop its head.

It radiated power.

"Finally," Karl muttered with a sigh of relief, "Took long enough for another boss-type spirit to appear."

Karl didn't know exactly how to classify these spirits.

He'd asked the reaper for answers before, but all it ever said was, "It will be explained later."

Not very helpful.

So, Karl came up with his own system.

The regular spirits were just spirits, but ones like the [Sovereign Wolf] and the new [Orc King]?

He called them boss-type spirits.

"Good," Karl said to himself.

He knew how powerful boss spirits could be.

Having another one was like having a secret weapon ready for anything unexpected.

Though, if he had to guess, the [Orc King] was probably weaker than the [Sovereign Wolf], especially since the wolf had that [Voidblade Sovereign] talent.

With everything done, Karl closed his eyes and whispered the incantation again, returning to the domain of the second trial.

He arrived just in time.

Fwish!

[Out of 67,371 participants, 48,265 managed to pass the second trial.]

[Do you want to proceed or give up now?]

This time, more people gave up.

Maybe they struggled too much in the second trial, or maybe they had already met the conditions required by their desired academies.

For most people, though, completing all three trials was the only way to guarantee a spot.

As long as Karl didn't mess up, he was confident he'd be recruited into [Starlight Academy].

[The Third Trial will start now.]

Without warning, Karl was teleported to the final location of the [Entrance Examination].

'No more holding back, I think?' he mumbled as he was sucked into the portal.

Holding back had its benefits, it let him hide some of his abilities for surprise advantages later.

But if he held back too much and his evaluation suffered because of it, that could cost him his admission.

And that was a problem he couldn't afford.

For now, though, Karl was confident.

Whatever the third trial threw at him, he was ready.
