Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 101: Burying the Hatchet
Seeing Mr. Sheng staring blankly at his granddaughter’s retreating back, Old Sir Gu spoke up.
"Uncle Gu, why don’t you ride in my car over there? I thought Jiaojiao would ride with me, but who knew that boy Shuo Ci would take off so fast!"
"Haha... Shuo Ci certainly cares a lot about Jiaojiao. These old bones of mine won’t be taking your car."
"Then I’ll walk over with you. You’re looking much more energetic this week. Does that mean your health is no longer a major concern?"
"Jiaojiao said I wasn’t sick, just malnourished. She’s been making us chicken soup every day. Look at me, I can walk now without getting winded."
Old Sir Gu showed off happily, walking with a newfound vigor. He had been standing for quite a while just now and wasn’t out of breath at all.
Mr. Sheng pushed his bicycle, walking side-by-side with Old Sir Gu. He tactfully avoided mentioning how Gu Jinghua had fainted.
He was simply too ashamed to bring it up, and Old Sir Gu didn’t ask. The old man could guess that his eldest grandson must have fainted after hearing something.
The two walked slowly, chatting harmoniously about Gu Jiaojiao.
Meanwhile, Gu Jiaojiao and Su Shuochi quickly reached the three-way intersection, where they saw Gu Jinghua still lying on the ground.
Uncle Geng was wringing his hands and pacing back and forth, while passersby gave them a wide berth.
"Uncle Geng, you must have been worried." Gu Jiaojiao hopped off the wheelchair.
"Jiaojiao, hurry and take a look. Jinghua fainted from anger after hearing other people’s gossip," Geng Ruixian immediately reported.
Gu Jiaojiao crouched down to take Gu Jinghua’s pulse. It was a syncope caused by a fit of rage. She quickly gave him a few acupuncture needles.
A moment later, Gu Jinghua woke up. The first thing he saw was Jiaojiao’s ice-cold expression.
He thought Jiaojiao was putting on a cold face because she was worried about him. "Jiaojiao~ Eldest Brother is fine. Don’t worry."
"Eldest Brother Gu, you’re overthinking things. I wasn’t worried about you. I’m angry because my patient is being disobedient, that’s all."
Gu Jiaojiao’s bone-chilling voice struck Gu Jinghua’s heart like hailstones.
Gu Jinghua was speechless.
’Could it be that Jiaojiao thinks I fainted from anger over the negative news about Yueyue?’
Su Shuochi went forward and helped his brother-in-law up. "Eldest Brother Gu, would you like to rest on this bench for a bit, or walk home slowly?"
He was a staunch supporter of his wife. When his wife called Gu Jinghua "Eldest Brother," he called him "Eldest Brother." When his wife called him "Eldest Brother Gu," he immediately changed his address as well.
"Uncle Geng, you should sit down and rest for a while. You’ve had a lot to worry about just now."
Gu Jiaojiao said to Geng Ruixian in a slightly softer tone.
"Jiaojiao, I’m feeling fine. Are you just saying that so your brother can rest a bit before we go?"
Geng Ruixian said, giving Gu Jinghua a deep look. He had watched this nephew of his grow up.
’He wasn’t a foolish man. Why worry about that shameless adopted sister when he has such a wonderful biological sister right here?’
Gu Jiaojiao could see that Geng Ruixian was trying to give Gu Jinghua a wake-up call, but you can’t wake someone who’s pretending to be asleep.
She did have some concern and sympathy for this biological brother of hers, but only out of respect for their blood ties.
However, he kept ruining his own health time and time again for Sheng Yueyue’s sake.
This earned Gu Jiaojiao’s immense scorn. On top of being mentally exhausting, it created a rift in their already distant sibling relationship.
The worst thing in any relationship is when you care with all your heart, only for the other person to take your affection for granted, squandering it without a second thought.
"Jiaojiao~ you must be tired. Let me give you a massage." Su Shuochi pulled his wife onto his lap in the wheelchair and began massaging her arms.
He didn’t even spare Gu Jinghua a glance. ’Hmph! You upset my wife, so you can just fend for yourself.’
Seeing everyone’s disappointment in him, Gu Jinghua sat on the bench, gathered his thoughts, and spoke.
"Jiaojiao, I didn’t faint from anger over Sheng Yueyue. It was because I heard people saying that children who grew up on the farms are ill-bred.
That’s what made me so angry that I passed out. So what if we spent many years feeding pigs on the farm? We never stopped studying.
When those people sent our Gu Family to the farm, they specifically emphasized to the farm’s management that we must be thoroughly "tempered" at the grassroots level.
Only by enduring the greatest hardships and eating the bitterest food could we "recall past bitterness to appreciate present sweetness" and reform our so-called corrupted minds.
We had to work and study every single day. How is that being ill-bred?!"
Seeing Gu Jinghua’s earnest explanation and the sincerity in his eyes, Gu Jiaojiao’s tone softened.
"As long as you stop ruining your health over it, it’s understandable to be worried about Sheng Yueyue."
"Jiaojiao, Eldest Brother really isn’t worried about her anymore. I had already let it go by the time I walked out of the house today!"
Su Shuochi glanced at Gu Jinghua. He believed that statement. He had noticed that Gu Jinghua’s mood seemed lighter when they were leaving the house.
"Jiaojiao, Eldest Brother Gu is telling the truth." He also hoped his wife and her brother could bury the hatchet.
"Then just focus on getting better from now on," Gu Jiaojiao said flatly.
’She was long past the age of competing for affection, so she truly hadn’t taken this matter to heart.’
’She was only unhappy because Gu Jinghua’s constant fretting over Sheng Yueyue was preventing his health from improving, wasting a great deal of medicine.’
’She even wondered if she should just stop his medication and be done with it.’
"Jinghua, you’re not feeling unwell, are you?" Old Sir Gu asked, seeing his grandson sitting perfectly fine on the bench.
"Grandpa, I’m sorry to have made you worry. It’s my fault for having such a weak constitution. I was overcome with anger and fainted."
Mr. Sheng, who had come along with him, was speechless.
He prayed silently in his heart: ’Please don’t say you fainted because of my daughter. I’d still like to have some face left.’
"The fact that Jinghua woke up so quickly proves it’s nothing serious. Jiaojiao must be hungry after her classes, let’s go home and eat."
"Yes, let’s go home." Gu Jinghua completely let go of that lingering hope, and his steps felt much lighter.
Most people in the residential compound now knew that a group of gossips had angered Su Shuochi’s brother-in-law so much that he had fainted.
As a result, whenever pedestrians saw the man in the wheelchair, they would give him a wide berth, making sure to steer clear of his group.
"Grandpa, why is everyone avoiding me like the plague? Do I look that awful?"
Gu Jinghua couldn’t help but ask. Otherwise, he would start overthinking again, which would affect his health and earn his sister’s disdain.
Old Sir Gu was speechless. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
’He didn’t know why it was happening either!’
"Eldest Brother, you’re overthinking it again. They’re not avoiding you.
Generally, when people avoid you, it’s either because you’re too outstanding, or because you’ve offended every single one of them."
Gu Jiaojiao teased Gu Jinghua with a broad smile, her eyes crinkling. This brother of hers really did love to let his imagination run wild.
"Haha... Jinghua, you’re taking yourself too seriously. These people are avoiding Shuo Ci and Jiaojiao,"
Old Sir Gu said, realizing the truth. He immediately joined his granddaughter in teasing his grandson.
Geng Ruixian also breathed a silent sigh of relief. ’He had thought the passersby were avoiding him because of his fading, aged appearance!’
He couldn’t help but straighten his back. And while he didn’t exactly walk with a spring in his step, his posture was no longer as stooped as before.
’He had to fix his attitude and eat properly, lest his own relatives no longer recognize him.’
Seeing everyone walking ahead, talking and laughing, Mr. Sheng also felt relieved. No one had brought up his disappointing daughter.
"General Sheng, would you like to join us for dinner at our place?" Gu Jiaojiao asked after some hesitation as they approached the intersection where they would part ways.
