Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Gaining a Huge Advantage

Gu Jiaojiao bought two rabbits and a large pig’s trotter for Su Shuochi to help his leg heal.

The Su family didn’t have a refrigerator, but she had her storage space, so when she saw fresh pork belly, she bought eleven pounds of it as well.

She also bought two sets of pork offal. The Su family grew their own vegetables, so she only needed to buy meat.

She figured that Mr. Su and Su’s mother would be home early after quitting their jobs, so they didn’t browse any longer.

Mr. Su and Su’s mother, who Gu Jiaojiao had been thinking about, had no trouble quitting their jobs and were home by nine o’clock.

Back home, Mr. Su was fiddling with a mobile cart while Su’s mother was tending to the vegetable garden when a series of urgent knocks sounded at the door.

"Coming, coming!"

Su’s mother opened the door and saw the Dong Family’s stepmother leading a group of people, who were carrying a reclining chair. Her heart skipped a beat.

"Little Sister-in-law, this is Jiaojiao’s grandfather, her parents, and her two older brothers. Where is Jiaojiao?"

"Jiaojiao and Shuo Ci went out shopping. Please, come in quickly! Husband, come out and help! Jiaojiao’s family is here."

"Coming~"

Mr. Su immediately came out to help Old Sir Gu, while Su’s mother enthusiastically led the others into the house.

Ren Xiaofang fled as if escaping. She usually loved taking petty advantages.

But today, she had already gotten her advantage just by delivering the Gu Family to the Su family’s doorstep, so she turned and ran.

Old Sir Gu felt a chill in his heart, but he couldn’t say anything. After all, he had endured more than enough scornful looks over the past ten years.

Su’s mother saw the Gu Family looking as dejected as wilted eggplants, but she didn’t look down on them. After her son’s injury, he had been in an even worse state.

At least the Gu Family’s clothes were clean. In this day and age, the gap between rich and poor wasn’t that wide.

Everyone wore clothes in shades of gray, black, and blue, making them all look more or less the same.

Su’s mother told Mr. Su to bring over some hot water for the Gu Family to wash their hands, while she prepared a cup of malted milk for each of the three who were awake. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Gu Jingtai’s eyes welled up as he held the fragrant cup of malted milk. His family would occasionally buy a jar of it.

Back then, they all had an unspoken agreement to save it for their little sister to drink.

Just then, Mrs. Gu, having been jostled awake on the reclining chair during the journey, also came to. Su’s mother immediately used a hot, damp cloth to wipe her face and hands.

"My dear in-law, drink some hot water. I’ll go make you a cup of malted milk. Jiaojiao said that people who have just woken up from a faint should drink some hot water first."

Mrs. Gu was in a daze, looking around the living room and realizing this wasn’t the slightly more upscale furniture from her parents’ home.

Mr. Gu took a sip of the malted milk. He hadn’t drunk it in years. It still had that same old taste—no, it was even more fragrant.

But with his eldest son still unconscious, he was in no mood to savor the flavor and simply gulped it all down, unable to appreciate it.

Old Sir Gu had been running on fumes, but after a few sips of the malted milk, his spirits lifted ever so slightly.

"My friend, we’re imposing on you."

"Not at all, not at all. You’re Jiaojiao’s family, which makes you our relatives. It’s no problem at all for you to stay with us until you’ve recovered."

Su’s mother said enthusiastically, "It’s all thanks to Jiaojiao that my son has pulled himself together. I’m so grateful to you all."

"That’s right. This house was assigned to my son by his work unit, which means it’s Jiaojiao’s. There are three rooms on the second floor, and only our daughter lives there by herself."

Mr. Su said with simple-hearted sincerity, his expression so genuine that it made Old Sir Gu, who was all too familiar with the fickleness of human nature, lower his guard.

"Would you like to go upstairs and get some sleep?" Su’s mother asked tentatively, seeing how exhausted the Gu Family looked.

"When will... Jiaojiao... be back?" Mr. Gu asked.

"She should be back early today. Usually, she doesn’t get home until the afternoon..."

Su’s mother then chattered on, excitedly telling the Gu Family all about how she and her husband had quit their jobs to start a street stall.

She was just so excited and hadn’t had anyone to share the news with. Mr. Su chimed in, his own eyes dancing with enthusiasm.

The Gu Family quickly understood that this was their granddaughter’s (daughter’s/sister’s) idea.

"My friend, wasn’t it good for you to have jobs?" Mr. Gu felt his daughter was just making trouble.

"Jiaojiao said we can earn more by running a stall than we did enduring people’s scorn at work. She said running a stall isn’t stealing or robbing, and that everywhere needs to let some people get rich first."

Old Sir Gu felt a new wave of curiosity toward this granddaughter he had yet to meet. He’d had similar thoughts himself.

Listening to Mr. Su and Su’s mother, Gu Jingtai’s mind began to race with ideas. He had been hoping to come to the city to find work!

Lying on the Su family’s reclining chair, Old Sir Gu felt very comfortable. The simple, honest nature of Mr. Su and Su’s mother put him at ease.

"What’s wrong with my brother-in-law? I’ll go ask Doctor Sun to come take a look," Mr. Su said with concern, noticing Gu Jinghua’s dark, bruised face.

"Doctor Sun has already seen him. We can only wait for him to wake up on his own... If..."

"It’s alright, our Jiaojiao knows medicine. Let’s just wait for her to get back. Husband, go to the gate and see if they’re back yet."

"Jiaojiao knows medicine? Don’t go look. We can afford to wait."

Old Sir Gu was stunned. ’Could she have inherited her grandmother’s talent?’

Su’s mother’s eyes darted toward the main gate as she whispered to Mr. Gu and his son.

"She does. I’ll let you in on a secret, she said she can cure my son’s leg, and that’s something many famous, authoritative doctors couldn’t fix."

Mr. Gu was amused by Su’s mother’s mannerisms. He didn’t know if it was because of this newfound hope or something else, but his mood instantly lightened.

Mrs. Gu and Gu Jingtai were a little farther away and didn’t hear what Su’s mother said, but they saw Mr. Gu’s obvious happiness.

They felt happy as well, and the atmosphere in the living room became very harmonious, lacking the strained feeling they’d had at the Dong Family’s home.

Su’s mother went to the vegetable garden to pick some vegetables, telling Mr. Su to stay and chat with the Gu Family.

Mr. Su was an honest man, and with just a few clever words, the shrewd Old Sir Gu managed to pry out all of Gu Jiaojiao’s recent history.

Old Sir Gu learned that the Sheng Family had actually published a notice in the newspaper to disown Jiaojiao. ’What’s so wrong with Jiaojiao wanting to compete with Sheng Xinglian for favor?’

’If Sheng Xinglian wanted to compete with Jiaojiao for his affection, he would just treat it as having two granddaughters. What was the harm in that?’

’So they disowned her? Fine. His granddaughter had her own family to dote on her.’ Outwardly, Old Sir Gu’s expression didn’t change.

Mr. Su assumed they didn’t mind, so he answered whatever the old man asked, even repeating the insults the people in the compound had hurled at Gu Jiaojiao.

This made Mrs. Gu so angry she almost fainted again. Gu Jingtai kept patting his mother’s back, furious himself.

Seeing that his daughter-in-law and grandson couldn’t take it anymore, Old Sir Gu changed the subject. ’This in-law is too honest,’ he thought. ’I’ll have to get the details from him alone later.’

In her garden, Su’s mother had green squash, eggplants, green beans, and green peppers, and she picked some of everything.

She wanted to show off her skills and make a sumptuous lunch to welcome the Gu Family, and also have Jiaojiao comment on her cooking.

"Mom, why did you pick so many vegetables today?" Gu Jiaojiao asked curiously as she pushed Su Shuochi into the courtyard.

"Jiaojiao, your grandfather and your parents are here," Su’s mother said with a wide smile.

"My grandpa’s here?" Gu Jiaojiao abandoned Su Shuochi and ran into the house.

Su Shuochi...

’So my wife doesn’t want me anymore now that she has her family back!’

’That’s not happening!’ He maneuvered his wheelchair and zipped inside after her.
