Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Family Reunion

"Grandpa~! Grandpa~! You’re here—" Gu Jiaojiao flew into the room, excitedly calling for her grandfather.

But when she saw Old Sir Gu and the others, she froze. ’Where is my grandpa?’

The living room was filled with four reclining chairs placed side-by-side. Not only were there two extra chairs, but they were occupied by four people who looked like they were on the verge of death.

A young man lay unconscious on the innermost chair.

Next to him was an old man of indeterminate age. His face was a waxy yellow, and each deep-set wrinkle seemed carved perfectly into his skin.

An old man wasn’t a strange sight, but what was strange was that this one looked like he was barely hanging on by a thread.

There was also a man who wasn’t old but appeared weathered and haggard. His complexion was a ghastly mix of ashen gray and dark, utterly devoid of color.

Finally, there was an old woman who looked sick beyond saving. A dark-skinned, skinny young man sat beside her chair, so emaciated that his eyes seemed to bulge from their sockets.

They all stared at Gu Jiaojiao with feverish intensity. In her past life, Gu Jiaojiao had seen it all; her mental fortitude was excellent.

After a two-second pause, she asked, "Grandpa, are you not feeling well? May I take a look?"

"Yes, you may," Old Sir Gu said, suppressing his emotions and trying to hold back his tears.

But Gu Jiaojiao could still hear the tremor in his voice. ’I’ll get used to it after calling him that a few more times.’

"Don’t worry, Grandpa. Your granddaughter is very skilled. I can treat most common illnesses."

"Jiaojiao, this is your father, and that’s your mother. But please, look at your eldest brother first. He was so angered by that ingrate that he passed out."

"Dad, Mom, Second Brother, please make yourselves at home here," Gu Jiaojiao said, greeting them with practiced ease.

’Since I’ve taken over this body, I have an obligation to care for her family.’

’Besides, the original owner has already been reincarnated. From now on, the Gu Family is my family.’

What was particularly satisfying for Gu Jiaojiao was that Grandpa Gu had actually called the novel’s original heroine an "ingrate."

’Haha!’

’It used to be the two Sheng Family brothers and the women in the compound who called the original me an ingrate. It feels so good to have family protecting me.’

’Terminally ill? Not a problem, I can treat it. I have a hundred billion yuan’s worth of medical supplies. Skin and bones? Even less of a problem. I have food.’

’Treating my own family for free is fine. My space can be upgraded. Haha!’

"Grandpa, Dad, Mom, Eldest Brother, Second Brother," Su Shuochi echoed as he followed her inside.

He was genuinely happy to see his wife’s radiant smile.

In his excitement, Su Shuochi couldn’t quite tell who was who, but he knew that building a good rapport was what mattered most.

’My wife saw her family and just left me at the door,’ he thought, ’but I can’t bring myself to blame her.’

The Gu Family members turned toward the voice and saw an exceptionally handsome man in a wheelchair.

Even more astonishing was that both of his hands were full of bags, and his lap was piled high with even more things.

Meanwhile, their Jiaojiao’s hands were empty. ’He’s in a wheelchair, yet he still knows how to dote on his wife. Not bad.’

Mr. Su immediately went over and took the items from his son’s hands. "Perfect timing. Jiaojiao’s family is here. This rabbit is nice and fat. We can have your mother show off her skills."

"Hehe, my mom was a professional cook back in the countryside," Su Shuochi said smugly. "Grandpa, you’re all in for a treat from now on."

’My wife loves a great cook,’ he thought, ’so the Gu Family shouldn’t look down on that, right?’

The Gu Family: ...

’Look down on it? We don’t dare! Our situation is even worse than people in the countryside!’

"Let me take a look at Eldest Brother first," Gu Jiaojiao said, noticing the slightly awkward expressions on her family’s faces.

As Gu Jiaojiao took his pulse, she finally had a moment to carefully examine Eldest Brother Gu.

His complexion was a bit dark, lacking any trace of refined elegance. Instead, he had the weathered look of someone who had endured great hardship.

His eyelids were slightly puffy, and faint shadows lay beneath his lowered lashes. His cheekbones were high and prominent, making his face appear all the more gaunt and skeletal.

His hands were especially striking—the skin was dull, dry, and thin. They looked like withered branches, a heart-wrenching sight.

’Thankfully, it’s not a terminal illness. His body’s foundation is just completely depleted from his injuries and excessive blood loss.’

’He can make a full recovery with proper care. Judging by the Gu Family’s state, they probably couldn’t afford good medicinal herbs.’

’The herbs from my era are all artificially cultivated, with less than half the potency. The same prescription just doesn’t have the desired effect when you use modern herbs.’

’I found a lot of pure, wild-grown herbs on the black market, and I’ve already planted them in the black soil of my space.’

’Using these should yield twice the results with half the effort. I’m confident I can cure Eldest Brother Gu. Normally, a doctor shouldn’t make such absolute promises.’

’But given the Gu Family’s situation, it’s better to give them some peace of mind.’

"Eldest Brother’s life isn’t in danger. It’s just a combination of chronic malnutrition that has depleted his body, on top of his injuries and excessive blood loss. He’s unconscious mainly due to severe emotional distress."

"Jiao... Jiaojiao... can your brother really be saved?" A hint of color returned to Mr. Gu’s deathly pale face.

He was probably just overwhelmed with emotion.

"He won’t just live. With proper care, he could live to be a hundred," Gu Jiaojiao said teasingly.

Su Shuochi was afraid his wife would get carried away and pull something out of thin air, since she always did that in front of him.

With a knowing glance, he brought his backpack around to the front and offered it to Gu Jiaojiao. "Jiaojiao, take whatever you need."

Gu Jiaojiao shot him a look, then took a set of silver needles from her space, pretending to pull them from the backpack.

Su Shuochi wheeled himself forward to help his brother-in-law undress. The couple worked together seamlessly.

With a few swift motions, Gu Jiaojiao inserted several needles. Then, she took a high-grade nutrient solution and some anti-inflammatory medicine from her space to start an IV drip for Eldest Brother Gu.

’If Eldest Brother Gu doesn’t get this nutrient solution, he’s really going to die. No wonder Mr. Gu was so agitated.’

Gu Jiaojiao then deftly set up an IV for Old Sir Gu as well; the elderly needed the nutrients even more.

She also hooked up a few IV bags for Mrs. Gu. They were all weak from malnutrition.

’Western medicine for fast results, Chinese medicine for long-term conditioning. A combination of both is the perfect solution.’

While Gu Jiaojiao was busy, Eldest Brother Gu’s eyelashes fluttered, and then his fingers twitched.

In truth, he had been conscious the entire time. His powerful will to live had kept him from slipping into a deep coma.

He had heard everything his adoptive sister and Doctor Sun said at the Dong Family residence. He knew his days were numbered.

He was hanging on by a thread, just wanting to see his biological sister. He was also aware of everything that had happened since they arrived at the Su family’s home.

His own sister’s words, spoken with such certainty, had filled him with confidence, but he still couldn’t open his eyes.

A while after the needles were inserted and the nutrient solution began to flow into him, he finally managed to struggle his eyes open.

The long-absent sunlight was blinding, and he reflexively shut his eyes against it before slowly trying to open them again.

"Hua Zai... he’s awake... Jiaojiao... Your brother’s awake~!" Mr. Gu shouted, waving his arms and legs in excitement.

"Dad, I told you Grandpa and Eldest Brother would be fine. They’re just malnourished. My mother-in-law is going to make some chicken soup for you all later. You’ll feel much more energetic after you have some."

"You’re awake, brother-in-law. Let me get you a glass of warm water," Su Shuochi said, starting to turn his wheelchair to go get it.

"Sister... I’ll go."

Gu Jingtai had been stunned with happiness seeing his older brother awake. Hearing Su Shuochi’s offer, he jolted to his senses and shot up to get the water.
