Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 13: Nina Thorne, Do You Regret Getting Married?
Justin Kane’s deep eyes rested on her confused face.
After a moment, he parted his thin lips. "They’re a pair..."
The rest of his words were swallowed by the sudden ring of a cell phone.
Nina Thorne didn’t hear him.
Outside the window, the city lights were coming on.
"I need to take this. You get some rest." A strange light flickered in the depths of Justin Kane’s eyes, but his voice remained gentle.
Nina Thorne hummed in agreement.
Justin Kane stepped into the hallway, away from the room, and answered the call. "Speak."
The warmth on his face vanished completely, replaced by an icy, severe expression.
Assistant Cheney sounded furious. "Mr. Kane, I pulled the restaurant’s security footage. After what Zane Jarvis did to Mrs. Kane, a broken leg is letting him off easy."
Justin Kane took the phone from his ear and played the video. His cold face instantly darkened like a sky before a storm.
"If the Jarvis Family won’t discipline their son, I’ll do it for them."
Justin Kane ended the call, slipped the phone back into his pocket, and his gaze suddenly fell on the watch on his left wrist.
Its black face depicted a vast and brilliant starry sky—a matching pair to Nina Thorne’s.
The corners of Justin Kane’s mouth lifted into an unconscious smile, the icy chill in his eyes instantly replaced by gentle warmth.
’The gift he couldn’t give five years ago... after all this time, his wish had finally come true.’
Nina Thorne had Justin Kane watching over her all night.
She had a little something to eat and slept until morning, when a call from Macy Lynch woke her.
"Nina, I sent you so many messages! Why aren’t you answering me?"
"Are you mad because I sent you those videos? Because of that wedding gift I sent?"
The hospital room was so quiet that Macy Lynch’s voice sounded exceptionally clear over the phone.
Nina Thorne glanced at Justin Kane on the sofa. Her face flushed, and she quickly cleared her throat. "I just went to bed a little early last night. It’s not what you think."
Macy Lynch sighed in relief, completely unaware that Nina was in the hospital.
Macy was abroad, and Nina Thorne didn’t want to worry her, so she decided not to say anything.
Macy asked again with a mischievous laugh, "So, did you like the wedding gift I sent you?"
’A wedding gift?’
Nina Thorne remembered. When she’d gone back to her old place to pack, the building management had given her a package they’d accepted on her behalf. She’d brought it back to the villa, but it was still in a box, unopened.
She couldn’t tell the truth, so she let out a couple of awkward laughs. "I loved it. It was... nice."
Macy Lynch was surprised. "Well, look at you, Nina! Getting married has really opened you up."
Nina Thorne frowned, confused.
The two chatted a while longer before hanging up.
Nina Thorne opened her chat with Macy Lynch.
There were several videos in the chat history.
Macy Lynch: "Girl, I got the goods for you. Watch these. You’re welcome."
Nina Thorne then tapped on one of the videos. The screen loaded to show a man with ripped abs... it was an adult video, with sound...
Nina Thorne’s mind went blank. She frantically hit the power button to lock the screen.
But it was too late.
Justin Kane was already standing by her bed, his deep eyes fixed on her with an amused expression. "I never knew my wife had a hobby of watching... little videos."
He leaned down, his warm breath tickling her ear as he teased her deliberately. "If you want to... discuss them, you can just tell your husband."
Nina Thorne’s cheeks burned as she quickly pulled the blanket over her face.
"I didn’t..."
’I could just die!’ 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
’That damn Macy!’
Seeing her flustered state, Justin Kane couldn’t help but chuckle.
An important merger and acquisition case required Justin Kane’s personal attention at the company headquarters.
He arranged for a professional caregiver and a nurse to come and look after her.
"Wait for me to come back." Justin Kane’s face was gentle, his dark eyes filled with tenderness.
With him, Nina Thorne could clearly feel that she was cherished. A warmth spread through her heart, and she nodded obediently. "Okay."
Justin Kane’s tall, elegant figure left the hospital room.
Nina Thorne retracted her gaze and looked down at her watch, the corners of her mouth turning up into a smile.
’Her watch and his were so similar in design. They looked just like a pair.’
Unable to get out of bed, Nina Thorne, bored out of her mind, opened a popular short video app to watch the latest trending micro-dramas.
After watching for a while, she finally put her phone down.
Suddenly, an unwelcome visitor appeared by her bed.
"Nina Thorne." Cole Kane’s voice echoed in the room.
Nina Thorne’s body stiffened. She looked up to see Cole Kane’s gloomy face.
Nina Thorne glanced around. The caregiver and nurse were both gone, having left to get her some water and prepare her lunch.
"What are you doing here?" Nina Thorne’s voice was cold.
Cole Kane clenched his jaw, suppressing his anger. "I know Zane Jarvis was in the wrong yesterday for hurting you," he said in a low voice, "but you were the one who started it by bullying Serena. You were at fault first."
"You shouldn’t have run to my older brother and had him go after Zane Jarvis so relentlessly."
’Just like before.’
’No matter what, all Cole Kane ever did was blame her.’
’He never even asked, just found her guilty.’
Since that was the case, she didn’t need to waste words on him. "So, what are you here for? To read me the riot act?"
Nina Thorne’s expression was full of cold indifference, which made Cole Kane’s heart tremble.
For a moment, he felt as if he was about to lose her.
But he quickly dismissed the thought. ’Impossible. Nina Thorne has loved me to the bone for five years. There’s no way she could just stop loving me.’
Cole Kane said magnanimously, "You’re doing all this just because you’re mad I wouldn’t get our marriage license before. All you have to do is tell my brother to let Zane Jarvis off the hook, and you won’t have to apologize to Serena anymore. On your birthday next week, we’ll go get our marriage license."
「Outside the hospital room.」
Justin Kane was rushing back when he heard voices and came to a halt.
Nina Thorne discovered that when you’re truly speechless, you really do laugh.
"Cole Kane, what makes you think I’m doing all this because I want to marry you?"
"We were together for five years. I know how much you love me. It’s not strange for you to do all this."
With an air of taking it all for granted, Cole Kane reached for Nina Thorne’s hand, but she shook him off.
He froze, now more convinced than ever that she was just throwing a tantrum.
"Nina Thorne, stop making a scene. I was wrong, okay? Let’s just be together."
Cole Kane humbled himself to coax her. "On your birthday next week, we’ll go to the Civil Affairs Bureau, okay?"
Nina Thorne watched his self-righteous display with a calm expression.
’After all these years, she was realizing for the first time just how ordinary he was.’
’In every situation, she was always the one he ignored.’
’If it weren’t for him saving her ten years ago...’
’She probably wouldn’t have loved him so blindly, would she?’
An idea suddenly sparked in Nina Thorne’s mind—she wanted to give him a taste of being stood up. A smile bloomed on her red lips. "Okay. I’ll see you at the Civil Affairs Bureau at nine in the morning."
「Outside the door.」
Hearing this, the expression on Justin Kane’s face fell instantly, the light in his dark eyes dimming.
His thick brows furrowed deeply as he turned and strode away.
Seeing her give in, a flash of disgust crossed Cole Kane’s mind.
’Just as I thought.’
’She’s as manipulative as ever. She did all this just to force him to give in.’
Cole Kane felt a surge of resentment and said with a foul attitude, "Nina Thorne, you’re really something else. Don’t forget what you promised me."
Nina Thorne’s expression was indifferent, her eyes filled with a mocking smile. "Of course. I won’t forget a single thing."
Cole Kane didn’t notice any of this. He gave her a dark look, then turned and left.
A good while later, Justin Kane returned carrying a container of lunch. His dark suit accentuated his noble, elegant air, and the deep, defined lines of his features were strikingly handsome and severe.
’What a handsome face.’
"You’re done with work?" Nina Thorne sensed the heavy air around him, and a trace of unease flickered across her face.
’Doing the math, Cole Kane had only been gone for ten minutes.’
’Did Justin Kane see Cole Kane leaving when he got back?’
’Did he misunderstand something?’
She wanted to ask.
Justin Kane placed the lunch on the bedside table and spoke first. "Nina Thorne, do you regret getting married?"
Before Nina Thorne could answer,
Justin Kane added in a husky voice, "I know you did it on impulse. If you want a divorce, you can just tell me."
After he spoke, his dark, deep eyes were fixed on Nina Thorne. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and the hands at his sides involuntarily clenched into fists.
Nina Thorne frowned slightly, saying thoughtfully, "I regret..."
