Chapter 46: Pretending To Leave His Own House

Sawyer wanted to tell her the truth several times, yet he was unable to face the possible consequences.

Even though the number of times he met and talked to her was fewer than his fingers, he could sense her character; she was a woman who didn’t like to take advantage of others.

If she knew he was the homeowner, she might insist on paying the rent in full. And there is no way he could let that happen.

"It’s fine. I don’t mind climbing stairs. I’m just considering this as my light cardio," Abigail smiled, gently patting Sawyer’s arm before walking down the stairs ahead of him.

Sawyer’s jaw dropped as a thought crossed his mind. ’Oh, crap! I hope Brody didn’t move my car to the basement.’

He quickly took out his cell phone and typed a text message:

"Don’t move my car to the basement!" He hit send and inwardly prayed while catching up with Abigail on the stairs.

He tried to convince her to stop going downstairs. Still, Abigail insisted on seeing him off, believing letting him leave alone this late would be rude. Moreover, she expressed concern that the guard on duty might trouble him since it was already midnight.

Sawyer was at a loss for words. He was surprised this woman genuinely didn’t want him in the slightest inconvenience. If only she knew. No one could stop him from leaving or staying; the house is his. Plus, the house’s guards are among his most loyal people.

As they approached the door, he received a reply from Brody.

"No worries, Sir. Your car is in the same spot as you park."

A relieved sigh escaped Sawyer’s lips as he opened the metal door. However, just before they crossed the door, another text from Brody made him tense again.

"Sir, sorry to ask this, but does your question mean you want me to move your car somewhere other than the basement?"

Sawyer cursed the foolish Brody silently and sent back one word: "NO!"

He matched Abigail’s pace, glanced at her, and tried again to convince her to return upstairs.

"Alright, Abby. Seriously, you don’t have to wait for my car to leave; just go inside. You might catch a cold if you stay here too long in the night breeze," he said solemnly.

Abigail only glanced at him briefly as she continued to walk toward his car. Not long after leaving the house, she felt a night breeze brushing against her exposed skin, prompting her to tighten her light, long coat.

"See, you feel cold now, right?" he said worriedly.

"I’m not that weak, Sawyer," Abigail smiled at him. "I’m just worried that Brody and the other guard will cause you a problem and scold you for being out this late. I need to make sure you are safe..."

Sawyer was momentarily speechless, taken aback by her seriousness.

"Abby, no one can scold me in my own house..." Sawyer wanted to say, but the words remained at the tip of his tongue.

Sawyer had no choice but to pretend he was leaving his own house. He stopped by his car and turned to see her.

They stood so close, only two steps apart. In the dim yellow light of the night, Sawyer could see how exhausted she was. Not wanting her to wait too long, he hurriedly got into his car.

After starting the engine, he rolled down the window and smiled at her, urging her to return upstairs.

"I have to go now. See you on Saturday, Abby..." he said, waving.

Slowly, the vehicle began to move.

"Sawyer, call me when you get home. And please drive safely..." Abigail replied, waving her hand with a relieved smile. Yet, she couldn’t shake the worry of how late it was and if he might feel drowsy while driving.

Abigail stood there for a while, watching his car come to a stop at the guard post. Her mind was filled with worries.

"Gosh, why did I never ask where he lives? Does he live far from here? I should ask him about it when we meet later," she whispers. She wanted to know how far he drove.

If it were a long distance, she would never ask him to stay so late at her house again. Letting him drive home at this hour would be dangerous, right?

Sawyer was left speechless when he saw Abigail still standing in the same spot, watching his car as he headed toward the gate.

He couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. Abigail had forced him to leave his own house in the middle of the night. If only she was not there waving at him. He could ask the guard to drive it out of the house, and he secretly went to bed.

If his friends heard about this, they would surely make fun of him and probably create some memes to tease him.

’Damn, Sawyer! Congratulations on getting yourself into trouble, man,’ he thought wryly.

Sawyer hoped he wouldn’t have to pretend for long, and his fate somehow made her realize he liked her a lot. He also hoped Abigail could be his girlfriend without him having to do things he despised most, not being honest with her.

Before he rolled down his window to speak to Brody, Sawyer glanced in his rearview mirror to check on Abigail. He felt relieved when he saw that she was no longer standing there. However, he still worried that she hadn’t returned to her house.

"What’s going on, Sir? Why are you..." Brody asked, now standing by Sawyer’s car, confused and worried to see him driving out at this ungodly hour. "Let me drive for you, sir."

Sawyer sighed deeply; his miserable heart reflected from his eyes as he saw Brody.

He wanted to answer him honestly, but of course, he couldn’t, or this Brody would tell Ethan and Peters. If they knew, they might do something beyond his imagination, like endlessly persuading him to confess his feelings to Abigail.

"Can you open the gate for me? And please check if Miss Abigail has returned to her house." Sawyer calmly asked.

Although Brody was puzzled by his Boss’s request, he followed through. He immediately asked the other guards to open the gate and check whether Miss Abigail was still in the backyard.

After Sawyer’s car left the house, the guard returned shortly after.

"Bro, Miss Abigail has returned to her house. Why did you let our Boss leave the house alone in the middle of the night?" He asked anxiously.

Still lost in thought, Brody chuckled when he realized what had happened. Their Boss feared his identity would be exposed, so he pretended to leave the house.

’Boss, why not be honest with Miss Abigail? Why lie?’ Brody wondered, shaking his head slightly.

"Brother Brody? Are you alright?"

Brody looked at his partner with a faint smile and replied, "Me? I’m good. I’m not sure about our Boss, though. Let’s head back inside. Keep an eye on the road CCTV; Boss Sawyer might return at any moment." He instructed before heading to the basement.

"Yes, bro!"

When Brody arrived in his underground restroom, a text from Sawyer appeared: "Has she returned to her house yet?"

"Yes, sir. You can come back home now if you want..." After sending the text, Brody couldn’t help but laugh. He needed to share this entertaining moment with Ethan and Peters.
