Chapter 183: New friend? (3)
"I hope that is the end of us being approached today. We must also hope that no harm comes to her or we will have the town guards at our gates. What are the chances she gives up completely on trying to use me to upset the queen?" Selene wondered though she knew the chance was low.
"I think she has other ways to get under Vivienne’s skin. Don’t worry about it," Xavier said, going back to look at the coats.
Selene handled sending Natalie away quite well. Was it wrong he wanted to see how Selene would snap if others kept poking at her with childish plans?
"What do you mean? Do you know something about her?" Selene asked, now curious about Natalie.
"It is only an assumption I will tell you about when we get back in the carriage. If I am right, she will find her way back to the palace but not for long," Xavier replied, certain there was a good chance Natalie would die if not careful.
Xavier didn’t know who Darius’s lovers were but something about Natalie made Xavier feel like he could sense Darius here. The only explanation was that Natalie had a baby growing inside of her. It would be hard for Natalie to hide she shared a child with the king if she did sleep with him.
It would be the same for Selene as it was for Xavier’s mother.
There wasn’t a proper explanation for it but anyone in the five families could tell which meant Natalie was lucky Vivienne banned her from the palace before it was noticed.
If Natalie was pregnant, Xavier wondered if she was aware of the amount of blood she needed to get her hands on.
"Pick out how many coats you want and then we will move on to getting you proper shoes for winter," Xavier said, giving his attention back to Selene.
"Winter is weeks away and like I said before, I have always been able to handle the cold. It is the sun’s warmth that I sometimes have trouble with if I don’t drink enough blood," Selene said, not wanting Xavier to waste money on coats she wouldn’t need.
"Then, we should get a parasol made in every colour to match your dresses. You might not need them but I have money and I am interested in spoiling my wife so allow me to," Xavier requested.
There wasn’t much in the town to make Selene happy so the least she could enjoy was her husband showering her with gifts.
"Very well," Selene said, deciding to enjoy the moment rather than be against it. "I sometimes forget money isn’t a concern to you."
"How can you forget you are married to a Lord?" Xavier asked.
Selene laughed. "I have seen many with titles put on an act that they are still wealthy when they are drowning in debt. It can happen to a vampire. Also, before I married you money was something I paid close attention to."
"I am well prepared for the future," Xavier said since he had to ensure he had riches to last a lifetime with Selene. "Go be fitted for the ones you have and we’ll have them sent to the estate. Do not worry about the cost."
Selene went ahead to get what she wanted, leaving Xavier behind with Lucas.
"Pay close attention to the woman who just came in here. She’s going to cause a lot of trouble in the palace. I don’t need anyone claiming she is working together with my wife. Next time you see her, keep her away from Selene but be gentle," Xavier ordered Lucas.
"Gentle?" Lucas repeated, confused.
"We have rules for certain people we will not harm, Lucas. Besides, her fight is with the queen," Xavier replied.
Xavier hoped that Vivienne learning about Natalie would keep her attention off of Selene for a while.
"I understand," Lucas said, catching on to what Xavier meant. "Then she could be carrying the future of the kingdom."
Xavier shook his head. "She isn’t. She’s not going to live that long going up against Vivienne’s family but it will be messy if Darius thinks his heir is here. No one from our side should go to the palace now unless it is to end things."
"I will tell the others. It appears we are being watched by a human," Lucas said, looking in the direction he saw the stalker. "I saw that face before when the lady came to the market. He is dressed like a priest."
This sparked Xavier’s interest since he was certain the church was behind the attacks.
"Remember his face well and have someone follow him. He might be the first clue to figuring out the attacks. We’ll go to another shop after this one and circle to enter the carriage. The recent attacks haven’t been getting the court’s attention so it must be time they want to target purebloods," Xavier said, a bad feeling coming over him.
Xavier had to make the day even more wonderful for Selene since it might be best if she stayed out of the market for a while. Attacking one of them would start to send a message to the court.
"I will have someone keep watch on the church and the priest. He might have been following the lady or you before," Lucas said, watching as the stranger hurried off to be out of sight.
"Pass this on to Isaac as well. No, send for him to come to the estate tomorrow morning. He’s at odds with the king and court. I can’t have him locked away in the palace dungeon or go missing. Guard the door. I have to see my wife," Xavier said, walking off to find where Selene was being fitted for her coats.
Inside a small room, Selene looked to her right when she heard the women all gasp.
Selene smiled as she found it funny he had only walked into the room yet he frightened the women around her. Some had looks as though they were infatuated with Xavier but Selene didn’t mind it. There was no denying that her husband was a very handsome man.
"It is fine," Selene assured the women. "He will only sit and give his opinion. Since my husband is so eager to spend money, I would like to have something that will match all the coats."
Selene waited to see if Xavier would protest but he sat waiting as though he wanted to see what else they could present for her.
Now that she thought of the money spent, Selene wondered how Xavier was growing his wealth. She knew he had to inherit many riches but still, what was he doing to make it last a long time?
Selene had witnessed vampires lose their fortunes. Luckily, they had a long life to build it back up and most did it by conning humans.
"Do I look more handsome than usual now?" Xavier asked, seeking an answer behind Selene’s stare. He anticipated her blushing and looking away but instead, he was surprised.
"You do," Selene replied. "That is why it is hard for them to focus."
"Then, they shouldn’t look," Xavier answered, focused on only Selene. "I only want one woman standing in this room to look at me and she does everything she can to avoid my eyes."
"Please move quicker so I can free all of us," Selene informed the women. The sooner she got out of the room, the better it was for everyone.
