Chapter 184: New friend? (4)

After getting all that she needed Selene moved on with Xavier to the next shop but was stopped again.

"Lady and Lord Blackthorn," Paige greeted the pair. "I thought of turning around to get far away from you two but there’s no point in running."

"You haven’t done anything to avoid us, Paige. I am not upset with you since you weren’t aware about the home. Not many people were aware since my aunt did a good job hiding how she got it in Trevor’s hands," Selene said, her feelings about Paige remaining the same.

"Good. I thought after seeing the inside you would add me to the list of those you hated since I had a hand in changing up the home a bit after I married Trevor. That is about to end," Paige said, referring to her marriage. "My father is making sure it happens soon so your cousin is doing all he can to get back on my father’s good side."

"He won’t," Paige said, knowing Trevor’s fate was set. He was out of her life for good. "I don’t want anything to do with him and if he continues to seek me out, he will not be alive for long. I am upset but it doesn’t compare to how angry my father is."

Paige was certain that with a couple more visits from Trevor, her father would snap and put Trevor in a grave while he was still alive.

"During the very short conversations I had with Trevor, he made promises of getting the home back in his hands so you should keep an eye on him I don’t know why that fool thinks I want to fight over a home that he stole. I would have respected him a little had he pooled money together to get his own," said Paige.

Still, Paige wouldn’t have tried to fix her marriage since she did not like to be embarrassed.

"Ruby has not shown up at my doors which is strange for her since I consider her to be the brains behind their plans. She is the one you need to look out for most and yes, I think there was someone she was seeing but before you reveal it to her husband, allow me," Paige requested.

Selene looked at Xavier, wondering if he had anything to do with Ruby not going to Paige or even to her. By now, Selene expected there would be trouble created by Trevor or Ruby. Trevor was busy trying to get Paige back so what was Ruby doing?

"Thank you for giving us a warning. Trevor might be desperate to hold onto you even when death stares him in the face so you must be careful. Will you be fine now that you are no longer together?" Selena asked.

Paige smiled. "It’s easy for me to hook another but I think for now, I will enjoy not being married. It’s a waste of time. For me," she added, not wanting the couple to doubt their marriage. "I tried it and it wasn’t for me. I want to have fun and leave when my partner becomes boring or listens to his mother too much."

"It is good to see you have it figured out," Selene replied.

Paige glanced at the women watching them talk. "I hope you will have your troubles sorted out as well. I don’t know much about the Harrisons’ personal matters but weeks ago your aunt and Trevor were panicking about something. They had arguments with the other Harrisons and then it calmed down like nothing ever happened."

Paige continued to say, "I wish I could tell you more but I didn’t think it was important for me to listen to them. I am sorry."

"It is fine. You don’t need to tell me about everything they did. If you feel like you owe me something, please don’t," Selene said.

"It is not what I am trying to make up for. Consider it an apology for when your cousin disappears in the future. I wonder," Paige said, staring right back at the women looking her way. "Has news of my separation reached their ears or are they looking at you? If only they would say something so I can eavesdrop."

"It might be me that they are watching. No one should have anything bad to say about you leaving Trevor. It was a good choice since he wasn’t honest with you," Selene said, not seeing how anyone could judge Paige.

"Well, you certainly are positive. This town likes having someone to talk about and for those who know me, my marriage ending seems to be entertaining. It will not get to me and considering I have a nice pretty dagger which is good at taking out eyes, they won’t be staring at me for long. Or you," Paige said, more than happy to act on Selene’s behalf as long as she got to stab someone.

"A few women gossiping about my marriage being over is not going to be the end of me. Life goes on and if they fail to realise it has, I can always get my father to help them realise. You two seem like you were having a good time so I won’t disturb you much longer," Paige said, ready to excuse herself.

"If you need someone to speak to and you see me around the town, I am open to speaking to you," Selene offered.

Paige was surprised to hear this. "You trust me?"

"No. You got married to Trevor who is a relative I hate a lot so I think there might be a little something wrong with you. Don’t worry, I’ve made a bad judgement when it came to my husband before. I know how the town can get celebrating when a marriage ends so, I can offer a shoulder," Selene explained her offer.

Selene didn’t think she and Paige would ever be friends since it would be a little odd but Selene didn’t mind being the shoulder she needed when everyone laughed during her first marriage ending.

"I will think about it. I have been relieved knowing I don’t have the Blackthorns as my enemy. Now, if you please excuse me. I have someone’s fangs to break," Paige said, walking off first to approach the nosey onlookers.

Selene watched Paige leave. "I still do not understand how they got together. The more I speak to her, the more I see they are opposite."

’The same can be said about you and that man," said Xavier.

Selene couldn’t disagree with Xavier. "I think the same can be said about us. We are not the same but it works. Perhaps that is what happened with them."

"It could not be the same since we are still happily married and enough about them. Focus on me since you were the one who said it would be all about us today," Xavier reminded Selene. "I am going to cut off the head of the next person who approaches us."

Selene held Xavier’s hand to lead him elsewhere. "Then we should move faster to leave before I must worry about you getting the guard’s attention."
