Chapter 202: Sticking together (1)
The next day, Josephine arrived at the estate looking forward to her time with Selene. She couldn’t remember the last day she had sat and held a proper conversation with Selene. She was in desperate need of a distraction from all the drama which she found herself in thanks to Nathaniel.
"Go away," Xavier said, attempting to close the front door.
Josephine placed her foot so the door wouldn’t close. "Xavier Blackthorn, you stop this right now. Don’t make me have to scream."
It was a small challenge between the two with one trying to close the door and the other trying to keep it open.
"I am not here to see you. I have come to see Selene. She already knew that I was coming so let me in. If she is sleeping, I will scream and wake her," Josephine threatened.
She had not come all this way just to return home.
Xavier let go of the door, allowing his mother to open it. "I know. I was only toying with you and buying her some time to get dressed. She is a little late."
Josephine glared at Xavier. "How could she be late when it is her home? I can wait for her. I would have liked it if you were away so you wouldn’t trouble us. I am not here to bother her. I must get to know Selene."
"You already know her. You have been around her family in the past. Not much has changed other than many pests bothering her," Xavier replied. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
"That was when she was younger. She has grown to be a woman now and she has faced many challenges so she would be different now. I didn’t know you had noticed how she was when she was younger. Honestly, how long have the two of you been close?" Josephine wondered.
"It’s none of your concern, mother. Don’t ask Selene about it since according to her, we weren’t friends then. Selene baked a lot of pies because Morgana was here-"
’The princess? Why would she come here?" Josephine asked.
"Well, if someone wasn’t going around suggesting that I marry the princess and filling her head with nonsense, I wouldn’t need to be concerned about her coming here. The next time she comes and I am home, she will not walk out of here," said Xavier.
Josephine wanted to say that he couldn’t harm the princess but if it had been one of Nathaniel’s old lovers sneaking into her home, she would do the same.
"I will apologise on behalf of your father," said Josephine.
"We’ve been through this mother. Apologising in place of him means nothing to me. He will continue to do as he likes not caring about my opinion or how I would be affected. I don’t want his name mentioned to Selene," Xavier said, wanting to give her a break.
"I will not," Josephine promised. "I truly did come here to get to know her. Has she been around the town to meet with other women instead of spending all her days here?"
"She meets with a friend she made recently," Xavier answered.
Josephine touched Xavier’s arm and stopped walking so she could have a word with him before seeing Selene. "Truthfully, I heard about what Vivienne has done with the women warned to not meet with Selene. I have even heard the jokes that she should meet with the humans since she is so familiar with them."
Josephine was well prepared to have a word with Vivienne and these other ladies. Someone had to do it to give Selene a break.
"She’s only doing this because she’s still in love with you and when Darius realises it, it will bring even more trouble. I used to think Vivienne was so sweet. It was a grave mistake to let her marry that man," Josephine said, feeling a little sorry for Vivienne.
Josephine still believed Vivienne troubling Selene was wrong but she never liked Vivienne being with Darius. Not after all the things she had heard about the king.
"He’s not very different from his father. I have heard that he has taken a liking to Selene. It truly is like father like son because his father used to obsess over Selene’s mother which was why-"
"What?" Xavier questioned, hearing this for the first time. "Did his father like Selene’s mother?"
"Well," Josephine thought about the past. "I wouldn’t say he liked her. It wasn’t just him as well. You know her family has always been private so, I would say he was curious about her. That’s probably why Selene’s family never stayed long at events they were invited to or not attend."
"Don’t worry," Josephine said, noticing his troubled expression. "I’m sure Darius’s children will find someone else to obsess over and your children will stay away from the palace. That is if you have children."
"About Selene’s mother’s family, what do you know about them?" Xavier asked, wanting to focus on what his mother knew.
"What can I know about them? They were great during the war from what I heard but then they all packed up and headed far away from the palace. Far away from us. That’s why there is so much suspicion they took something with them or they are hiding something. Your father believes it has something to do with holy weapons," Josephine shared.
Josephine was curious why Xavier was suddenly interested in this. Has someone reached out to Selene?
"What about holy weapons?" Xavier asked, now realising what he needed to look into.
"How to make them. They helped with going after the humans who learned how to make them. We only found the weapons they used but not how they found out how to make them or where they were getting this holy water they said fell from the heavens. So, some say Selene’s family had the answers," Josephine shared what she knew.
It wouldn’t come as a surprise to Josephine if purebloods were hiding holy weapons to use on each other. They were always suspicious of each other and accusing each other of doing something.
"Why are you so interested in this now?" Josephine wondered. She didn’t want Xavier to get caught up in the past.
Xavier didn’t respond to his mother since he was caught up thinking of how the courts said Selene’s parents were going to kill the king. To successfully kill the king they would need a holy weapon but had they ever found a weapon on Selene’s parents?
Josephine noticed Selene coming down the stairs so she said, "We must stop speaking of this now. Selene!" She walked toward Selene with her arms wide open.
"I’m sorry to be late. I lost track of time. The maids are now setting up where we will sit," Selene said, greeting Josephine with a hug. She overheard what the two spoke of but decided to act like she didn’t.
"Now that I am here, I think it would do us some good to have some fresh air. How about I take you around the town with some guards of course," Josephine added before Xavier could worry. "We need a little girls’ day out. Let us leave the men behind and go."
Xavier didn’t like it. "It sounds like you want to kidnap my wife and go off somewhere far."
"Well, if she continues to be nicer than my son, I just might. I can take her to the far corner of the kingdom to get away from Blackthorn men. That would be a wonderful gift. Now, go on your way," Josephine shooed Xavier away. "It is our time to be alone."
