Chapter 211: Coming to his senses (3)

"I’m afraid I cannot help you with this. There was once a time when you suggested that I keep Selene as my wife and take Cassandra as my mistress. Now, you have this great interest in Selene," said Gabriel.

Gabriel didn’t like how obsessed Darius had become. He didn’t realise it was to this degree.

Darius laughed at Gabriel suddenly wanting to step up and act like this was wrong. "You have been in the palace long enough to know that I wanted her. I have made that clear the few times that we spoke. I gave you that advice when you were still married to her."

In Darius’s eyes, Gabriel didn’t have any place to tell him what to do concerning Selene.

"Be careful now, Gabriel. I am the man who makes the order if you will lead the town guards or if you become a servant in the palace. Will you let the woman you believed killed your mother get in the way of what you want? There’s no coming back after this," Darius warned Gabriel.

Gabriel didn’t like the options he was given. Not only did Darius speak of handing over Cassandra but now he also had to stay quiet concerning Selene.

Gabriel still hated Selene but it didn’t sit well with him what Gabriel wanted to do. There was a lot left for him to figure out concerning Selene like if her maid had truly attacked Cassandra or if Selene was behind the attack responsible for his mother’s death.

Before his return with Cassandra, Selene had taken care of his mother and his home. She had always been respectful and now that he calmed down, it made sense Selene’s attitude changed after their marriage was about to fail.

"Do you plan to make Selene your official mistress?" Gabriel asked.

He had to know that Darius wasn’t just going to use Selene and then cast her to the side. There were plenty of other women for Darius to do that to.

"Why? Do you think it would be hard to come to the palace while she is here? I have an easy solution for that," Darius said.

Darius would choose to have Selene in the palace and Gabriel far away from it any day.

"Luckily, you won’t have to see her since you’ll be leading the guards. I hope this won’t change anything between us. It shouldn’t since you are now married to someone else. Also, we should be honest with ourselves that if you finally came to your senses, you were never going to get her back," Darius said.

Unless Selene still loved Gabriel it would never be easy for Gabriel to take her away from Xavier. Not when Darius was struggling to get close to her.

"Xavier sends her around with guards so you will never get close to her. And you did the unthinkable by parading a human in front of a pureblood. Selene is seen as a traitor amongst our kind but did you know the others hate you as well?" Darius shared.

Gabriel couldn’t think of any reason why purebloods would hate him. He brought victory to their war so none of them had to go out to fight. "I didn’t-"

"Vampires are prideful creatures, Gabriel. You’re only half so you don’t fully get it. Regardless of what Selenen has done, you don’t get to flaunt a human in one of our faces. They laughed at her but they also think very little of you," Darius said, sharing something meant to be private.

Darius continued to say, "That is why I couldn’t find a good place for you in the palace but luckily for you, you’ll be going amongst the town guards where you should feel comfortable. No need to thank me."

Gabriel wanted to say it was his idea but he was stuck on the purebloods not liking him. He wasn’t aware of any of this. "I don’t understand. I have seen purebloods sneaking around with humans. They have slept with them."

"It happens," Darius agreed with Gabriel. "We just don’t flaunt it and even if we did, it’s different for us. Our status is different. Maybe you once thought it was the same for you because you had Selene by your side. She was the one who mattered then."

Darius tried not to laugh. Did Gabriel truly think he was special?

A mixed-blood thought he was special?

Gabriel being the hero lasted for a moment but when Selene was his wife, his name was worth a small conversation because a pureblood was at his side.

Darius noticed how sad Gabriel was becoming and had no time for it. "I am not good with comforting a man who I suggest you leave now. I will send notice to the town guards that starting tomorrow, you will take the lead."

Gabriel couldn’t leave when Darius gave him so much to think about. "What can I do to get them to like me again?"

Laughter soon filled the room. Darius started to see a reason to speak with Gabriel more often since he was a funny man. Why did Gabriel say again as though the purebloods had liked him before?

"Gabriel, the town likes you so let that be enough. As entertaining as it would be, I wouldn’t suggest you try to get them to like you. It would take you becoming a pureblood for that to happen or to marry one again. Still, you were just Selene’s husband then. Forget about it," Darius advised Gabriel.

Gabriel couldn’t just forget about it. It wasn’t that long ago he was in a ball surrounded by purebloods. Had they hated the sight of him then? Did they think he was nothing and laughed at him behind his back?

"You have these attacks to solve so I suggest you focus on that. Maybe if you solve the attacks, the others will come to like you. It is possible," Darius lied.

As long as Gabriel wanted to chase after status he could never get then Darius would always have a fool doing as he said.

Gabriel slowly nodded his head, agreeing with Darius. "I will do my best concerning those attacks. I’ve taken up too much of your time."

"Don’t be apologetic, Gabriel. You just showed me how funny you could be. We should talk more often and the next time we do, I want to hear more stories about your time with Seleen. When we do, fix how you react to my questions because if you make me feel you still want her, I might have to place you in the dungeon," said Darius. freewebnøvel.com

"Go," Darius shooed Gabriel away. "Go make yourself useful."
