Chapter 212: Eventful night (1)
"Is this enough for you? You have Harold circling for what you need. I have to inform you now that despite how close he is to you should Selene need anything then he will go running to her. You would have better luck sending for the head maid," Xavier suggested.
Josephine looked around the room which was decorated quickly for her to stay. "It is more than enough for me. I don’t mind losing Harold to Selene. She is a wonderful woman."
The more time Josephine spent with Selene the more she was reminded of how sweet Selene was as a child.
"Even though the world turned its back on Selene, she did not lose her kindness. I would not be so quick to say that kindness might ruin her since I saw first-hand that she knows when to put someone in their place. She did well at speaking up to say she didn’t need my help," said Josephine.
Josephine knew Selene started off trying to be respectful but then had enough of it.
Josephine continued to say, "I think if anyone pushes a little more she might snap. Part of me wants to see it happen to witness how far her anger would reach but the other part doesn’t want it to happen."
"I have many friends but I would never share with them what I shared with Selene. I know she doesn’t have any interest in seeing my world crumble or have a chance to laugh at me. She cares and that is something rare amongst us. She could use gossip about me to meet with others but she won’t. She wouldn’t win either way," Josephine said since she had more status.
"She is a good woman," Xavier agreed.
"Don’t mess this up. You will never hear the end of my voice if you do," said Josephine. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"You mean to tell me this was you being silent?"
Josephine approached Xavier and lightly tapped his hand. "This is me keeping out your way but if you lose her, I will be here and I will be loud. You have always claimed to be better than your father so be better to Selene. Don’t have her needing to stay with your child years later."
"The mere fact you think we would end up like you is another good reason why I should reconsider your place here. Don’t take what you feel about your marriage and fill Selene’s head with it. Our marriage is in a good place and I would hate to send you away to protect it."
"I would never do that. I am speaking as your mother since I want the best for you. What I speak about to Selene is different. There are certain lines I try not to cross but still, I think of her not having her mother at this time. How awful it must be," Josephine said.
Josephine couldn’t help thinking of showing more of a motherly side to Selene but then she worried about Selene not liking it. "How has she gotten by so long without anyone by her side?"
"She had maids she knew for years and Selene is far stronger than she looks. Thank you for spending time with her," Xavier said, appreciating the effort Josephine gave. "She wasn’t what you had in mind but you accepted her."
"Well, after you stopped showing interest in anyone I sent your way, I couldn’t be picky. I don’t know what to think about what her parents tried to do but there’s no denying that she is a wonderful woman. Your father and the others are out to ruin that," Josephine said, concerned about the future.
If there was anyone who could disturb what Xavier had here, it was Nathaniel.
"I won’t be able to tell you what your father is up to now but expect for someone to wake up. Your aunt and uncle being here means even more. What is that reckless woman doing showing her face?" Josephine asked, not looking forward to seeing Camilla.
"I know you have your differences because she didn’t like you were marrying my father but when it comes to what cost her fangs, she might be innocent."
Josephine didn’t like that Xavier was clearing Camilla’s name. "Have you spoken to her? Has she come here seeking sympathy?"
"She showed up once but then I went to her. Your issues with her don’t have anything to do with me. I don’t care to get involved in your issues but it isn’t fair to say she lost her mind and attacked humans. It wasn’t right for him to push for her to lose her fangs and I know you enjoyed it," said Xavier.
"Of course I did. She tried to make every moment of my time in the Blackthorns hell. It did not stop when I was pregnant with you. She might be innocent when it comes to those attacks but I will not forgive what else she has done. We are good not seeing each other," Josephine said, more than willing to tolerate Camilla if she wasn’t approached.
"Do as you wish. Since you are settled in, it is time I return to Selene’s side. You’ve taken up all of her time today. I will see you in the morning," Xavier bid goodbye.
"Wait!" Josephine grabbed his arm. "I know you don’t like it but since I cannot tell you what your father’s plans are anymore, I suggest you sit in those family meetings. Silence your father there by calling out his hypocrisy. This will not end if you avoid them."
"I already have an answer to dealing with them and it has nothing to do with sitting to address them. Don’t think about him tonight. Just rest," Xavier suggested, kissing Jospehine’s forehead so she could calm down.
"I’m your mother. It is quite hard for me to just forget everything. I hope one day you will understand why I act this way sometimes. Well, I hope your children will not face what you are facing now with Selene. Just go," Josephine let go of Xavier. "I will stay on this side and have a word with Harold."
"I hope it is only for help with the room and you will not seek comfort by-"
"Xavier!" Josephine gasped. "I am still a married woman and that is Harold. Harold of all men."
"I say this because it is Harold. You would make him uncomfortable since he is not interested in listening to a babbling married woman. Spare him from having to hear you ramble," Xavier better explained what he meant.
Josephine pushed Xavier toward the door. "Go bother Selene and leave me alone."
