Chapter 111: Please Come Inside

He coughed hard, puking out the water that had spread into his system.

Zayne turned on the ground, bucking to vomit more of the water he’d drunk without even knowing. His breathing was heavy, eyes burning.

Evelyn.

He thought. She was the last face he’d seen before he landed in that water. Was she okay? Did she manage to get away?

Fuck! Fuck!

Even after he’d tried so hard. He should have killed that idiot before going to save her. He should have made sure he was dead.

What if she hadn’t managed to escape? What if he took her again?

He quickly patted himself for his phone. It was still working. The screen turned on, however, when he tried to even do a thing, the battery went low, turning off.

"You’ve got to be kidding me." Zayne forced himself off the ground, wanting to leave, to find how to get to Evelyn.

Finding someone he could borrow a phone from could help too, but then he noticed...

Blood...

His abdomen. He was bleeding. He was still bleeding from when he fell into that water.

Oh, crap.

That last shot from Valerio had gotten to him. It was why he’d almost lost grasp of Evelyn and had to flip her up, resulting in him falling off instead.

He slowly lowered his gaze, staring at the wound.

How much blood had he lost? The fact that he’d given blood to his brother a few days ago, made it so much worse.

’Am I going to die here?’

His eyes flickered.

No way. There was no way he was going to die here. He needed to see Evelyn first, to look at her face and be more than sure that she was safe. Once he confirmed that, he’d be more than happy to die.

But not right now.

Slipping off his coat, he tore off his shirt, a good long piece of it, and proceeded to wrap it around his belly, at the wound to stop himself from losing any more blood than he’d already done.

Then he began to walk off, trying to find his way back. He was looking around for any signs of where he was.

Did the water drift him off?

The more he walked, the slower he got. He felt dizzy, unable to properly keep his eyes open. He may not be human, but he wasn’t an immortal either. Losing that much blood, there was no way he was surviving this, not unless he managed to get to a hospital as quickly as possible.

Zayne breathed hard. He ran his fingers through his hair and paused for a few moments when he found that he could no longer walk any further.

Before he could even figure out what to do, he dropped to his knees, falling with his hand clutching his chest.

He coughed out, spitting out a mouthful of blood. Zayne wanted to keep his eyes open, to keep himself walking, but he couldn’t. His entire body had given out and he could feel darkness closing in on him.

His vision had gone completely blurry and he couldn’t see anything anymore. He swallowed, tried to keep himself breathing more and more.

"Zayne!"

Was he hallucinating?

"Zayne!"

He could hear someone yelling his name, but no matter how hard he tried to see who it was, he found himself unable to see a thing.

A pair of hands landed heavily against his shoulders and he almost buckled, falling. "Zayne! Zayne! Zayne, look at me!"

The voice... the voice sounded familiar.

"Dario...?" he choked out. "Dario, is that—"

"Yes, yes it’s me! Can you see me? Look at me!" Dario fell on his knees in front of him, cupping his cheeks. "Zayne, look at me. Try to stay conscious. I’ll get you—"

"Evelyn..."

"What? What are you saying?"

"Evelyn." Zayne breathed out. "Is she okay? Did she make it out...? W-what happened?"

Dario shook his head at him. "There’s nothing to worry about, Zayne. She’s perfectly fine. Evelyn is okay. Alessio and Brandon took her. She’s okay, I promise you that."

Zayne nodded in relief. That was the only worry he’d have. And it was good to hear that she was okay. Taking one last deep breath, he gave out, plopping against Dario who was holding him.

Dario’s eyes flickered.

It couldn’t...It couldn’t be...right?

———

Both Brandon and Lincoln sat, eyes fixed on the floor.

"What was that...supposed to mean?" Brandon asked.

Lincoln couldn’t respond. Even he was confused.

The doctor had said that Evelyn was not completely human. But he couldn’t tell what exactly it was. Not to mention her heart rate which was far too fast for a human.

Was something wrong with Evelyn? Has something always been wrong with her? But that couldn’t be. If something was wrong, he or his brother would have known. They would have figured it out.

Then again, Evelyn had never once fallen sick. She’d never been taken to the hospital, so there was actually no way they would have known.

Lincoln stood up.

He began to pace back and forth in the hall. But abruptly, he stopped. He looked at Brandon. "I’ll be back. Give me a second."

Brandon cocked a brow at him. "What’s going on?"

Lincoln didn’t answer him. Instead, he walked off, heading for the doctor’s office. Arriving, he knocked at the door.

"Rita, I am busy. Pause any appointment that I may have for now. I—"

"It’s me, Lincoln," he said, cutting the man off.

A beat of silence passed in the room before the approaching sounds of footsteps resounded. The handle was grabbed, the door pulled open, and coming into his view was the doctor.

The man blinked. "Is...something wrong, Mr. Darkwood?"

"I have a favor to ask of you," Lincoln said.

"A...favor?" The doctor seemed confused.

Lincoln nodded. He took a deep breath. "Actually, this is a secret that people are unaware of. I want to have a blood test, and since you’ll find out the truth anyway if I go ahead with the test, I might as well let you know so as not to leave you in shock."

The doctor blinked at him.

"Oh...okay." He swallowed, stepping aside. "Please, come inside."
