Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!-Chapter 123: The Truth
It’s been about a week now. Evelyn had managed to stabilize things properly at the company. Zayne’s help has been great too. Preston and Lyra had tried to act and pressure her, but they had been suppressed and for now, they weren’t making any sort of moves.
Everything was finally calm and okay, it felt surreal.
The company was back on track. Her projects were going well. She had also sorted things out with Amber.
If there was one thing that was out of place, it had to be... her uncle Lincoln. She wasn’t sure what it was, but the man had been behaving weirdly. Throughout the time she was in the hospital, she knew he was there and that, along with Brandon, he had cared for her.
She wondered why.
Yes, Brandon had had a complicated attitude with her back then, she knew that, and wasn’t shocked by his switch and unwillingness to aid Preston and Lyra. But Lincoln?
Though the man hadn’t been openly mean to her like those two, he had never stood up for her or even stopped their acts when he saw them. If anything, he let it continue. Why was he being so kind to her now?
The worst part of it all was the look he often gave her when he saw her. She couldn’t describe it, but they were often filled with a kind of sadness that almost had her inquiring about.
But she wouldn’t.
She had nothing to do with him anyway. He was merely her uncle, nothing more.
Shaking the thought off, Evelyn closed the stapled documents she had signed and put them in a booklet. Then she stood up and left the office.
She headed down to the cafe where she ordered a cup of coffee for herself and proceeded to have a drink.
She was thinking of him. Valerio who had abducted her and almost killed her. Though she wasn’t afraid anymore, she couldn’t still forget any of it. He was already a dead man, but all those memories were still fresh in her head.
Sighing, she was about to get up and leave, but there came Brandon who settled down at the table opposite her. He crossed his legs, asking, "How do you feel?"
"I’m okay..." she responded. They were on better terms now but it was still a bit stifled, not as smooth as could be expected. But that was fine. They hadn’t been close anyway. Sooner or later, they will get used to each other.
"Evelyn–"
"Thank you, Brandon," she said, interrupting him before he could say anything.
Brandon lifted a brow. "Thank you... for what?"
"For coming as well and aiding to save me. You might think it’s not much, but I am grateful. So thank you," she expressed, glancing over at him with a soft smile on her face.
It was a sincere smile and it made his heart shake. Even if their relationship wasn’t great, this was still something. She was starting to become much warmer to him.
And that made him make up his mind on the reason he’d come here. "Evelyn, there is a secret our entire family has been keeping from you. And since no one is going to tell you, I will tell you. I believe you deserve to know."
Evelyn looked at him, her brows furrowed. "What... do you mean?"
Brandon fidgeted with his hands. "I have asked Uncle Lincoln to tell you the truth himself, but he’s hesitating, unwilling to muster up the courage to tell you the truth. So here I am, to let you know."
"Let me know what?" She was starting to get really confused. "Brandon, what are you talking about? What secret? And what does it have to do with Uncle Lincoln?"
The man took a deep breath. "You are not my stepsister. Rather... you’re my cousin."
Evelyn slowly blinked, taking a few moments to process the information.
"What?" she asked.
"Sage is not your real father," he said. "If anything, he is... your uncle.."
Silence, as if a bump dropped between the two of them. She stared at him, and abruptly chuckled, looking at him as though he had gone mad. "I know you try to be funny or say nonsense to me sometimes, Brandon, but this is not funny. Do you think–"
"I am not joking with you. Uncle Lincoln is your father. Your biological father. Sage is your uncle, he just raised you, but he is not your real father."
"That makes no sense!" Evelyn slammed her hands on the table. "It makes no sense! It is impossible that Sage isn’t my real father. He raised me, okay? Every part of my life, he was the one who was there. My graduation, everything, he always came. So what if he wasn’t as warm as to me, but he still raised him and attended to every part of my life."
She yelled at him, "How are you going to sit there and tell me that he is not my biological father? Lincoln? I don’t even know him that much. He has never been much in my life, never even gave a crap about me, so how can you sit there and tell me that he’s my biological father?"
"But it’s the truth, Evelyn." Brandon tried to make her understand. "I know all this is sudden and that’s why you are unable to accept it. I truly understand. But I wouldn’t lie to you, not about something as serious as this. Uncle Lincoln is your real father, and there is a reason why Sage had to raise you as his own daughter and our siblings. There is a reason why Uncle was not able to be in your life as your real father. So please calm down. Hear me out. I can tell you everything, please."
He pleaded, "Remember we are still here in the company. We are the only ones in this cafe right now, but you mustn’t forget that anyone could hear. So calm down. Breathe and gather yourself. I beg you."
Evelyn stared at him. None of this made sense. Nothing was making sense to her anymore!
