Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!-Chapter 124: The Truth (2)
"You’re lying!" Evelyn exclaimed. "You are lying to me. That cannot be so. That is impossible!"
"Evelyn—" Brandon tried to calm her down.
But she cut him off. "Why would father raise me as his own? Why would he do that if I wasn’t his real daughter, huh?"
She was raising her voice, losing it.
Brandon looked around in panic. Even if the family knew the truth, the world didn’t have any business being aware of this fact. So he stood up, snatched her wrist, and began to drag her away.
"Let go of me!" Evelyn struggled. "Brandon, let go of me!"
But the man wouldn’t do so. He dragged her off until they arrived at her office where he shoved her inside and stepped in after, slamming the door shut. He locked it, and even though she was glaring at him with blazing eyes, he took a deep breath.
He ran his fingers through his hair, taking a few moments to calm down, before he looked at her. "You think I’m lying or you are just unwilling to accept the truth?"
"Stop lying!" She glared at him.
"How am I lying?" he questioned. "Have you never wondered why Preston and Lyra treated you like that? If you were truly our sister, do you think they would ever be so mean to you? Do you think they would have ostracized you?"
"No."
He shook his head at her.
"This is exactly why you were ostracized. You were not Sage Darkwood’s biological daughter. Everyone knew! Everyone except you."
Evelyn stared at him.
She wouldn’t believe it.
She could not bring herself to believe it.
How could that be? She was her mother’s daughter and her mother was married to Sage Darkwood. How could Uncle Lincoln be her biological father?
None of it made sense at all. She didn’t know how to digest this information. And in the pit of her all those emotions and frustration, wetness built up in her eyes, threatening to burst apart.
She locked gazes with him. "How...? How could everyone know except me?"
Brandon answered straightforwardly. "Father didn’t want us to tell you. He made sure that we kept it a secret."
"Why?"
"That... I’m afraid I cannot answer you." The man shook his head. "None of us knows what our father was really thinking. We also couldn’t understand why he raised you despite knowing that you weren’t his biological daughter. Father was a complicated man. He was too hard to understand. The way he handled situations and even his complex actions. It was pointless trying to question his motive."
Evelyn was frustrated.
No, better yet, she was dejected.
How... could all this have happened all her life? How had she been in the dark all this while?
Her shoulder slumped her gaze dropping to the floor. "How... is Uncle Lincoln my father? My mother was married to my father, so... so, how?" Her voice was trembling. And so Brandon could tell she was sobbing. Even the floor was being dented by her dropping tears.
He wished to pull her into a hug at this moment and comfort her. But he didn’t. Instead, he proceeded to answer her question.
"Your mother and Uncle Lincoln had an affair. But it wasn’t your mother’s fault."
She quickly shot up her gaze toward Brandon. "What?"
Brandon sighed deeply. "Well, from what I know, Uncle Lincoln and your mother loved each other. That is before Father met her. He fell in love with her, and he wanted her. So, he started pursuing her. Uncle Lincoln didn’t like that. But he had a fate that your mother would stick with him. I’m not sure what happened, but things took a turn. Father was the winner. He found a way to make your mother be with him. But as time went on, because father treated her so well, I mean, he genuinely loved her, your mother began falling in love with him. She fully gave in to him, accepting this."
He met Evelyn’s eyes. "You can imagine how Uncle felt. He hated it. He was angry, mad. It turned out your mother loved father more than he even loved uncle. And uncle could not stand the sight of it. What was it that father did better that he couldn’t do for her? But there was nothing anyone could do. Father never had the intention of giving mother up. You could say that while he loved even the breath she took, he was also obsessed with her." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
Evelyn swallowed thickly. "W-what now happened?"
The man let out a deep breath. "Uncle happened."
He continued, "You see, uncle took advantage of your mother during her most vulnerable moment."
"What?"
"She was drunk... and you can guess what it was like. He knew it was wrong to indulge her while she wasn’t even herself, but he went ahead with it because he felt jealousy and anger towards father. But even still, according to what father said, your mother forgave him because she felt everything was her fault. She buried everything that happened, only to find out she was... pregnant with you."
Silence dropped between the two of them.
Evelyn swallowed. "No..."
Brandon slowly nodded at her. "Father didn’t make her get rid of you. He was willing to raise you as his own daughter. But he had conditions. Uncle Lincoln will have nothing to do with you. He will never be a father to you. Father had said that the role of a father when it came to you would solely belong to him. That was why during every achievement of your life, instead of uncle, father was the one present. He also conditioned Uncle to never tell you the truth, else he’d kill him. He said to uncle, that he had no place in your life and he didn’t deserve to be your father. And so, Uncle never got to be a father to you. He could only swallow the pain and watch by the side as you called another man your father. It was his punishment. And in my opinion..."
"...he deserved it." He shrugged. "Uncle, maybe not a bad person entirely, but he wasn’t that great of a man either. Yes, losing the woman you loved to another person, more so your own brother could be heart-wrenching. But it wasn’t enough reason to go as far as he did. So... there you have it..."
Evelyn was pale. Incredibly so.
