Chapter 241: The price of being responsible
What part of no penetration didn’t get through to you? Listen, it’s not about the actual act, but the pheromones that you emit when you do it. I don’t give a flying fuck who is fucking who, no means no.
His dreams, crushed once more.
Andrew didn’t think he was going to recover this time. He was close to tears as he laid his head against his desk, Michael’s text open on his phone. His phone vibrated again and he glanced over, noticed he had been texted by Maxwell and Michael both, and rolled back, wanting to cry.
He knew that Maxwell was going to be asking what Michael said. He’d been sending messages checking in with him to see what Michael said since he’d suggested that there was a loophole, pun intended.
Michael was the one who got back to him late, and now here he was, having to crush both of their dreams.
"Are you okay, Andy?" Richard’s voice held only concern for the other man. "I haven’t seen you pull that move in years." Richard told him and Andrew groaned.
"I am never going to recover. God, why do I have to be a good person?" Andrew complained, and Dr. Cox laughed.
"Well, you’d be a terrible scientist if you weren’t. Immoral, some would say." She teased, not knowing Andrew’s past. Richard nearly choked, knowing Andrew’s past, while Andrew remained as he was. Slumped over, the desk holding up his body from his forehead.
"That doesn’t comfort me right now, Dr. Cox." Andrew complained, whining. Richard chuckled.
"Awe, is the big baby complaining because he doesn’t get to spend time with his Maxy-Waxy?" Andrew groaned. It was horrible that Richard was teasing him without knowing the whole truth, and also for getting it so damn correct. He hit the nail on the head, and it pissed him off and made him sad at the same time.
I am upset. I’m inconsolable. Damn this changing body!" Andrew lifted his head up, and then slammed it against the desk.
"Whoa there! None of that! That brain is important!" Richard pushed his chair back, rushing around to prevent Andrew from slamming his head against the desk again. "Where did the calm, collected, rational Andrew go?" Richard asked, his tone harsh. Andrew felt his eyes water.
"He went away when all of this shit unlocked some undealt with trauma!" He whined. Richard froze, not expecting that answer. Dr. Cox and Dr. Piper laughed, while Richard stuttered.
"Uh, well-"
"And fuck my father!" Andrew complained. "I hate that man!" Andrew continued ranting for a few minutes, Richard holding his forehead so he wouldn’t slam it against the desk anymore. All that meant was that Richard got to feel it personally as Andrew cried, frustrated.
"Uh, I don’t think this is something you should be doing at work." Richard finally said and Andrew nodded. He knew that, he just couldn’t stop himself. He had reached a breaking point, and he just wanted to be able to have sex with his damn boyfriend in peace without the whole damn city knowing that they were doing it. Was that such a crazy thing?
He appreciated Jenny and Luis being there, but it was so weird to have them listen in on what Michael told them. Maxwell didn’t seem to be as embarrassed as Andrew was. Was that normal? Maxwell was-self declared-not that close with his family, so why the hell where they allowed into the room when Maxwell had told Michael that Andrew had knotted him and that the condom broke?
And when Michael told him that they couldn’t have sex, of any kind, the whole damn weekend?
Damn it. He was just so upset about this. He even took away Maxwell topping him this weekend. He was looking forward to it!
Andrew got up suddenly, Richard stumbling back a few steps and he moodily grabbed his glasses and pushed them on.
"I’m leaving. I need to go work out, or else I’m going to smother Maxwell with-" Andrew didn’t finish his sentence, and yanked his jacket off and pulled on his winter jacket. He grabbed his phone, quickly pulling up Maxwell’s number and calling it. He felt saying it over text could be heard in a voice he wasn’t meaning to, and he should know the news.
"O-kay. Uh, I guess you can go? It’s almost the end of the day anyways. Have an okay weekend?" Richard said slowly, carefully. Andrew wasn’t smiling, his face harsh and rough as everyone realised how much Andrew’s smile softened his expression.
"I won’t, but thank you for trying." Andrew told him, holding the phone up to his ear as he headed for the door. It was on the third ring when a slightly breathless Maxwell answered the phone.
"Well? Is it good or bad news?" Maxwell got straight to the point as Andrew yanked the door open.
"Bad. He said no." Andrew declared, moving quickly out of his office and towards the elevators. "I’m too worked up. I’m leaving work early, going to go to the gym. Work some of this out. I wanted to let you know where I was going over the phone so you understand I’m not leaving because I don’t want to be around you, I just shouldn’t when I’m feeling like this. I’ll get a cab or something, so you can-"
"No. I have some extra work that I can get done here, so you take the car. I’ll feel better if you do. You can just swing by and pick me up, or I can ask my Father for a car to come pick me up. No doubt Mom already told him what’s going on, so he’ll be understanding. Or he won’t even ask a question. I’ll meet you back at home when you’re done. Message me when you get there, and when you’re about to leave, alright? We can discuss our plans for the weekend over dinner. I’ll...behave myself." Maxwell promised. The elevator doors opened, and Andrew stepped instead.
"In the elevator now. One minute." Andrew said and they remained on the line, not speaking to each other until Andrew got to the lobby. Stepping out, Andrew spoke his mind. "Don’t wear anything that shows off your shoulders or neck. I’m not feeling particularly civil right now." Andrew warned and Maxwell made an audible swallow on the other side. It was clear that Andrew had made him flustered.
"Dr. Andrew Knox. You cannot say that to me right now. I am supposed to be behaving myself. You make me want to greet you at home in your clothes." Maxwell whispered and Andrew’s jaw tightened, along with the grip on his phone. People were avoiding him, glancing at him before they did a double take and stepped away.
He hated that.
"You do that, and you’re going to end up in bed." Andrew warned, meaning it. He wanted to say more, but it wasn’t a joke right now, especially after yesterday. Andrew’s sensitive ears picked up on the soft, trembling sound that Maxwell made and he growled at how hard he was. "Damn it. That blood sample better come back soon." Andrew’s voice was angry, frustrated and Maxwell sighed.
"I’ll message Michael, see what he’s found out. My guess is...uh, maybe you’re not quite yourself right now. The Andy I know, even angry, is a little softer." Andrew didn’t like hearing that as he stormed out of the main entrance and towards their car.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Andrew asked, his emotions on a damn rollercoaster right now.
"Baby, I’m not saying anything negative. I’m just thinking that maybe...your actual rut is approaching, instead of the little taster you had before. You know, since you knotted yesterday, your body is fully developed now. You’ve probably been fully developed for a little bit, but we haven’t had sex. You have....you have been a little more emotionally unstable recently. Like I was with my heat." Andrew paused, fully.
Just stood still as he let the words Maxwell had just spoken wash over him.
Oh. He hadn’t-that wasn’t even-
Some things made a lot more sense now.
"Fuck." Andrew exhaled. Maxwell’s chuckle was a little strained on the other end.
"It makes sense, doesn’t it?" Andrew nodded.
"And we can’t touch each other." Andrew said in return, sighing as he heard papers rustle on the other side of the phone.
"I think the blood sample will let us know a little more. If Michael isn’t already testing for that, I’ll ask him to. It’s okay that you’re feeling like this. Take your time, go work out, and maybe that’ll help us. If your rut does come, I think both of our doctor’s will be understanding. We might, uh, I just-"
"We just broke the condoms we’d been using this whole time, Max. You shouldn’t be around me if I’m in a rut. I want-" Andrew cut off, glancing around him as he stood in front of the company Maxwell owned, where everyone knew he was dating Maxwell, and he unlocked the car. He slid inside, locking the door behind him as he sat down. "I want to put a baby in you right now. It’s this aching need in me, and I just-I think that’s why I reacted the way that I did." Andrew murmured.
"Baby." Maxwell comforted. "That’s part of the heat and rut cycles. It’s to make you put babies in others. You helped me with mine, we’ll figure out a way to help you with yours." Maxwell promised and Andrew rested his head against the top of the steering wheel.
"I hate that I can’t hold you right now." Andrew whispered and Maxwell made a soft sound on the other side of the phone.
"Go work out that body for me, alright? Keep those pecs nice and big, and maybe we can get away with some other kinds of play, to get the edge off, alright?" Andrew nodded glumly, but appreciated the encouragement.
"Okay. I’ll see you at home." Andrew muttered and froze when it sounded like Maxwell kissed the phone.
"Stay safe. Let me know when you get there." He reminded before he hung up and Andrew sat in shock before his lips turned up slightly, and suddenly, he was in a great mood once more. His boyfriend was so cute.
