Chapter 261: There isn’t going to be a fight

By the time that the duo had made it back to their car, a driver was already nearby, the phone calls were starting to come in. Andrew and Maxwell giggled to themselves as they ordered the driver to get them the hell out of there, like they had robbed a house instead of paying for a bill. freёwebnoѵel.com

They ignored the calls, instead sending a few texts to the group chat to let everyone know that they were grateful for today, and that they could treat them next time. Andrew made sure to add a smiley face, since he knew Maxwell wasn’t the one who would do so.

Maxwell shook his head at his response, but didn’t say anything, his lips turned up in a smile.

The driver was happy to help, especially as they pieced together some of the information about what had happened, and Andrew was just glad that they were a beta, and seemed to be a rather good person. When they did get to the house, Michael was outside with a large, cardboard box on their stoop, a few of the security guards showing themselves to chat with him while Maxwell and Andrew were absent.

When Michael saw that they had arrived, he turned and looked relieved. Andrew paused. The security team had been just chatting with him, right? It wasn’t as if they were interrogating him because they weren’t here, right?

Andrew, who was feeling considerably better compared to only a few hours ago, was ready to jump to Michael’s defense until he opened the door of the car and was able to smell Michael.

Andrew was surprised by how quickly his mood soured.

Maxwell, who was watching Andrew like a hawk, noticed the change in him immediately. Andrew had previously had a rather concerned look on his face. It was full of worry for Michael, but as soon as Andrew opened the door, it shifted. His gaze brightened, and his nostrils flared. The worry shifted to something darker and Andrew slammed the door closed. He turned to Maxwell, a different kind of worry in his gaze.

"That isn’t a normal response, is it?" Andrew asked, and Maxwell blinked.

"What do you mean? What isn’t normal?" Maxwell asked. Andrew fidgeted in his seat, noticing how Michael’s expression had shifted. Michael, who had also been excited to see Andrew had seen the door open and close. He didn’t look upset. Instead, he had at first looked surprised before his expression settled into amusement and that only made Andrew feel worse.

"I mean, I had all of this concern for Michael, and now it’s shifted into something darker. I know he’s an alpha, and I also know he would never, ever go after you. Out of respect for me, and for you, but I just..." Andrew trailed off. "There is this nagging part inside of me that wants to protect you from all alphas. Like I’m worried that they could take you away from me." Andrew’s chest ached, and he raised his free hand to rub it. His other hand was wrapped in Maxwell’s smaller fingers, but he didn’t mind.

"Baby, that’s okay. It’s...well, I don’t know if it’s normal, but I know from an omega viewpoint that I had a similar reaction when it came to you and other omegas." Andrew jerked, looking towards Maxwell’s amused expression. "Even my own mated brother-in-law." Maxwell said with amusement and Andrew felt his face heat. "So, I think it’s fine as long as you don’t freak out on me the same way I freaked out on you, and you don’t fight Michael. He would be greatly hurt if you swung on him." Andrew knew what he meant.

Michael would be hurt both physically and emotionally if they got into a fight. Andrew also appreciated that Maxwell acknowledged that Maxwell had been a little...strange around his heat. Andrew also liked the comparison. It put some of the crazy feelings into perspective.

"You’re right. I think he works out though." Andrew muttered and Maxwell snorted.

"That’s what you’re worried about? He’s a delicate guy, Andy." Maxwell protested and it was Andrew’s turn to give Maxwell a slightly strange look. Andrew had never considered Michael a delicate guy, but maybe Maxwell saw him differently. Andrew had always seen him as a good friend, reliable, and someone who was going to go far in life.

Realising that had nothing to do with whether he was delicate or not, Andrew shrugged, before he took a moment to steel himself. Then, he opened the door again. Maxwell scooted out of the car behind him, since Andrew hadn’t let him sit even a seat away from him and Michael was smirking, his arms in his jacket pockets as he faced the duo.

"Finally coming out of the car? What were you two doing in there while a driver was sitting in the front?" Michael teased, and Andrew didn’t hesitate.

"We were discussing how hurt you’d be if we got into a fight." Andrew said and Michael blinked, before he burst into laughter.

"Like, me and you? Oh hell no. I know better then to fuck with you like that, Andy. I saw how you used to decimate those idiot alphas at parties back in university. I’m sure your right hook has only gotten better over time." Michael said with a knowing grin. Andrew felt his lips twitch, even as the scent of him filled his nose.

Andrew did have to take a moment to wonder why May, who was technically ’unmated’ hadn’t bothered him, but the waiter and Michael did. As did several of the security team. He shook himself and continued speaking.

"What? Not even worried about what it would say about you if you ran away from the fight?" Andrew asked, stepping closer and Michael chuckled, shaking his head.

"Not in the slightest. I’m a Doctor. My job is to fix people and help them feel more comfortable in their bodies, not to fight them. I save that for people who have more morals than I do." Michael said, stepping back so that Andrew and Maxwell could come to the door and open it up. "Do you want me to stay outside?" He offered and Andrew felt his shoulders relax.

As much as he was joking, he knew that Andrew was on thin ice. Andrew chuckled, shaking his head.

"No, but let Maxwell enter first, and stay away from him." Andrew said and Michael nodded.

"Not a problem man." Michael moved further away from the door, stepping onto the grass to give them some distance. Maxwell tried his best not to laugh, but a chuckle escaped. He moved towards the door, shaking his head before he unlocked the door, Andrew standing guard.

"You do a great job of pretending like you aren’t like the rest of them, but here you are, protecting me." Maxwell said, smiling, while Andrew felt all the blood drain from his face as the door opened.

Andrew remembered that was a huge part of their original argument, and while Maxwell entered the house, and moved in behind him.

"Is that...is that a bad thing?" Andrew asked, nervous, as Maxwell began to take off his shoes and his gloves, hat, scarf and jacket. Andrew took everything that was handed to him without complaint, hanging it up. He liked this behaviour, as if they were one in the same.

"Andrew, baby, if I had issues with it, I wouldn’t have humoured you the last few days, would I?" Maxwell said instead, and Andrew swallowed, shaking his head.

"No, you wouldn’t have, but-" Maxwell turned, pressing a finger against Andrew’s lips, his blue eyes bright.

"No, that’s enough. I’m not upset about it. Really. I just find it funny that everyone is just...accepting everything that’s going on, that’s all. I’m actually quite happy that everyone is being so understanding. I just think it’s funny that if it was anyone else..." Maxwell smirked, shaking his head before moving towards the living room. "Let Michael in now, Andy. We should go over a few things that happened today just to make sure we both make it to tomorrow morning." Maxwell said loudly as he made his way to the furthest point of the couch, folding himself into it with a little smile.

Andrew heard Michael shuffle behind him, and Andrew quickly got undressed of his outer clothes before moving into the house, allowing Michael to come in. Andrew took the cardboard box from him, surprised by the weight of it as Michael closed the door behind him, stopping the cold from coming in further.

"Thank you for your kindness, Maxwell. It was getting a little cold out there." Michael joked, and Andrew swallowed. He ran Michael’s scent through his nose, trying to tell himself that it was fine. It was just Michael.

That was, until he realised he was picking up another scent on him. Another true alpha. Andrew felt a sense of relief fill him as he realised that he wasn’t reacting to his friend, but to the unfamiliar scent on him.

Thank goodness.

His shoulders heaving with his sigh, he was glad that he was just being reactive to something unfamiliar then someone who he knew wouldn’t harm his partner, and was in fact making sure that Andrew didn’t harm him during his rut. Michael seemed to notice the change, and gave him a strange look.

"Everything alright, Andy?" He asked and Andrew nodded, giving him a small, relieved smile. Nothing like his normal one, but showed that he was not as tense as he had been before.

"I’m fine. Relieved, actually. I wasn’t reacting to your scent, but the scent of whoever you visited before us. Thank goodness." Andrew said carefully, and Michael froze.

"You can smell them on me? I wasn’t even in their house that long." Michael said, confused and also impressed. Maxwell chuckled.

"His senses seem heightened. He was able to hear me while I was in the closet and he was in the kitchen. There were people talking in the living room at the time too." Maxwell spoke up from his spot on the couch and both Michael and Andrew looked at him.

"Huh. That’s...alright. I’m for sure making a note of that. But first, the main topic at hand, and the whole reason I’m here." Michael said, putting his jacket on a hook once his shoes were off and taking the box from Andrew, moving towards the coffee table. Andrew watched him, feeling a bit uncomfortable with how close he was getting, but also trying to talk himself down from being over-reactive. It was just Michael. He would never do anything like what he was worried about.

Do not growl at him. You are not a beast.
