Chapter 57: Investigations

"Who?" Haruki asked lifting his hands to cover his nose.

"My father. He runs a . . . oh gosh! Why do you have to make me do this? He runs an organ trafficking ring in that hospital. Now, I am not the person you should kill. Let me go. Just like your grandfather wanted, I have never done anything illegal that could hurt the family."

"Setting someone up for an accident over race has to become legal because of you or else, you’ll pay for your crimes."

With the man’s confession, Haruki did not have any reason to remain in the room. He gestured to Kiyoshi to follow him and they both walked out of the room.

When Haruki returned to his office, he saw his granduncle and his son hurrying towards him. He had no intention of meeting them yet was still shocked by what he heard from Souta.

He did not bother to gesture to Kiyoshi to prevent them from coming forward before Kiyoshi approached them and stopped them. He went on to do other things at work after Kiyoshi sent them away from the office.

They had done much more than all the atrocities of his grandfather put together. He knew they once tried to start an organ trafficking ring less than two decades ago but his grandfather, without hesitation closed it up and warned his brother sternly making him sign a contract of what would happen if he ever got involved in such part of the underworld.

There was nothing the police detest more than an organ trafficking ring, it was the lowest of all lows in the underworld. It could lead them to completely eliminate without an arrest as an arrest would cause the media’s attention to be drawn to it both locally and internationally.

Most of the time, they were quick to make an arrest as soon as something of that sort began which is why his grandfather found out about their crimes early.

Killing someone else to save someone else’s life was wrong. It was a crime that should never be done in their family. When he was done with work for that day, he returned directly to the main house.

His granduncle and second son soon arrived too requesting to meet Haruki. After Haruki tried in vain to rest his body and mind, he invited them in.

They both sat across from him as one of his men served them tea. He moved his gaze to the man’s face shocked a bit that it was Shinya’s brother. He barely remembered the young man’s name.

He knew Ren did not kill him but having him serve tea to the chairman was something he found out of Ren’s character. He stopped the young man as he bowed to leave. "Where’s Ren?"

The young man was taken aback by Haruki’s question and his shoulders bent forward with him trembling slightly. "He . . . he went out for a bit, sir," he responded formally like a member of the family, his voice a bit lower and dripping with more fear and intimidation than respect.

"Okay. Leave." Haruki had nothing else to say to the young man as the best person to understand the situation from would be Ren himself.

"Yes sir," his voice rang low before he walked out of the room.

Hiding his thoughts, Haruki turned to his granduncle sitting before him showing no sign of fear or intimidation as though he had not sold his soul to the devil by doing the very thing he swore and signed that he would never do.

"Drink," Haruki gestured to the tea they were served casually before leaning back against the chair.

The two of them showed reluctance at first but they both reached for the cup and each took a small sip. His uncle placed his cup down and cleared his throat before turning to Haruki. He looked like he was about to speak but Haruki made the same gesture towards the cup and the man frowned.

As much as he did not want to, he had to reach for the cup and raise it to his lips for another sip but when he moved his gaze to Haruki intending to speak, Haruki, met his gaze very coldly without speaking or gesturing. freewēbnoveℓ.com

The man bowed his head and took another sip without being asked to until the cup was empty. His son beside him mirrored his actions until his cup was empty too.

"I . . ." his granduncle began as he leaned forward a bit tensed now different from the pure arrogance he showed when he first entered Haruki’s office.

"There is tea left," Haruki pointed at the table and they had to reach to get another cup of tea. His uncle as though in a hurry, gulped the content of the tea and when reached for another fill until there was no tea left.

"Can we talk now?" the man asked frustrated.

Haruki ignored the man and paged the butler for more tea. More tea was served almost immediately by Shinya’s brother and Haruki had them finish the tea. When his granduncle was done drinking tea this time, he did not say anything about wanting to speak.

His once squared shoulder dropped notably and his gaze remained down without even an attempt to look at Haruki. "What do you have to say?" Haruki finally asked them.

"We want to know where Souta is," his granduncle’s son replied hurriedly.

His father turned to him in shock and showed disappointment as he glared at him before turning to look at Haruki.

"We know Souta did wrong. That boy is so naughty. He is so old yet he behaves like a kid having the wrong hobbies and the wrong friend. He was filled with jealousy and caused someone to hurt bringing the wrong attention to the family, could you forgive him this time?"

Haruki looked at the father trying to save his son’s life. Well, that was what it looked like at first but on a second glance, they were trying to throw attention on Souta alone.

If Haruki had not heard everything from Souta, perhaps he would have been a bit sceptical but not sure after but he was made even more certain that his granduncle was behind Ethan’s disappearance.

"What do you think I should do to Souta then?" Haruki pretended to be oblivious as he asked.

"We can send him abroad. Send him to one of those poor countries. Send him far away. Maybe to one of the mines you own abroad."

The man’s words confirmed to Haruki that there was no way he was a kind father after the safety of his son. He simply wanted to hide his son away from Haruki’s interrogation.

"Souta killed someone. The body hasn’t been found. The police are already investigating and you think you can simply send him away?" Haruki asked seriously as though their opinion would be relevant to his decision concerning the issue.

"A mechanic working on the track is at fault. We could have him take the fall for it. That will make the police leave us alone," his granduncle suggested leaning forward as he turned towards Haruki although not meeting Haruki’s gaze.

"What would be his motive? Even if he takes the fall, where will he find the man’s body to give to the police? The police will smell foul play and will go for Souta as soon as they confirm the involvement of the track in the man’s disappearance.

"Have Souta take the fall for everything. He planned the accident so just have him take the fall for it all, he should never have committed such a crime anyway, it’s all his fault." The voice of Souta’s brother rang in the room clear and angry as though he could no longer stand his brother.

His father turned shocked by his son’s words and glared at him as he asked, "Why would you say that?"

"Souta is a fool anyway. He should pay, after all, he caused all these."

Haruki rubbed his eyes bored of the family drama they were displaying before his eyes. Why would they come to display all these actions to Haruki if they were desperate to keep Haruki’s attention on Souta and nothing else?

"Both of you seem to be stupid," Haruki began without hesitation. "Without a body, no one can take the fall for it."

"Yes, I think Souta would have the body. After all, he –," Haruki’s granduncle began.

A knock came from outside interrupting his words. Haruki invited the person in. Ren walked in and bowed deeply to Haruki before walking closer.

"Where were you?" Haruki asked casually as he met Ren’s gaze.

"We . . ." Ren began bowing his head in shame as though accepting all condemnation. He glanced at the old man in the room and his gaze was cold and freezing before he turned back to Haruki with a respectful demeanour. "We found the body of the missing guest."

"What?!" Haruki’s granduncle exclaimed at the words. As though there should never be a body available to be found to begin with.

"Where’s the body?" Haruki asked seriously.
