Chapter 70: Birthday 2

What does the doctor like? What does the doctor need? He had no idea. He knew nothing.

He leaned forward as he asked her, "What if you don’t know what they want or like?"

"Then buy any think you want the person to use or what you would love to see the person to use."

She seemed unwilling to keep talking as though having to answer the question made her uncomfortable. Noticing that, Haruki decided to let her go and invited Kiyoshi instead.

"What do you think Dr. Yamamoto lacks?" Haruki directly asked.

Kiyoshi wad caught off guard with that question but he took a few seconds to think of it seriously.

"I don’t think doctor Yamamoto lacks any material thing considering he heads a hospital that big with the support of our family," Kiyoshi replied seriously. fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

"I meant Hiroshi," Haruki had to correct him although he did not want Kiyoshi to know much details.

"I don’t think he lacks anything," Kiyoshi replied. He would have added something else but he pressed his lips together instead.

"What do you want to say?" Haruki asked curiously as none of the responses he got from the people he asked was getting him anywhere.

"I think he would want anything you give him regardless of how little it would be," Kiyoshi replied. He thought of the meaning behind of his words and he was forced to add, "after all, you are his boss."

Haruki nodded thoughtfully before ordering, "Buy him an expensive wrist watch and a car you think he will like." Haruki realized he had been trying hard to find a gift to please Hiroshi and he was tired of thinking and asking people. He decided to give it to someone else to handle to avoid going beyond his boundaries.

"What’s the budget?" Kiyoshi asked.

Haruki reached for his wallet and pulled out the card to his personal account and stretched it towards Kiyoshi. "No budget."

Kiyoshi knew Haruki meant the words he said but what if he really went beyond and bought an expensive old luxury car for Hiroshi. It might cost more than Haruki imagined he would spend he began wondering if it could empty the money in the account.

"I have enough money there, you don’t have to worry," Haruki read Kiyoshi’s thoughts and assured him. He was wealthy enough to buy the most expensive car on the planet with the money in the account and still have more than enough to buy some more.

He did not need his assistant worrying about spending his money. Although he was certain Kiyoshi wouldn’t go overboard or the man would not have been his assistant for so long.

"Okay. Do I just need to buy them right away or do I need to send their pictures to you before selecting one?" Kiyoshi asked.

Haruki pondered on those words. He imagined Kiyoshi buying something he wouldn’t want to see Hiroshi driving, send the pictures.

Kiyoshi left with Haruki’s card and Haruki called the manager of one of his hotel restaurants to give them specifications on a dinner party he wanted to have alone with Hiroshi.

He wanted to call the man first to wish him happy birthday but he struck out that thought just before he could dial Hiroshi’s number. He felt the doctor needed scolding after all, the man had not called him for days but had the guts to send him a short message.

Birthdays are to be celebrated so pushing the man’s offense until the way is over was what Haruki decided to do. Kiyoshi was active with him. He stopped at a luxury brand store for wrist watch first and send pictures of two wristwatch which Haruki felt were very perfect for Hiroshi.

One of the wristwatches was leather and the other chain but he totally imagined Hiroshi looking very good in both of them that he could not select one and give up on the other one.

He ended up ordered Kiyoshi to buy the two or them. With the result of the wrist watch purchase, he was very confident that Kiyoshi won’t disappoint him when buying the car.

Kiyoshi sent him the picture of a car when he finally got to the dealer. It was not very luxurious brand and did not cost as much as any of the car he drove but it was a foreign car and looked perfect for Hiroshi.

He looked at the car on the screen of his phone and considered the price of the car. It was cheaper than one of the wristwatches Kiyoshi got for Hiroshi.

He sighed. Despite how much he felt the car was too cheaper for the doctor, he liked the car for Hiroshi so he asked Kiyoshi to take other pictures for him.

When he saw other cars Kiyoshi selected from many brands and that brand, he still chose that car. He ended up ordering Kiyoshi to buy the first car.

He told Kiyoshi to take the car to his private parking spot in the underground parking lot in the hotel he intended to take Hiroshi.

He felt early with nothing major to do at work so he went to see Hiroshi a couple of hours before dinner.

"Happy birthday," Doctor Yamamoto said with a gentle pat on his son’s shoulder.

Hiroshi smiled and bowed slightly before he appreciated, "Thank you."

"I was so busy yesterday I forgot to plan something for you. How do you plan to spend the day?"

Hiroshi paused shocked by the sudden care and concern about what he would do on his birthday. This was the first time his father cared since he moved abroad to study.

"Hope you don’t plan to spend it all alone at your age? You need to up your game," his father said jokingly.

"I do have someone to spend the day with," he replied casually as though it was just as expected.

His father’s face brightened up immediately as he leaned closer and asked, "Do you mean my daughter-in-law?"

"No, a friend," he replied hurriedly although he wanted to so badly to complete the sentence about how sad he was that he could not spend it with his son-in-law instead.

He had sent Haruki a message and he responded with one word, okay. No birthday wishes, nothing as though the information or his words were as useless as non-existent.

He was hurt by the short response but what could he do about it? He read it and moved on with the work he had. It took him so much energy and willpower to send the message to Haruki.

He did not want to be a nuisance, he did not want to be put pressure on Haruki. He wanted to let Haruki remember on his own. Well, he wished because who was he that Haruki would be aware of his birthday without a reminder?

But the lack of birthday wishes was what made him hurt the most. At least, he deserved to be told happy birthday, right?

Using the word deserve, felt to far fetch, it felt as though he was giving himself more credit than he deserved but still, he wanted to believe that he deserved something as simple as the words, ’happy birthday’.

Strangers without hesitation would say these words to someone they knew nothing about simply because they knew it was the person’s birthday but Haruki considered him unworthy of it.

Okay was a response to his words right? It as an acknowledgement of the received information he gave Haruki, right? He wanted to see a bit of positivity in the word Haruki said. At least Haruki responded, right?

"What are you thinking about?" His father asked snapping his fingers before his eyes.

Haruki shook a bit due to the sudden noise and movement before his eyes. He met his father’s gaze wondering when the man got so close to him.

"Nothing," he responded hastily shocked that he had let his mind wander that far.

"If your mental health isn’t up to par, you need to see a psychologist," his father said as his brow furrowed worriedly.

"I know I need to but my mental health is good. I’m fine," Hiroshi corrected his father hastily.

"You don’t look like it," his father said meeting his gaze as Haruki tried avoiding it. "Look at me."

Hiroshi met his father’s gaze calmly as he said, "I said I’m fine. I don’t need any help."

He looked down at his wristwatch and pulled out his phone. "I need to call the person I’m meeting. It’s time for me to get off work," Hiroshi told his father before turning to leave.

Hiroshi felt his father’s words might have to be put into serious consideration as he was being distracted while talking to his father.

It had never happened while he was at work and he knew it would never happen considering how much he valued human life and could never afford a mistake in his field but if it happens too frequently in his daily life then he would have to find a way to control it.
