Chapter 71: Witness

One quick step after the other as though escaping something dangerous until he was at the entrance. He noticed a familiar figure walking from a car towards him. He recognised her immediately,, and he could not help but frown.

"I told you to tell me before you show up," he reminded her almost too coldly.

She smiled broadly regardless of the iciness of his tone. "I told you," she retorted, lifting her phone towards him.

"I did not get the chance to read that," he said, reaching for his own phone. He opened the message app to see that she had just sent a message to him. It was barely thirty minutes ago.

"I did what you told me to do," she reminded him with a slight pout as though she had been wronged.

"You know what you did is wrong," he tried to correct her, but her smile only brightened as she stared dazedly into his eyes. "Did you come to see Itsuki? I will get him for you." He turned to return, but she hurried and blocked his path.

"Happy birthday," she congratulated him, ignoring his words about Ituki. Without giving him the chance to respond, she hurried over to him and threw her hands over his shoulder, hugging him tightly.

He paused, frozen with her soft hands around him. He did not stop her, though,, considering she was showing care and being a friend.

"I had a feeling you would leave work early today," she began as she released him. "What do you think about letting me take you out before dinner?" She asked when she took a step away from him.

Hiroshi was impressed by her effort towards celebrating the day with him. He imagined what it would feel like if he got to enjoy such attention from Haruki himself.

A small smile lifted the corners of his lips. freewebnøvel.coɱ

She raised her head to meet his gaze, her eyes widened in a pleasant surprise to see him smile. "You have a dimple," she voiced her observation, her eyes shining, mesmerised.

Hiroshi’s smile disappeared as soon as he heard her words. Yet again, he had let his mind stray too far from the moment.

"Why are you smiling?" she asked, still amazed by how handsome he looked smiling.

Hiroshi felt a bit uncomfortable. He had a dimple that hardly showed simply because he gave a perfunctory smile, and it only showed when he smiled sincerely, which meant his thoughts had gone so deep he barely felt conscious of his environment.

She did not bother when she did not get a response from him, as her gaze moved from him to something behind her.

She reached to touch his arm when her gaze returned to him, and her smile brightened. "Why don’t you show me your office?" She abruptly asked.

Hiroshi’s brow furrowed deeply as her hand touched his shoulder. "I don’t understand."

She stepped closer to him and said, "I have not seen your office yet. I want to compare the comfort with mine." She laughed softly, but her smile did not reach her eyes as she glanced behind him.

Hiroshi glanced towards what she was looking at, but since he didn’t turn completely, he saw nothing; however, he could feel something was wrong, so he turned completely.

Haruki stood behind them, his dark eyes tranquil as he met Hiroshi’s gaze before turning unhurriedly and heading towards the door of the hospital.

Haruki had everything set in place, but was unwilling to invite the doctor over the phone, so he drove over to the hospital. There were still a couple of hours before dinner, but something kept pushing him forward to meet the man early, so he gave in; after all, it was the man’s birthday, so he deserved some concern.

He walked out of his car to the entrance of the hospital. He was without Kiyoshi or any of his other guards, although he knew they were watching him and his surroundings.

When he stepped into the building, he noticed something odd. A couple seemed to be hugging each other close to the escalator.

He intended to walk past, but noticed the man being hugged looked familiar. The broad shoulders and height were too familiar for him to look away. It was Hiroshi, he was very certain.

He paused on his track as soon as the realisation hit. The man whose body he had hugged tightly before was being held in the arms of a strange woman. There was something sour about witnessing that.

The woman’s arms were unrestrained as she pulled Hiroshi lower to her height until his shoulder was at her height. She looked over his shoulder, and he saw the face of the person he recognised immediately.

It was Miyoko. Hiroshi was hugging Miyoko so tightly, no, he was being hugged, but Hiroshi did nothing to stop her. He allowed himself to be pulled down to her height. They looked beautiful, they looked like a perfect couple hugging each other without care for what was happening around them.

In a conservative society like theirs, Hiroshi was being hugged openly, and he did not bother to stop it; he did not bother to pull the woman away.

Miyoko was the reason they had fought the last time. Hiroshi had apologised, but it didn’t change the fact that he was angry when he saw it. Watching them now, for a moment, the rage felt at first disappeared.

Everything went silent as he took one step after the other towards them. His mind was too blank, he wasn’t thinking. When he got closer, Hiroshi finally moved, but just before he pushed the woman away from his body, Miyoko met Haruki’s gaze.

She looked surprised and removed her hands from Hiroshi’s body. Haruki stopped once again. He realised that he was about to act impulsively.

He was not certain of what he would have done when he finally got to them, but he knew himself more than anyone, and that he would have done more harm than good by approaching them, and he would most likely have hurt the doctor badly.

With that warning signal on his mind, he knew he could not get closer to them, so he took a step backwards, but he did not leave; he could not leave. It was as though he was trying to persuade himself that Hiroshi had not lied to him that night in his masters bedroom.

Haruki was closer to them now. He could hear when the woman asked Hiroshi in a soft, soothing voice, "Why are you smiling?"

He did not hear what she said next as she seemed to have reduced the volume of her voice when she glanced at him.

The doctor smiled because he was being held in a woman’s hands. That man who seemed to have the most beautiful yet most expensive smile in the world had smiled simply because he was hugged by Miyoko.

What was so good about being hugged that made the man smile? Anger, rage . . . And more rage filled Haruki’s heart as he watched closely.

His mind did not go blank or quiet this time; rather, it was noisy. Almost too noisy, so many thoughts filled his mind, one thought a lot darker than the next.

What propelled the thoughts was the fact that he felt the doctor must have either thought Haruki was dumb enough to cheat on him or that the doctor felt was too smart to be caught cheating.

The two of them continued their quiet conversation. He was almost certain that the lady told Hiroshi she was behind them. She began trying to get Hiroshi to leave after Hiroshi glanced back.

It slowly began to feel comical to find himself a subject of such drama. This was something he never imagined he would be a part of, and it was all because of the doctor.

The doctor turned completely and met Haruki’s gaze. Haruki met the light brown eyes he loved to look into, thanks to their beauty, and he had no thought of admiration; rather, he wanted to see pain and fear in those eyes that looked too calm for the situation they were in.

Haruki wanted so badly to laugh at that moment, to laugh at his foolishness. It was all too funny as he met the doctor’s calm gaze. A feeling he had never felt before washed over him, and at that moment, he just wanted to leave before he either threw up or sent someone to the ER.

He turned and walked towards the door, holding back both urges until he got to his car. He opened the door of the car, but a hand blocked his path just before he could get in.

"It is not what you think," Hiroshi said, his voice shaky, and when Haruki raised his eyes to look into the man’s eyes, he saw fear. "She and I are just friends. Nothing is going on between us, and she hugged me simply because she wanted to wish me a happy birthday".

The more the doctor spoke, the more Haruki wanted to turn the fear in the man’s eyes into an inhumane mix of torment and fear until the man cried in pure anguish.
