Chapter 110: Ch 110: The Saintess’s meeting

"Shuu, story...!"

Caelis asked as he tugged at Shuu’s sleeves. His eyes were wide awake, his young body vibrating with too much energy. In contrast, Rin was almost asleep, but still pulled himself up at the promise of a story.

These two were truly too much for Shuu to handle, and he decided to get their request over with quickly.

"Fine. Which story do you want to hear?"

He asked, and Caelis stood up and walked toward the book section before pulling out a book.

"This one."

He handed Shuu the book he had brought, and Shuu opened it with a surprised look on his face.

"This book...? Aren’t these... prayers and such? I think you grabbed the wrong book, Caelis. Let me go grab a storybook..."

"No...! Story... this one..."

Caelis sounded adamant, so Shuu opened the book and began reading it to the kids.

"Fine, I will read it to you. But I must warn you that I am not a good reader."

He had only recently learned how to read and write. The elves had taught him because he had been bored and had nothing much to do, so he did know the basics.

But Shuu was not fluent by any means.

"Let’s see... once upon a time, there lived a goddess. But she was not the only deity to occupy the sky. There were another seven gods alongside her that made up the pact of light and held the balance of light. On the other hand, the council that handled the balance of darkness only had one leader—the demon king.

Both sides usually kept to themselves and did not interact... until one day, the goddess decided to create a treasure she loved. To nurture it, she decided to create a world for her treasure, only to lose it to the demon king.

The demon king, who wanted the treasure as well, fought the goddess for it, and as a result, the first war between darkness and light started. But the strain was too much for the world to bear.

As soon as the demon king took over the world, the treasure he had fought for cracked and disappeared. And his despair gave the goddess an opening to seal him away..."

Shuu finished the story with a surprised look on his face. He had not expected to be able to read it all. But the words used were simple and easy to read.

’This must have been written so that even kids could read it.’

Shuu felt a little accomplished that he had read it properly. He looked at the kids in front of him to see if they were tired or not, but Caelis had a strange expression on his face.

"Caelis, is everything alright...?"

He asked as he reached for Caelis, only for his son to grab his hand instead.

"Mama, I will protect you from the goddess and the demon king. They are both bad people who only look after their own interests. If you see one of them, then run as far away as you can, alright?"

Caelis asked in a clear voice. Shuu almost laughed at his words, taking them as a child’s plea, but he stopped.

His son was only one year old, but sometimes he acted like he was much older. And his eyes—they made him feel older as well.

At such times, Shuu often found himself speechless, unsure of what he should do.

"I..."

He seemed at a loss, and Caelis noticed. The child blinked and spoke again.

"The most dangerous person is father. He takes you away..."

Caelis spoke in a sulky voice and suddenly sounded like a child again. The breath Shuu had been holding finally flowed again, and he let out a sigh.

"Tsk, so you are the reason Shuu has been avoiding me all this time? I knew I should have handed you over to your nanny to raise and not listened to Shuu at all."

Emperor Kaiden entered the room with a frown on his face. His eyes looked at his son with mock irritation, and his son looked back at him.

"Shuu is mine...."

Caelis spoke firmly, but Kaiden simply wrapped his arms around Shuu and pulled him back.

"Hmm, but your father would like to disagree. See, I have Shuu in my arms, so he is mine... ouch..."

The emperor complained as he rubbed his stomach. He was not hurt, but he pretended to be so that Shuu would show him more sympathy.

"Ouch, it hurts, honey..."

"Please stop competing with a kid over me. We should get going now. The kids need their sleep."

Shuu told them, and he noticed Caelis’s eyes following his back all the way until the door closed behind him.

The breath he had been holding all this time suddenly escaped him, and Shuu’s body relaxed.

"Was the tea party hard to manage? You look exhausted."

Emperor Kaiden asked in a worried voice. He was likely the one who had not slept properly in days due to his work, and yet he was still worried about Shuu. That made Shuu feel better.

"I am fine. The tea party was fine as well. Princess Danielle handled it quite well. I am glad to have her by my side. I doubt I could have done it all myself."

Shuu told Kaiden with a smile on his face. He was sincere in his praise for Princess Danielle.

But the emperor seemed to have a different idea.

"Is that so...? But I am sure you could do well on your own too if you needed to. There are a lot of people to help you."

He told Shuu, but Shuu just shook his head.

"I would rather not bother with all of this and let Princess Danielle take charge of things. She knows what she’s doing and is comfortable handling it all. I don’t want to take that away from her."

Shuu told the emperor, and Kaiden sighed at his naive companion.

’Alright. If this is what you want, then I won’t interfere... for now.’
