Chapter 66

Rhydian didn’t move for a long moment, his forehead pressed against Seraphina’s hand as tears soaked into her skin. His chest heaved, trying to calm the panic still racing through him. He hadn’t realized how much the fear of losing her had consumed him until now—until that terrifying silence had stretched on with no sign of life.

Seraphina’s hand tightened in his grip, a soft squeeze, and Rhydian’s heart skipped. Her voice, weak but there, broke through his haze.

"You... you really were about to lose it, huh?"

Rhydian lifted his head to meet her eyes, his breath hitching again. He said hoarsely, his words raw and unsteady. "I thought I lost you."

She gave him a small, tired smile, her voice strained. "I’m still here, your majesty."

He wiped his face with the back of his hand, the tears still streaking down his face, but he didn’t care. She was alive. She was alive, and that was all that mattered.

Seraphina shifted slightly, wincing, and Rhydian quickly steadied her, afraid she might pass out again. "Stay still, you’re not yet stable."

"I’m fine," she said, her voice more firm now, though still weak. "Just... a little dizzy."

He kissed her hand again, his face pressing into the back of it. "I’m never going to let anything happen to you again," he promised softly, his hand still trembled from the fear that had previously consumed him.

"I didn’t ask for that kind of protection," she murmured, her eyes fluttering closed again. "But I’m not complaining."

Rhydian let out a shaky breath, trying to pull himself together. "I don’t care what you want," he said sternly, his hand brushing her hair back from her face. "No one touches you again."

Seraphina smirked weakly, but it was clear she was still too exhausted to argue. Her eyelids fluttered, and her breath evened out, as if sleep was pulling her under once more.

"Seraphina," Rhydian called softly, not willing to let her drift back to unconsciousness just yet. "Don’t you dare pass out on me again."

"I’m just... resting," she whispered, a hint of playfulness in her voice despite her condition. "You’re a lot to handle right now."

He smiled through his relief, his fingers tracing her skin with a gentleness that didn’t quite match the rawness in his chest. "I’m not letting you go to sleep just yet. I need to know you’re really okay."

"I’m fine I promise," she whispered, her voice softening as her exhaustion took over. "But next time, maybe don’t let me nearly die before you start saving me."

He shook his head, his heart still heavy with fear, but the relief flooding through him couldn’t be contained. "I don’t plan on letting anything come close to that again."

Her lips curled into a small, exhausted smile. "Good. Because I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon."

With her finally breathing evenly again, Rhydian heaved a sigh of relief. And then, his expression hardened. Who the hell had done this. Who in the world thought they could pull this off and go free without paying with their life?

"Do you know who did this? Is it still the dragon kingdom?" Rhydian asked coldly, and seraphina instantly sensed the rage behind his voice. Her eyes fluttered open again, meeting his gaze.

"I don’t think so," she answered, her voice still weak, but sharper now. "She mentioned something about how I had offended someone I wasn’t supposed to,"

"Offended someone....who could...." He started but quickly froze, his eyes turning blood cold, his mind racing. Karine? Was all this caused by her?Had she also staged the kiddnap all so she wouldn’t be suspected and he wouldn’t be around when everything will happen.

The realization hit him like a thunderclap. The thought of it made his skin crawl. Could she really be behind this? It made too much sense, fucking hell, if she was responsible....he wasn’t going to show mercy this time.

He clenched his fists, trying to force the anger back. He couldn’t confront her yet. Not without more evidence. Karine had always been unpredictable, slippery, and manipulative. A confrontation now would only lead to more chaos, and if she was behind this, he needed something to prove it.

He swallowed the rising fury and forced himself to focus on the present. Seraphina needed him. She was alive, still breathing, still here. He couldn’t let anything distract him from that. He would take action when he had everything lined up, when he knew for sure.

But for now, he had to be careful.

"Do you... want a bath?" he asked quietly, his expression softening. She was a mess, infact....they were both a mess.

"Can I sleep a little? I’m exhausted," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes still felt heavy, and the last thing she needed right now was any form of disturbance.

"Of course. But not here," he said. "I’ll take you back to my chambers."

"Your chambers?" she asked, surprised. She didn’t expect him to actually volunteer to take her to his private space.

"Yes," he said, his gaze soft as he stared like she was the only thing that mattered. "It’s the safest place for now, until I find the culprit... or don’t you want to?" His voice dropped, teasing, yet with an undertone of sincerity. "I won’t do anything, I promise. I’ll let you rest."

Seraphina’s cheeks heated up and her heart made a weird flutter for reasons she didn’t know why..."I want to." She replied quietly. Without hesitation, Rhydian scooped her into his arms and carried out out of the infirmary.

She just relaxed her head against his chest, her eyes shutting close, and she didn’t even realize when she fell asleep almost instantly. That’s how tired she was.

When Rhydian stepped out, Edward and everyone else were still waiting outside, their expression tensed and anxious.

"Your majesty?" The physician called, worried.

"She’s fine now." Rhydian just muttered quietly, brushing past them without looking back. As he made his way through the hall way, karine who was excited thinking she had Finally won was walking down the hallway too, she had been planning to come check up on them and give her condolences while fake crying profusely.

But she froze when she saw Rhydian, who also stopped in his tracks as soon as he saw her, his expression hardened instantly... his eyes turning cold. God help this girl because if he found out she was the one that actually planned on killing Seraphina, he was going to end her life the same way she had tried ending Seraphina’s.

Karine observed the woman in his arms, her expression blank. She couldn’t see her face so she couldn’t tell if she was still alive or dead.

"So, is she dead?" Karine asked flatly.
