Broken Bond: Claimed by My Ex-Husband's Alpha Billionaire Uncle-Chapter 131: A Home For The Abandoned (2)
The Nocturnal headquarters had a refugee building specifically used to shelter supernatural beings in need of help, even Charlotte could have taken refuge there if she had nowhere else to go when she was running from Julian.
But unfortunately, Julian would’ve been able to find her far too easily, so hiding in the refugee had never crossed Charlotte’s mind.
"This is where we’re currently keeping the children," said Nara Brown, a staff member from the Order, as she guided them toward the building behind the main hall.
Charlotte lifted her head and looked at the four-story building just a few meters ahead of her.
The walls were dominated by white, but the green vines curling down from the balcony railings brought a bit of life to the place.
"This building has fifty rooms," Nara explained with a gentle smile. "So housing seventeen children isn’t really a big deal. Besides ..."
Damon glanced at her when she didn’t finish her sentence. "Besides what?" he asked.
Nara took a deep breath and gave a bitter smile as she said, "Besides ... the children never cause any trouble."
It certainly sounded like paradise since nobody liked hearing children cry or dealing with the chaos they caused.
However, most parents knew that whenever their children became too quiet, something bad was usually happening to them.
In this case, it probably meant the kids here were too hurt, too broken, to even act like children anymore.
"What do they do all day?" Charlotte asked softly.
Nara walked ahead, leading them inside. "Right now, we’re focusing on helping their mental recovery. We’ve brought in psychiatrists to visit four times a week to check on them."
She sighed deeply before continuing. "But even getting them to say a single word is tough. The psychiatrists said it’s like talking to statues. They just don’t respond, not even when we try to get them to play or interact."
Nara went on to say they had filled the playroom with toys and even placed some in the kids’ bedrooms, trying to make the place feel warm and welcoming.
However, none of the children dared to touch the toys, as if they were afraid that something bad would happen if they did.
"What about their health?" Charlotte asked gently. "Is there anything wrong with them physically?" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
"Oh, that part is actually getting better." Nara’s expression brightened a little. "Their health has been improving a lot. It’s all thanks to Beta Louis. He’s been a huge help in researching the antidote for Nightshade."
After Julian injected Nightshade into Haven’s body, Louis had poured everything he had into creating an antidote.
He said he wanted to be prepared, just in case his daughter or even his wife were ever exposed to that cursed substance, he would already have the cure to save them.
Just like Damon, Louis didn’t play around when it came to protecting the people he loved, especially his wife and his daughter.
"That’s really good news," Charlotte said with a gentle smile. "I can’t wait to see them healthy and happy again."
Nara then led Charlotte and Damon into the building and up to the second floor.
This floor served as a shared space—part playground, part therapy room—where the psychiatrists came in regularly to help the children heal and monitor their progress.
"Here they are," Nara said, guiding them to a large play area behind a glass wall. "For now, a few of the children have started to gather the courage to touch the small toys and books we’ve provided. But when they first arrived, they were completely silent, like statues."
Charlotte leaned closer to the glass and placed her hand gently against it. As her eyes scanned each child one by one, a sharp pain gripped her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Just as Nara had said, a few of the children had started to interact with the toys or take books off the shelves, but instead of playing or reading, they simply placed the items on the floor and stared at them from a distance.
It was heartbreaking, really.
They looked like they were afraid to touch anything that didn’t belong to them, afraid they’d get in trouble just for being curious.
"Miss Nara," Charlotte said softly, "is it possible for us to meet them directly?"
Technically, the Elder had only granted them permission to observe from behind the glass, especially since it was their first visit and the children were still in a fragile condition.
But the moment Charlotte saw their tiny figures, something inside her ached. She just wanted to be closer, even if she couldn’t speak to them, even if they didn’t say a word.
Nara looked conflicted. "I don’t think that’s a good idea, Luna. The Elder specifically told me that you’re only allowed to watch from here."
But standing behind the glass made Charlotte feel like she was at a zoo, watching children as if they were caged animals. It didn’t feel right.
"I understand this wasn’t part of the arrangement," Charlotte said gently but firmly. "But I don’t intend to speak to them or get too close. I just want to sit in the same room. Maybe read a book nearby. I won’t go near them, unless they come to me first."
Nara bit her lower lip, clearly torn about what to do. "I ... I’ll need to ask for permission—"
"I’ll take full responsibility if anything goes wrong," Damon interruped. "Miss Nara, I’ve already spoken to the Elder about the possibility of adopting one or maybe more of the children. That’s why I believe it’s important they begin to feel comfortable around us now."
Nara turned to look at Damon, blinking in surprise.
She had only known that Damon would be sponsoring them and allowing them to join the Crimson Moon Pack. She hadn’t expected that he was actually considering bringing some of them into his own family.
"I didn’t know ...," she murmured.
"Now you do," Damon replied simply. "I promise we’ll be careful, but we need to see if we can really connect with them, not just through therapy or reports, but through presence."
Nara paused for a few more seconds before finally letting out a sigh and nodding. "Alright. I’ll notify the monitoring team. But just ten minutes and please stay near the bookshelf area. No touching, no sudden movements."
"Understood," Charlotte replied with a grateful nod.
